Read receipts and typing indicators usually disappear because the conversation is using SMS/MMS instead of RCS, or because RCS is unavailable, disconnected, or disabled for one of the people in the chat. The indicators work across iPhone and Android only when the conversation is using RCS and both participants have working RCS support.
Which message mode is your chat using?
iPhone–Android conversations can use RCS or SMS/MMS. Both appear as green bubbles on iPhone, so bubble color alone cannot tell you which mode sent a particular message. iMessage is Apple’s messaging service for Apple-device conversations and appears in blue bubbles.
| Message mode | Who can use it | Read receipts and typing indicators | How to identify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| iMessage | Apple-device conversations | Supported, subject to settings. | Blue bubbles on iPhone. |
| RCS | Supported conversations between iPhone and Android, when both participants and their providers support it. | Supported when RCS is available and active for both participants; settings can also affect whether indicators are sent or shown. | Green bubbles on iPhone; check the conversation status and device settings to distinguish it from SMS/MMS. |
| SMS/MMS | Text messaging when RCS or iMessage is not being used. | Does not provide the RCS read-receipt and typing indicators. | Green bubbles on iPhone; check the message mode or settings rather than relying on color. |
Apple explains the differences between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS. Google’s RCS FAQ also says its sent, delivered, and read indicators do not appear for SMS/MMS.
Why the indicators may be missing
The message is going by SMS/MMS
If RCS is not available or active, a message may still send as SMS/MMS. That fallback does not carry RCS typing indicators or read receipts. A green bubble does not prove that RCS is active, so check the message or chat status as well as the settings.

RCS is not available on the iPhone
iPhone supports RCS messaging with non-Apple devices, but availability depends on the country and mobile carrier. A recent iOS version alone does not guarantee that RCS is available for your line. If you cannot find an RCS option in Messages settings, check with your carrier for availability and activation instructions.
RCS is not connected on Android
In Google Messages, open the profile menu, then go to Messages settings > RCS chats. The status should say Connected. Other statuses can include connecting, trouble connecting, or not supported. If the carrier has disabled RCS, Google advises contacting the carrier.

An indicator setting is off
In Google Messages, go to Profile menu > Messages settings > RCS chats and check that Send read receipts and Show typing indicators are on. To see that another person has read your message, that person’s read receipts must also be enabled. Google’s instructions for turning on RCS chats cover these settings and connection status.
What to check, in order
- Confirm the message mode. Check the chat or send status to see whether it is using RCS; do not use the iPhone’s green bubble as the only clue.
- Check iPhone availability. Look in the iPhone’s Messages settings for RCS messaging. If the option is missing, ask the carrier whether RCS is supported for your country, plan, and line, and how to activate it.
- Check the Android connection. In Google Messages, open Profile menu > Messages settings > RCS chats and confirm the status is Connected.
- Check the Android toggles. In that same RCS chats screen, turn on Send read receipts and Show typing indicators if you want to share those indicators.
- Check the other person’s setup. RCS must be available and working for both people; the other person’s read-receipt setting must also be on for you to see that a message was read.
What the missing indicators do—and do not—tell you
The absence of “Read” or a typing indicator does not establish that someone has ignored your message. The conversation may have fallen back to SMS/MMS, RCS may be unavailable or disconnected, or an indicator setting may be off. Google’s overview of RCS messaging describes the features and participant requirements.

Encryption is a separate issue: it is not the reason these indicators disappear. Google’s cross-platform FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted in the documented state. Apple describes RCS encryption as dependent on provider support and says rollout is evolving; its current comparison notes an encrypted RCS beta beginning with iOS 26.5 for supported network providers. Check the encryption indicator in your conversation and current provider documentation rather than assuming cross-platform RCS is encrypted.
