The fix depends on the message beside the track and whether it is an iTunes Store purchase, an Apple Music catalogue song, or a file you added yourself. Start by checking that status; then use the matching fix below. Avoid turning Sync Library off as a first step: doing so removes downloaded music.
Start with the message beside the song
On a Mac or Windows computer, open the Songs view and show the Cloud Status and Cloud Download columns. The status can distinguish a missing original file or a sync delay from a catalogue or account issue. Apple’s troubleshooting guide for missing or greyed-out songs explains these statuses and fixes.

- An exclamation point: Apple Music cannot locate the original file, so it cannot play or sync it.
- Waiting: the song is waiting to sync from the computer that holds the file.
- No Longer Available: the song has been removed from the Apple Music catalogue.
If no status is shown, look for an error message next to the track and consider where the song came from. A purchase, catalogue track, and imported file do not have the same remedy.
Fix one greyed-out song
iTunes Store purchase
Make sure the device is signed in to the Apple Account that bought the song. On a computer, the account may also need authorization to play iTunes Store purchases. If the purchase is missing, check the purchasing account and redownload the track from your purchases.

Explicit song blocked by restrictions
If the track is explicit and appears greyed out, music restrictions may be set to Clean. If you are permitted to access explicit content, change the music restriction to Explicit. This applies only when restrictions are causing the problem.
Song marked “No Longer Available”
This message means the track was removed from the Apple Music catalogue. Search Apple Music for another available version. If you find one, remove the unavailable entry from your library and add the alternative. Catalogue listings can change, so a replacement recording is not guaranteed.
Country or region message
For “This item is not currently available in your country or region,” check whether the song has an available listing in your country or region. If it does, remove the greyed-out version and add the available one. Apple Music availability varies by location; changing device settings cannot restore a track that is not licensed or listed there. Hidden song
A hidden song may appear greyed out. Use your account or library controls to unhide it, then try playing or downloading it again. The file itself may be fine.
Repair a missing local file or stalled sync
Exclamation point: locate or reimport the original
In the computer’s music library, select Locate for the track and point the app to the original file. If you cannot find it, import it again from its original source. Until the source file is available, it cannot be played or synced from that computer.
Waiting: bring the source computer online and update its library
Connect the computer holding the original file to the internet, update Cloud Library, and allow time for the sync. If the status remains stuck, Apple suggests deleting the entry and importing it again from the original source.

No Longer Available: replace the catalogue entry
Search for an alternative version, remove the unavailable entry, and add the alternative to your library. This is a catalogue issue, not a missing-file problem.

Check these conditions on every device before changing Sync Library:
- Each device is signed in to the Apple Account associated with the Apple Music subscription.
- Sync Library is enabled, and the devices have internet access.
- If your library starts on a computer, its Cloud Status is healthy and its Cloud Library has been updated before you update a synced computer.
Apple places Sync Library in Music settings on iPhone or iPad and in the Music app settings on Mac or Windows. The exact labels can vary by operating system and app version; use Apple’s device-specific Sync Library instructions if the setting is not where expected.

Use an off/on cycle only after backing up
If the account, network, and computer library are correct but syncing still fails, Apple suggests turning Sync Library off and on again across devices. Turning it off removes downloaded music, and a large library may take longer to sync again. Back up your library before making changes: Apple says, “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” An external drive can be one backup destination for a computer library, but it will not restore catalogue availability, fix account mismatches, or override restrictions.
What happens if an Apple Music subscription is cancelled?
Apple says cancelling Apple Music removes the Apple Music library from devices other than the original computer where the library is downloaded. Songs added or downloaded from the Apple Music catalogue and playlists tied to that catalogue or Sync Library are removed. iTunes Store purchases remain in the library. Catalogue access through a subscription is distinct from owning a store purchase.
