If Chrome on your Android phone keeps opening betting pages, the browser may only be where the activity appears. A recently installed app, a website notification permission, a malicious ad, or a browser hijack can trigger unwanted tabs or redirects. The symptom alone does not show that Chrome or Google Search started the activity.

What might be triggering the gambling pages?

Google Chrome Help identifies persistent pop-ups or new tabs, redirects to unfamiliar pages or ads, unauthorized homepage or search-engine changes, and fake virus alerts as signs of unwanted software or malware. The pattern can help narrow down the cause, but it does not identify one universal culprit.

Possible trigger What to look for What may stop it Evidence to check
A recently installed app Chrome opens after using or installing an app, or the behavior continues across different sites. Google recommends testing by removing recent downloads one at a time and restarting normally after each removal. A repeatable connection to an app, or a Play Protect warning. A warning is not guaranteed.
A website notification permission A gambling link appears in a notification, or tapping a notification opens the site. Turn off notifications for the sending site in Chrome. If the behavior stops, that permission was involved. The sending site shown in the notification or its Chrome permission. Whether a notification explains other unsolicited tabs is not stated by Google Chrome Help.
A malicious or intrusive ad A redirect follows an ad, a suspicious update prompt, or a page that claims the phone has a virus. Close the page without tapping its prompt, and keep Chrome Safe Browsing enabled. A Chrome warning may identify unsafe content. Whether an ad is responsible can depend on what was open immediately before the redirect.
A browser hijack or other unwanted software The homepage or search engine changes without permission, or unfamiliar pages and ads recur. Use the Safe Mode app-removal process, then check notifications and Play Protect. Google describes these symptoms as possible signs of unwanted software or malware; the symptoms alone do not establish which app is responsible.

Menu wording and placement can vary with Android and Chrome versions. Google’s sources do not give a gambling-specific rate for these redirects, so general malware and notification figures should not be read as estimates of how often Android users encounter gambling pages.

How to stop unwanted gambling tabs and notifications

  1. Record the trigger before changing settings. Note the exact URL, whether the page appeared after tapping a notification, and which app was open immediately before Chrome appeared. This can help distinguish a site notification from an app-triggered redirect.
  2. Revoke the site’s notification permission. In Chrome, open the site, tap Page info > Permissions > Notifications, then turn Show notifications off. If Chrome’s labels differ, look for the site’s notification permission in the page information or permissions controls.
  3. Test recently downloaded apps in Safe Mode. Follow your phone maker’s instructions to reboot Android into Safe Mode; the exact method varies by device. Remove recent downloads one at a time, restart normally after each removal, and check whether the behavior stops. Google Chrome Help recommends this process to help identify an unwanted app.
  4. Turn on Play Protect scanning. Open Play Store > tap your profile picture > Play Protect > Settings, then enable Scan apps with Play Protect. Google says potentially harmful applications can put users, data, or devices at risk; flagged apps may be removed, and what happens can vary with Android version and connectivity.
  5. Check Chrome Safe Browsing. Go to Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Safe Browsing. Standard protection checks sites and downloads against Google’s unsafe lists. Enhanced protection performs additional real-time analysis and sends more activity data to Google, so choose it only if that added data sharing suits you.
  6. Avoid prompts that try to draw you back in. Do not tap fake virus alerts, suspicious update prompts, or unsolicited gambling links. Download software from official sources and heed Chrome’s warnings.

What Chrome’s protections can—and cannot—tell you

Safe Browsing is intended to protect against abusive websites and extensions, malicious and intrusive ads, malware, phishing, and social engineering. A warning is useful evidence about a risky site or download, but the absence of a warning does not establish which app or permission triggered an unwanted page.

Google’s 2025 security report, covering 2024, says Play Protect scanned more than 200 billion apps daily and identified more than 13 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play. The report also says more than 95 percent of installations of app families exploiting sensitive permissions highly correlated with financial fraud came from internet-sideloading sources such as browsers, messaging apps, or file managers. These are broad malware findings, not figures about gambling redirects specifically.

Google’s Chrome Security team reported reducing notifications on Android by over 7 billion a day in Q1 2026. Separately, Chromium documents that deceptive or spammy notifications can lead to suspicious downloads, attempts to steal personal information, or fraudulent storefronts; Chrome can offer a one-tap unsubscribe. These points explain why notifications merit checking, but do not show that a particular gambling page came from a notification.

What if the pages keep coming back?

If the behavior continues after you revoke the site’s notification permission and test recent apps, preserve the exact URL and the list of installed apps for a device-support or security-professional review. A repeatable redirect after opening one particular app is useful information to share. The cited guidance does not establish a single cause for every phone, and the symptoms alone cannot identify one.

A 2016 FTC complaint offers historical context: it described browser-abuse software that could repeatedly open tabs, advertise poker, change home pages, and redirect users to Google Play without authorization. That older case shows such behavior has existed, but it is not evidence of the cause on a current Android phone.
