YouTube confirmed in August 2025 that it was experimenting with image enhancement on selected Shorts, processing some videos to reduce blur and noise and improve clarity. Creators objected that the changes were applied without clear notice or control and could make their videos look unnatural. YouTube described the technique as traditional machine learning, not generative AI; the available reporting does not independently document how the system worked.
What happened to some YouTube Shorts?
In August 2025, YouTube acknowledged an experiment that applied image enhancement to selected Shorts during processing. YouTube head of editorial and creator liaison Rene Ritchie told the BBC the experiment used “traditional machine learning technology to unblur, denoise and improve clarity” and compared it with processing performed by a modern smartphone when recording video. YouTube spokesperson Allison Toh gave The Atlantic a similar description, saying the selected Shorts received image enhancement to sharpen content.
The reports followed complaints from creators and viewers who noticed changes in uploaded videos. The BBC said complaints on social media dated back to at least June 2025. The Atlantic relayed descriptions including “extra punchy shadows,” “weirdly sharp edges,” and footage that looked smoothed or plastic-like. Those are reported impressions, not a technical assessment of every video.
The scope was limited to selected Shorts, according to YouTube. The reporting does not say how many videos were processed, how viewers were selected to see them, or whether everyone saw the same version.

Why creators objected to the changes
Some creators said the processing changed how their own work looked. Music creator Rick Beato told the BBC that his hair looked strange and that the video gave the impression he might be wearing makeup. Musician and creator Rhett Shull said over-sharpening misrepresented his work and voice online and could erode audience trust. These are their reactions, not evidence of a measured change in audience trust or a problem affecting all Shorts.
The dispute was not only about image quality. Creators questioned whether YouTube should change an uploaded video without telling its creator or offering control over the processing. The BBC reported that YouTube did not answer whether creators would be given a choice. Samuel Woolley, a University of Pittsburgh disinformation studies chair quoted by the BBC, contrasted the experiment with phone features people can choose to turn on or off, and raised concerns about company processing without producers’ consent.

Was YouTube using generative AI?
YouTube said no: its representatives characterized the enhancement as traditional machine learning rather than generative AI. The reporting reviewed does not include a technical specification, independent examination, or test of YouTube’s processing pipeline, so that remains the company’s description rather than an independently verified classification. The Atlantic also noted that “generative AI” does not have a strict technical definition.
“AI upscaling” and claims that a YouTube video “looks AI-generated” appeared in descriptions of the controversy. They capture how viewers perceived the changes; they do not establish that YouTube generated new image content or that the system was generative AI. Machine learning is also commonly discussed as part of the broader field of AI, so the wording can obscure the distinction YouTube was making.

How the creator disclosure policy fits—and what it does not answer
YouTube’s March 18, 2024 announcement describes disclosure rules for creators who use realistic altered or synthetic media that viewers could mistake for a real person, place, scene, or event. Its examples include replacing a real person’s face, synthesizing someone’s voice, altering footage of a real place, or creating a realistic depiction of a fictional major event.
The announcement says creators need not disclose certain production assistance or inconsequential changes, including color or lighting adjustments, some effects, and beauty filters. That policy concerns creators’ use of altered or synthetic media. It does not directly explain whether YouTube must disclose its own processing to creators, or whether creators should be able to opt out of platform-applied enhancement.

What remains unknown
The 2025 reports do not establish the experiment’s duration or geography, its selection criteria, the number of affected videos, or whether an opt-out was available. They also do not establish whether the experiment is still active as of October 4, 2026. The reports therefore support describing a limited experiment and the concerns it prompted—not claiming that YouTube alters every Short or that the same change appears to every viewer.
