Phones and laptops cover many everyday tasks, tablets tend to stay usable for years, and the post-pandemic rush to buy devices has faded. In IDC’s worldwide Q2 2026 shipment data, tablet shipments fell year over year—but detachables declined less than traditional slates, suggesting demand is holding up better for tablets that can also serve as compact computers.
Are people really buying fewer tablets?
Yes, according to recent worldwide shipment reports. But shipments measure devices moving through the sales channel, not how many people stopped buying tablets or how many households own one. The figures show a weakening market, not that tablets are about to vanish.

The numbers also show why “nobody buys tablets anymore” is too broad. Demand varies by quarter, buyer type and device design. Canalys described the post-pandemic decline in 2022 as a reduced need for tablets made worse by pressure on consumer spending; the Q2 2024 rebound shows that weaker demand is not the same as a permanently vanished market.
Why do tablets feel less necessary?
Phones and laptops cover the everyday middle ground
A phone is already close at hand for messaging, social apps, photos and quick browsing. A laptop is usually more comfortable for sustained typing, desktop applications and managing several windows. A tablet’s advantage is narrower: it gives you more screen than a phone in a lighter, more casual form than many laptops. That middle ground matters when the larger screen is useful often enough to justify another device.

People can keep a tablet for a long time
Tablets often remain physically usable for years, so owners have less reason to replace them on a short cycle. TIME made this comparison in 2014, describing tablet replacement timing as closer to a television than a smartphone. That is historical context, not a current measured average replacement interval; it helps explain why tablet sales can soften even when people still use the devices they already own.
Many apps do not make a separate tablet feel essential
When an app offers little beyond a phone-sized experience stretched across a larger screen, the tablet is harder to justify. TIME raised this issue in 2014. It should not be treated as a measured description of every current app: the practical question for a buyer is whether the apps they personally rely on make good use of a tablet’s screen, pen or keyboard.

Economic pressure makes an extra screen an easy purchase to delay
IDC linked the Q4 2023 shipment decline to economic conditions, spending freezes and postponed projects. In Q2 2026, IDC reported a larger year-over-year decline in consumer shipments than in commercial shipments. Together, these figures fit a straightforward pattern: when budgets are tight, a tablet that overlaps with devices someone already owns can wait.
Demand is stronger for tablets with a more distinct job
The Q2 2026 slate-versus-detachable shipment comparison points to a category split: traditional slates declined more sharply than detachable models. It does not prove that every detachable is a good laptop replacement, or explain every buyer’s choice. It does show that tablets with a clearer productivity role held up better in that period.

Who can still get real value from a tablet?
- Readers and frequent video viewers: A larger, lighter screen can be more comfortable than a phone for books, comics, articles and video.
- Students, children and families: A shared screen can be useful for schoolwork, learning apps and entertainment, especially when several people need occasional access.
- Artists and note-takers: A tablet is a better fit when its stylus and the apps you use make drawing or handwritten notes part of a regular routine.
- Workers with a specific mobile workflow: A detachable keyboard, pen input or a portable screen can help when those features match the work—not simply because the device is marketed as productive.
- Owners replacing a tablet they use often: If an old device is no longer suitable and the same recurring use still matters, a replacement may make sense.
Should you buy a tablet or use your phone or laptop?
Compare the device you are considering with the equipment you already own. The right choice depends less on the category’s popularity than on whether the tablet makes a frequent task more comfortable or practical.

A practical decision rule
- Pick one recurring task you want the tablet to improve, such as reading, handwritten notes or watching video while travelling.
- Try that task on your current phone or laptop. Note what is inconvenient: screen size, weight, touch input, pen support or something else.
- Check the specific tablet, apps and accessories against that inconvenience. Add accessory costs and verify the model’s software-support details.
- Buy only if the tablet solves the problem better often enough to justify its cost and an additional device. If the use is occasional or your existing devices already handle it well, skip it.
