App Store screenshots look like simple images, but preparing them can mean choosing device-specific dimensions, handling multiple languages, and deciding whether to make separate exports or let App Store Connect scale them. The title describes a maker’s experience of spending hours on that work and building a tool in response; Apple’s published requirements explain why the workflow can be demanding, but do not establish what that tool does or how much time it saves.

Why App Store screenshots can take hours

The work is not just capturing an app screen. A screenshot set must meet Apple’s image rules and fit the display targets and locales an app supports. Apple says screenshots should visually communicate the app’s user experience, and App Store Connect organizes them by platform and device display target.

Device families have different dimensions

Apple’s current specifications list multiple accepted dimensions even within a display family. For example, the 6.9-inch iPhone category includes portrait screenshots at 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, and 1320 × 2868 pixels, depending on the supported model. The 13-inch iPad category lists portrait sizes of 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 pixels. These are examples, not a complete export checklist: consult Apple’s live screenshot specifications for the target platform, device, and orientation before exporting.

Locales and orientations add choices

Apps distributed in multiple locales may need localized screenshot sets, and accepted assets can differ by portrait or landscape orientation. A workflow that creates a separate design and export for every language, size, and orientation can multiply the number of files to review. Whether every variation needs a custom asset depends on the app’s interface and the developer’s presentation choices.

What Apple requires for screenshot uploads

App Store Connect accepts one to ten screenshots per supported device display target. Images must be JPEG, JPG, or PNG, and must not contain an alpha channel or transparency. Apple’s instructions place the upload area in the platform section of the app page; for iOS, choose the iPhone or iPad tab. The app must be in an eligible status, such as Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, or Developer Rejected.

Apple maintains a changing matrix of dimensions and supported display targets, including smaller and legacy sizes. Use the live specification rather than assuming that the examples above cover every model or that a dimension accepted today will remain current.

When one screenshot set can cover several sizes

A separate export for every device size is not always necessary. If the app’s interface is the same across sizes and locales, Apple says App Store Connect can scale down the highest-resolution required screenshots. Developers who want distinct assets for other sizes or localizations can add them through Media Manager. The choice is therefore between relying on eligible scaled assets and preparing more tailored sets—not an unconditional requirement to export every size.

How to upload screenshots in App Store Connect

  1. Open the app in App Store Connect and go to its platform section while it is in an eligible status.
  2. For an iOS app, select the iPhone or iPad tab for the assets you are adding.
  3. Upload one to ten JPEG, JPG, or PNG screenshots for the applicable display target, checking that the images have no alpha channel or transparency.
  4. Use Media Manager to add assets for additional device sizes or localizations when needed.

Apple also documents an App Store Connect API workflow for screenshot sets, display targets, locales, and asset reservations. That is a separate route for teams building an upload pipeline; it is not evidence that a design or export tool also uploads assets. See Apple’s App Store Connect API documentation for app screenshots.

Screenshot updates can require a new app version

Apple says that after a submission is approved, developers must create a new version to update screenshots. That makes the submission state part of the workflow: screenshot changes are not always a simple metadata edit that can be made to an already approved version.

Screenshot images are not app-preview videos

Screenshots are still images. App previews are optional videos with separate creation requirements and a distinct upload workflow. Apple’s instructions for making previews involve video-editing software and compatible devices; those requirements should not be confused with what is needed to prepare and upload screenshots.

What the title does—and does not—tell us about the tool

The title presents a first-person story: its author says repeated screenshot work led them to build a tool. Apple’s documentation gives concrete reasons the task can become repetitive, but it does not identify the author, the product, its capabilities, or any measured time savings. Without attributable product documentation or an author statement, it would be misleading to claim that the tool generates device sizes, localizes designs, validates files, or uploads screenshots.

For anyone evaluating a screenshot workflow or tool, the useful questions follow from Apple’s requirements: does it support current dimensions by platform and display family; can it produce portrait and landscape assets; does it handle localized and device-specific sets or rely on scaling; does it check file formats and transparency; and does it stop at design and export, or also support App Store Connect uploads? Those capabilities should be verified for the particular product rather than inferred from the title.
