Then check the exact error: browser or network problems, a temporary suspicious-login restriction, a service incident, and missing work or school access need different fixes. This guide walks through the checks in the order most likely to resolve the problem.
Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT?
Start by identifying where sign-in fails. A rejected password or “Wrong authentication method” points to how the account was registered. A browser check that repeats or a missing sign-in button can indicate browser or network interference. “We have detected suspicious login behavior” may follow repeated attempts, while a successful login to the wrong workspace can be an organization-access issue. OpenAI’s login troubleshooting guide and its guides to ChatGPT error messages and SSO and workspace access cover these distinct cases.
Try these fixes in order
- Use your original sign-in method. On the ChatGPT sign-in page, choose the method you used at registration: email and password, Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft, or Continue with Apple. If you are unsure, try the available methods in a private window. Avoid starting a new signup when the page says a user with that email already exists.
- Isolate the browser. Open a private or incognito window. If sign-in works there, clear the ChatGPT/OpenAI site cookies and cache in your regular browser. Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, cookie managers, and other extensions.
- Check network and browser settings. Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily and try a different network, such as mobile data. Allow cookies—including third-party cookies if the sign-in flow requires them—and JavaScript for the relevant OpenAI sign-in sites. If you are on managed work or school Wi-Fi, ask IT whether security filtering or challenge traffic is blocking sign-in.
- Check for an incident or temporary restriction. For a generic error, wait at least 60 seconds and check OpenAI Status. If the error says suspicious login behavior after repeated attempts, OpenAI advises waiting up to one hour before trying again; avoid repeatedly submitting credentials during that wait.
- Escalate with useful details. If the problem persists across browsers, devices, and networks, contact OpenAI Support. Include the exact error, a screenshot, the approximate time and time zone, browser/device/operating system, sign-in method, and VPN or proxy context. Include any request, ray, or device ID shown. For persistent technical errors, OpenAI’s error guide asks for a HAR file and browser console errors with timestamps.
Fix the problem that matches your error
“Wrong authentication method” or “There is already a user with email…”
These messages usually mean you are trying a different route from the one associated with the account. If you originally chose Google, Microsoft, or Apple, use that provider button rather than attempting an OpenAI password reset. With Apple Hide My Email, the account may be linked to an address ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com; choose Continue with Apple to reach it. OpenAI explains the authentication mismatch in its login guide.
Password reset email or verification code is missing
Confirm that you entered the email address for the account, then check spam, junk, and any quarantine folder. If the account was created through Google, Microsoft, or Apple, it may not have a separate OpenAI password to reset; use the original provider or reset credentials with that provider. For an email-and-password account, request a fresh reset message. If a verification code is delayed or expired, request another and use the newest code. OpenAI recommends allowing noreply@openai.com if mail filtering is preventing delivery.

Sign-in button is missing, or “Checking your browser…” repeats
Hard-refresh the page, then try a different browser or a private window. Disable VPNs, proxies, extensions, and content blockers temporarily; make sure cookies and JavaScript are enabled. If the challenge still loops, try another network. On corporate or managed Wi-Fi, your IT team may need to allow the traffic used for the browser challenge. “We have detected suspicious login behavior”
Stop retrying for up to one hour, as OpenAI recommends after multiple failed attempts. When you try again, use a private window, turn off a VPN or proxy, and consider another network. If the alert remains, contact Support with the account email, screenshot, time and time zone, device and browser details, VPN/proxy information, and any request, ray, or device ID shown.

“Something went wrong” or “Oops…”
Wait at least 60 seconds and check OpenAI Status for an incident. If none is listed, test a private window, another browser or device, and another network; clear site cookies and cache and temporarily disable extensions. If the failure continues in multiple environments, collect a HAR file and browser console errors with timestamps and send them to Support, following OpenAI’s error-message troubleshooting guidance.
Work or school login succeeds, but the workspace is missing
Signing in to an OpenAI account does not by itself guarantee access to a particular organization workspace. Check that you used the email on the invitation, selected the correct tenant or workspace, and followed the organization’s required SSO route. An expired or missing invitation, absent membership, identity-provider email mismatch, or network control can block workspace access even when another sign-in route works.

- Ask the workspace administrator or IT team to confirm your membership, assignment, and email mapping in the identity provider.
- Confirm whether your organization requires a specific SSO sign-in path and whether the invitation is still active.
- If those checks do not resolve the issue, contact OpenAI Support with the approximate time and any request ID.
OpenAI’s SSO and workspace troubleshooting guide addresses these organization-level checks. Do not create a replacement account or remove authentication profiles as a first-line workaround.
Account suspended or deactivated
Browser-cache and network fixes will not restore an account that has been disabled. Check for account notices from OpenAI. If you believe the restriction is mistaken, contact Support and include the relevant notice. Also verify that you are using the account associated with the subscription or data you expect: separate sign-in methods can lead to separate accounts.

What if ChatGPT asks for a second verification step?
A second-factor prompt is different from a password reset. The available MFA methods can vary by device, country, account tier, and how the account was created, according to OpenAI’s MFA guide. Follow the method shown for your account; if you cannot complete it, use OpenAI Support rather than repeatedly switching sign-in methods or creating another account.
