Cisco eliminated Maria Martinez’s chief operating officer position in February 2024 as part of an executive leadership realignment, and her employment ended on May 15, 2024. Cisco’s filing says the company was aligning Operations and Customer Experience directly to the CEO; it does not say layoffs caused her departure.
What happened to Maria Martinez at Cisco?
Cisco informed Martinez on February 16, 2024, that her COO position had been eliminated. In its Q2 FY2024 Form 10-Q, the company described the change as part of executive leadership changes: Operations and Customer Experience would align directly to the CEO, eliminating the COO role.
Martinez remained employed during a transition period. A separation agreement attached to Cisco’s 2024 proxy materials lists May 15, 2024, as her employment termination date. The filing documents when the role was removed and her employment ended, rather than describing a resignation.
Did Cisco’s layoffs cause her departure?
The available company filing does not identify layoffs as the reason for eliminating Martinez’s position. It attributes the decision to the organizational realignment. Layoffs and Cisco’s pending Splunk acquisition formed part of the contemporaneous context reported by CRN, but that context does not establish that either caused her departure.

How does the 2026 Cisco workforce reduction relate?
It is a separate, later event. On May 13, 2026, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins announced a planned reduction of fewer than 4,000 jobs, which Cisco described as less than 5 percent of its total employee base. The announcement said most notifications would begin May 14 and continue globally in accordance with local laws and regulations. These were announced estimates, not a final count of completed job losses.
In the same 2026 announcement, Cisco described placement services and Cisco U course access for affected employees. Cisco said 75 percent of participants in its placement-services program had found their next role; that is a company-reported outcome, not an independent evaluation. Neither the announcement nor this later plan changes the stated 2024 reason for eliminating the COO role.

What Cisco’s later restructuring disclosures show
Cisco’s FY2026 Form 10-K reports $511 million in restructuring charges under its fiscal 2026 plan and estimates up to $1 billion in total pretax charges. The company expected substantial completion by the end of fiscal 2027 and said the plan supports investment in growth areas including silicon, optics, security and AI. The filing also reports approximately 82,400 employees as of July 25, 2026.
Those figures describe later workforce and restructuring disclosures. They should not be read as evidence that Cisco’s 2026 actions were connected to Martinez’s 2024 departure.
