Bose headphones can sound quiet because one of several volume controls is low, the app or source audio is subdued, sound processing is changing playback, Bluetooth is using an unsuitable profile, or an opening or cable is obstructed or damaged. Start by comparing another app or track and another device; those tests help show whether the cause is the source or the headphones before you reset anything.
Find out whether the source or headphones are causing low volume
- Check every volume control. Raise the volume gradually on the headphones if they have an independent control, on the connected phone or computer, and in the playback app. Make sure the audio is not muted or paused and that the intended output device is selected. On Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, swipe up on the right earcup to raise volume and swipe down to lower it; other models use different controls, so consult the guide for your exact model. Bose’s 700 troubleshooting instruction is to “Increase the volume on the headphones, mobile device, and music app.” Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 troubleshooting.
- Try another recording and app. Play a different track, try another app or streaming service, and, if practical, play a file stored on the device. If only one track or app is quiet, check its recording level and settings rather than assuming the headset is faulty. Bose recommends source comparisons in its legacy QC15 and IE2 low-audio guidance. Custom QC15 low-audio troubleshooting; IE2 low-audio troubleshooting.
- Try another phone or computer. If the same headphones sound normal on another device, focus on the original device, its settings, or its Bluetooth connection. If they remain quiet across apps and devices, continue with checks that apply to the model.
To narrow down a persistent problem, note whether it affects one ear or both, whether it occurs over Bluetooth or wired audio if available, and whether a visible obstruction or cable issue is present. These comparisons help organize troubleshooting; they are not a Bose diagnostic scoring system.
Turn off source-side EQ and sound processing temporarily
Set the phone or computer equalizer to flat or off, and temporarily disable optional loudness, compression, or other sound enhancements. Also check the playback app’s EQ or audio effects. Test again, then restore any settings you prefer if they were not the cause. Bose’s QuietComfort 45 support guidance notes that “The EQ settings of your Bluetooth device can affect sound.” Bose QuietComfort 45 sound-quality troubleshooting.
If you are using Bluetooth on Windows
When Windows offers separate Bluetooth audio endpoints, select the Stereo listing rather than Hands-Free for full-range music playback. Bose gives this model-specific guidance for the QC45 and describes Stereo/A2DP versus Hands-Free/HSP for the SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II. The exact labels and menus can vary by Windows version and product. Bose QC45 troubleshooting; Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II guidance.

Check for blocked openings, cable faults, or model-specific issues
For in-ear Bose headphones
Inspect the ear tip and mesh grille for wax, dust, or debris. A blocked opening can make sound faint or poor on products such as the IE2 and Custom QC15. Clean only as the manual for your exact model allows; do not push tools into an opening or add liquid unless the manual expressly permits it. See Bose’s IE2 and Custom QC15 guidance.
For a wired legacy model
On a wired model, check the cable for visible damage and test without adapters or extension cables where possible. Bose’s Custom QC15 troubleshooting also says to check the Hi/Lo switch on the audio-cable connector. These checks do not apply to wireless models unless you are using the relevant cable or accessory. For Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
Bose advises wiping the outside surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and keeping moisture out of the earcups and 2.5 mm audio jack. Follow the 700 owner’s guide rather than applying cleaning advice for earbuds. Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 owner’s guide and troubleshooting.
Rule out Bluetooth connection problems
- Move the source device closer to the headphones and reduce obstructions or nearby interference.
- If multiple devices are connected, pause audio on the other device or disconnect it while testing. The Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 can connect to two devices at once but plays audio from only one active stream at a time.
- If needed, toggle Bluetooth off and on, then forget and re-pair the headphones. Clearing a stored headphone device list or resetting the headphones may also be an option, but the sequence varies by model; use that model’s manual instead of trying a button combination from another Bose product.
Bose specifies a Bluetooth range of 30 ft (9 m) for the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. That is a product-specific operating figure, not a universal threshold for quiet playback. Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 owner’s guide.

Check for firmware updates without treating them as a guaranteed fix
Use the Bose app or the official computer updater if updates are supported for your model. During an update, keep the headphones connected and within range as Bose instructs. The updater’s availability and instructions depend on the product and supported operating systems or browsers, so follow the current guidance for your model. Bose says updates may address minor bugs and compatibility issues; it does not promise that an update will fix low volume. Bose QuietComfort update guidance.
The QuietComfort update page lists version 1.0.6 dated 14 September 2023 as a “Product Launch” entry. It is a historical, model-specific release listing, not confirmation of the current firmware version or a requirement to update to that version.
