A peer-to-peer (P2P) transfer can send file data directly between endpoints, avoiding an application server as the data path when a direct connection succeeds. But that does not mean there are no servers: peers need connection setup, and a TURN relay may carry traffic when direct connectivity fails. Whether P2P is a better fit than Amazon S3 depends on what the product needs—especially durable storage, real-world completion rates, performance across locations, fallback behavior, and operating costs.

The title suggests a specific product decision, but no product implementation details or measurements are available here. The comparison below explains what the architectures can offer without attributing unverified speed, savings, or privacy outcomes to that product.

What changes when file data travels peer to peer?

In a browser-based design using WebRTC, an RTCDataChannel can carry arbitrary application data between peers. MDN says data-channel traffic is protected with Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS), and describes peer-to-peer data as not passing through the web or application server. That is a statement about the data path, not a guarantee that the complete product has no servers or stores no information.

WebRTC still requires connection coordination. The WebRTC specification describes signaling as out of band and provides for STUN and TURN server configuration. A direct path may be possible; when it is not, a TURN relay can forward the traffic. Therefore, P2P can reduce the amount of file data handled by an application server on successful direct transfers, but it does not eliminate infrastructure or necessarily eliminate bandwidth costs.

DTLS is a transport security property, not a complete product security model. It does not by itself establish how a product authenticates users, authorizes access to a transfer, manages keys, handles stored data, protects endpoints, or limits metadata.

How does P2P compare with a well-built S3 transfer?

Amazon S3 is not limited to one large, uninterrupted upload request. Its multipart upload process splits an object into parts that can be uploaded independently and in parallel. Failed parts can be retried without resending the whole object, and an upload can be paused and resumed. AWS recommends multipart upload for objects of 100 MB or larger and documents checksum validation for object integrity.

Performance also depends on how S3 is used. AWS advises accessing S3 from compute in the same Region when possible to reduce latency and transfer costs. For distant users, S3 Transfer Acceleration can route uploads through CloudFront edge locations; AWS notes that its usefulness depends on network conditions. Customer-specific examples in AWS’s FAQ are not a guarantee and should not be treated as results for another product.

Question P2P transfer Amazon S3 transfer
Where does file data travel? Between peers on a direct path when connectivity permits; a TURN relay may carry data if direct connectivity is unavailable. To S3 for storage, using a transfer path that can include multipart upload and, where appropriate, Transfer Acceleration.
Does the service provide persistent object storage? Not inherent to the P2P transfer path; persistence depends on the product’s separate storage design. S3 is object storage; retention and access behavior depend on the product’s configuration and storage choices.
What happens after a transfer interruption? Depends on the application protocol and recovery implementation; the WebRTC standard supports data-channel reliability modes, but a product’s behavior must be verified. Multipart uploads allow failed parts to be retried and uploads to be paused and resumed.
Are performance outcomes guaranteed? No. Direct-connect success and completion time depend on users’ networks, connection setup, and relay fallback. No. Results depend on such factors as region placement, network conditions, transfer method, and whether acceleration helps.

Is P2P faster than S3?

There is no general answer. A direct peer connection may avoid routing file data through an application server, but that alone does not establish a shorter completion time. Connection setup, the users’ network paths, file size, and whether a relay is needed all affect the outcome. S3 can upload parts in parallel, retry failed parts, and use Transfer Acceleration in suitable circumstances.

A meaningful comparison requires measurements from the actual workload: representative file sizes, geographies and networks, connection success, relay frequency, completion rates, and elapsed time. AWS’s customer-specific acceleration examples should not be generalized to a different product, and no comparative timing result is established for the product named in the title.

Does P2P mean the file never touches a server?

Not necessarily. With a successful direct WebRTC path, the file data can travel peer to peer rather than through the application server. The product may still use servers for signaling, discovery, authentication, or other coordination, and a TURN relay may carry file data when a direct route cannot be established. A product may also choose to save a copy elsewhere.

To make a precise claim, establish which protocol is implemented, which services participate in setup, when TURN is used, whether transfers have a server-side fallback, and whether the application stores files or transfer metadata.

How should a product team choose?

Compare the complete transfer service, not just the path taken by file bytes. The right design depends on the workload and on the operational and security requirements that come with it.

  • Dual Interface Functionality: Features both USB Type-C and USB Type-A connectors in one device, allowing you to easily transfer files between smartphones, tablets, computers, and other devices without needing adapters or additional accessories
  • Persistence: Decide whether recipients need files to remain available after the sender disconnects or to be retrieved later. A P2P path alone does not provide durable object storage.
  • Connectivity and completion: Measure direct-connection success, TURN-relay use, and completion rates across the networks the product’s users actually use.
  • Performance: Test completion times across representative file sizes and user geographies. Compare P2P against a properly configured S3 upload, including multipart upload for large objects and acceleration only where it helps.
  • Total cost: Include storage, requests, outbound transfer, any acceleration, compute, signaling, and relay traffic. AWS says internet data transfer into S3 is not charged under the rules described in its support guidance, while some outbound transfer is charged; that does not determine the product’s total bill. Rates and cost impact vary with usage and geography, so consult current AWS pricing and measured traffic rather than relying on an unsupported P2P-versus-S3 estimate.
  • Operations and recovery: Account for connection setup, relay capacity, retries, interruptions, observability, and any fallback path. S3 multipart behavior is documented, while a P2P product’s recovery behavior depends on its implementation.
  • Security and access: Evaluate authentication, authorization, integrity checks, endpoint security, key handling, and metadata practices separately from transport encryption.

What evidence supports a first-person choice?

To explain why a particular product chose P2P over S3, its author would need to identify the implemented protocol and transfer path, the services used for signaling and TURN, and whether an S3 or other fallback exists. The case should also include representative transfer sizes, completion rates and timings, comparable monthly storage, request, egress and relay costs, the need for files to persist, and the product’s access-control, integrity and failure-recovery design.

Without those details, it is reasonable to describe the architectural trade-offs, but not to claim that P2P made this product faster, cheaper, more private, or more reliable than S3.
