Beetle-bait traps catch different species in different habitats because a trap only samples beetles that are present, active, and attracted to its particular bait. Habitat changes which beetles are available to encounter the trap; species differ in the resources they seek; and season, weather, trap design, and sampling effort all affect the catch. A baited trap is therefore a selective sampling tool—not a census of every beetle at a site.
Why do different beetles go to different bait?
Dung, carrion, and other resources can provide beetles with food or breeding opportunities. Bait releases chemical cues associated with a resource, and different species respond differently because of their diets, sensory responses, life histories, and local availability. Repeated species-specific associations support this explanation, but they do not establish one universal mechanism for every beetle group or habitat.
In a two-year Great Plains study, researchers caught 9,089 dung beetles representing 15 species. Mean capture differed among omnivore, herbivore, and carnivore dung, and individual species showed distinct preferences. Omnivore dung was the most attractive category overall in that study; human and chimpanzee dung had the highest reported means. Carrion also attracted substantial numbers, including a local contrast in which one species was associated with carrion while a close relative was rarely caught in it and favored omnivore dung. Why can the same trap catch different species in another habitat?
Habitat affects both the species available to be caught and the conditions in which beetles move and encounter odor cues. Vegetation, dung availability, and soil characteristics can also accompany differences in beetle abundance and community composition. The studies show that habitat and bait interact; they do not establish that one factor, such as vegetation alone, explains every difference.

In Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, researchers sampled 80 tropical forest fragments and adjacent cattle pastures using human-dung and fish-carrion traps. They collected 15,445 beetles from 42 species. Of these, 21 species were classified as dung specialists, seven as carrion specialists, eight as generalists, and six were too rare to classify. Generalists tended to change bait selection between habitats, while specialists tended to retain their resource category. Dung was selected most often overall, but the observed pattern varied with both habitat and resource. Read the Los Tuxtlas study.
A 2025 study in Tanzania’s Serengeti also found differences among grassland, wooded grassland, and bushland. Habitat, vegetation, herbivore dung, and soil characteristics were among the reported predictors of beetle measures. These are findings from that landscape, not universal estimates of how strongly habitat affects every beetle community. Read the Serengeti study.

What do other bait studies show?
Results vary with the region, habitat, beetles sampled, and bait protocol, so the studies below should not be combined into a single ranking of baits or habitats.

Does bait type change what a trap tells you?
Yes. Bait type influences which beetles are attracted, so a high trap count does not necessarily mean a site has more beetles overall. It may mean the chosen bait attracted more of the species present and active during that sampling period. In Botswana, for example, dung captured most of the sampled assemblage, yet species still showed associations with particular dung types or carrion.

Sampling method matters as well: bait attractiveness can shift community measures compared with flight-interception sampling. A catch is best understood as the result of the method used, not as a direct measure of the entire beetle community. See the method-comparison study.
How can you compare beetle catches between habitats?
Keep the protocol consistent so that habitat is not confounded with a change in bait or effort. Record the details that let another person interpret what the traps sampled.

- Use the same trap setup. Keep trap design, bait amount and preparation, placement rules, and deployment duration consistent between sites.
- Match timing and effort. Use the same collection schedule and comparable numbers of traps. Record date or season and weather where possible.
- Replicate across sites. Sample multiple locations in each habitat rather than treating one trap or one location as representative.
- Choose baits to fit the question. For a broad community picture, consider multiple baits and report each bait’s results separately. A multi-bait survey is still selective.
- Report what you measured. Distinguish abundance, species richness, and community composition, and describe the habitat, bait, trap design, and sampling effort.
Do not compare raw totals from different studies as if they measured the same thing unless bait, habitat, season, trap setup, deployment duration, and effort are sufficiently comparable. A biodiversity handbook describes pitfall traps and bait choices for dung- and carrion-beetle surveys, but the evidence here does not identify a single consumer trap model or a universal specification. The strongest evidence here concerns dung beetles and carrion-associated beetle assemblages. It should not automatically be extended to unrelated beetle families or to every insect someone might call a beetle. The cited studies use different regions and protocols, and they do not establish a universal quantitative ranking of habitat effects against bait effects across all beetles.
