Bitcoin can fall as bond yields rise when investors demand more compensation to hold a non-yielding, risky asset, or when the same market repricing weakens appetite for risk. But the two moves are not linked by a reliable one-for-one rule: the yield measure, broader market conditions and crypto-specific pressures all matter.
Why higher yields can weigh on Bitcoin
The opportunity-cost channel
Bitcoin does not pay interest. When yields on bonds rise, some investors may see safer, income-producing assets as more attractive relative to speculative assets. This can put pressure on Bitcoin, particularly if the yield increase reflects higher real yields—the return on a bond after accounting for expected inflation—rather than higher inflation expectations alone.
Tighter financial conditions and weaker risk appetite
A rise in yields can also occur alongside a broader repricing of risk. If investors expect financial conditions to tighten or become less willing to hold volatile assets, Bitcoin may fall at the same time as equities or other risk-sensitive investments. In that case, the yield move and Bitcoin decline may reflect a shared shift in sentiment rather than a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
Bitcoin’s behavior has not been constant. A 2026 Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago working paper found that Bitcoin’s exposure to equities became statistically positive around 2020, while its estimated exposure to 10-year Treasury bond returns was not statistically distinguishable from zero. The authors characterize Bitcoin as having shifted toward a risk-on asset, but the finding is specific to their sample and methods; the paper is a working paper, and its authors note that working papers are not edited.

First identify which yield is rising
“Bond yields” can refer to different countries, maturities and measures. A short-term government yield is not interchangeable with a 10-year yield, and a nominal yield is not the same as a real yield. A nominal yield can rise because real yields increase, because inflation compensation increases, or because other factors—such as the term premium—change. Those moves can have different implications for investors.
For example, the Federal Reserve’s February 2025 Monetary Policy Report said the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose from just above 3.6% in mid-September 2024 to 4.6% by early February 2025. The report attributed much of the rise since mid-September to higher real yields. That episode illustrates why the headline yield alone does not tell you what changed; it is not evidence that every increase in the 10-year yield will push Bitcoin lower.

What the evidence says—and does not say
| Source and period | Measure | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago working paper, 2026 | Bitcoin’s exposure to U.S. equities and 10-year Treasury bond returns | Equity exposure became statistically positive around 2020; Treasury bond-return betas were not statistically distinguishable from zero. | A sample- and method-specific result; it does not establish a stable Bitcoin–yield rule. |
| Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report by Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, February 2023 | Intraday Bitcoin reactions to monetary and macroeconomic news | The authors found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in their event-study sample. | This finding concerns the events and period studied; it should not be generalized to every source of Bitcoin price movement. |
| S&P Global analysis, February 2017–March 2023 | S&P’s crypto-market index and the two-year U.S. Treasury risk-neutral yield | Historical correlation: -0.33. The inverse daily rolling three-month relationship appeared 63% of the time since May 2017, rising to 75% from May 2020 in the analysis’s chosen measure. | These are historical statistics for a broader crypto index, not a Bitcoin-only causal estimate, a current probability or a forecast. |
Taken together, the studies do not support a simple claim that a particular yield increase mechanically causes Bitcoin to fall. Their results differ partly because they examine different assets, time windows and methods. A chart showing two lines moving in opposite directions is useful for describing an episode, but it cannot by itself establish why the prices moved.
What to check when Bitcoin and yields move together
- Name the yield. Record the country, maturity and measure, such as the 10-year nominal Treasury yield or a real yield. If available, check whether inflation compensation or the term premium also changed.
- Compare the same time window. Put Bitcoin and the chosen yield on the same dates. Be clear whether you are comparing daily Bitcoin returns with daily yield changes or comparing price and yield levels; those are different comparisons. A short window can show coincidence, not causality.
- Check the broader risk backdrop. Compare Bitcoin with broad equity returns and market volatility over that same period. If risky assets are broadly weakening, a shift in risk appetite may help explain the overlap. The Chicago Fed findings above provide context, not a rule for predicting the next move.
- Consider the dollar as context, not a shortcut. Include the dollar only when you have reliable data for the same dates. The cited studies do not establish a stable quantitative Bitcoin–dollar relationship that would support treating it as a dependable explanation.
- Look for liquidity stress. Low liquidity can magnify price moves when markets absorb a shock. The Federal Reserve’s April 2025 Financial Stability Report describes that general amplification mechanism in the context of Treasury-market liquidity. It does not prove that Treasury liquidity caused a particular Bitcoin move.
- Check for crypto-specific pressure. Look for contemporaneous funding problems, leverage, market-structure stress or major ecosystem events. A New York Fed review identifies valuation pressure, funding risk, widespread leverage and interconnectedness as digital-asset vulnerabilities, but does not measure how much any one factor contributed to a specific Bitcoin decline.
How to describe a specific episode accurately
Start with what you can observe: which yield rose, by how much and over what dates; how Bitcoin performed in the same window; and whether equities, volatility, liquidity or crypto markets showed related stress. Then distinguish that description from an explanation. If several factors changed together, say the yield rise coincided with the decline and identify plausible channels, rather than claiming it caused the move unless the evidence supports that conclusion.
