An Android security-update date does not mean that every fix in every security bulletin is installed on your phone. Android patches pass through Google, component suppliers and phone makers before reaching specific models, regions and carrier variants; some bulletin items do not apply to a particular device, while others may already have arrived in an earlier update. The date is useful, but it is not a complete patch inventory.

Why an Android update can leave some bulletin patches out

Android security fixes move through a supply chain rather than arriving as one identical package for every phone. Google and the Android Open Source Project publish platform fixes; chipset and other component suppliers provide fixes for their products; and manufacturers integrate relevant changes into builds for particular devices, software branches, regions and carriers. The final update a user installs is therefore device-specific.

Android’s bulletin overview separates Android, Pixel and partner or vendor bulletins. It says Android platform security fixes are merged into the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) 24–48 hours after a quarterly bulletin release. That is a step in publishing the platform fixes, not a promise that a finished update for every phone will be available or installed within that period. Device makers may publish additional product-specific details.

Updates can also arrive through more than one channel. Google Play system updates can deliver selected modules independently of a full over-the-air (OTA) update. A phone may therefore receive some security-related components separately from its main system update, while other fixes depend on the manufacturer’s device build.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What “missing” means—and what it does not

A bulletin is not a checklist where every listed item necessarily applies to every Android device. A patch may be absent because the affected component is not present on that model, because the manufacturer says the item does not apply, because the fix was included in an earlier update, or because it has not yet reached that device’s build. Those cases are different from a fix that applies to the device but has not been delivered.

Samsung’s September 2026 security release illustrates the distinction: it separates Google patches, Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE), items already included in earlier updates, and items not applicable to Samsung devices. A security bulletin date alone cannot tell you which of those categories accounts for a particular item on your phone.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

The word “regularly” should not be read as “every vendor omits patches in every release.” Current Android documentation describes a fragmented, device-specific process, and historical measurements found differences among manufacturers. The available evidence does not establish a single current, cross-vendor omission rate for 2026.

Historical measurements show variation, not a current brand ranking

A Security Research Labs study reported by The Guardian on April 13, 2018, estimated these ranges of missed patches among the vendors it examined:

Vendor group in the 2018 report Reported missed-patch range
Google, Sony and Samsung Up to one patch
OnePlus and Nokia One to three patches
HTC, Huawei, LG and Motorola Three to four patches
TCL and ZTE More than four patches

These are historical findings from a 2018 study, not a present-day scorecard. They should not be used to predict whether a current model is patched, or to rank brands in 2026.

A separate device-centric study, Large-scale Security Measurements on the Android Firmware Ecosystem, analyzed 367,000 security updates for 599 devices released from 2014 through 2023. The 2024 NDSS study reported substantial variation by manufacturer, support type, intended geolocation and device type. Its scope demonstrates why model and market matter; the total number of updates analyzed is not an omission rate and does not, on its own, identify which current phone is best patched.

Why the patch date is not the same as the patch gap

Google Project Zero describes the patch gap as the time between a vulnerability fix being released and the user installing the relevant update. Several separate events sit between those points: the bulletin publication, the manufacturer’s build, any carrier or regional rollout, and installation on an individual phone. A recent date on the device is evidence that an update reached it, but does not by itself establish the inclusion or applicability of every bulletin fix.

Android developer guidance recommends assessing whether core system components are protected against the Android Security Bulletin and recognizes Google Play system updates as an independent update channel. For a practical check, consider both dates shown by the phone and compare them with the bulletins relevant to the model and manufacturer. Keep in mind that a bulletin may describe fixes that do not apply to the device or were incorporated earlier.

How to check your phone’s update status

  1. Find both update dates. Open the Settings app and look for the Android security update and Google Play system update entries. Menu names and locations vary across Android versions and manufacturers; use Settings search for “security update” or “Google Play system update” if needed.
  2. Identify the exact device and software branch. Note the phone model and, where relevant, carrier or regional variant. Those details matter because manufacturers publish builds for different models, regions and software branches.
  3. Compare with applicable bulletins. Check the Android bulletin and the relevant Pixel or manufacturer bulletin for the period. Look for whether a fix is listed as included, previously included, or not applicable; do not assume every item in a general bulletin applies to your handset.
  4. Separate availability from installation. A manufacturer’s release announcement or bulletin is not proof that your specific phone has received the build. Check the dates on the phone itself; rollout timing can differ by model, region or carrier.

If a date looks old, it is a reason to investigate the exact model’s support and rollout status, not enough by itself to determine which vulnerabilities remain unpatched. The relevant bulletins and device applicability are needed to make that judgment.

How to choose an Android phone with stronger security support

Do not choose on update frequency alone. Compare the exact model and market on four separate questions:

  • Completeness: Does the manufacturer disclose which Android, chipset and OEM fixes are included, excluded or already present?
  • Latency: How long after Google’s bulletin does an installable build reach the model, and how long does rollout take in the regions or carrier channels you care about?
  • Support duration: How many years of security updates are promised for that exact model and market, and from what starting date?
  • Consistency: Do lower-cost models, carrier variants and non-US regions receive a cadence comparable to the manufacturer’s flagship and US models?

For one clearly stated example, Google’s Pixel support documentation says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of updates starting when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. That is a model-family commitment with a defined starting point; check the terms for the exact phone and market rather than treating it as a guarantee about every Android device or every region.

For users with higher security needs, favor a phone with a clear, long support commitment and transparent model-level bulletins. Those signals make it easier to assess support and patch applicability; they do not establish that every vulnerability applies to, or is fixed on, every device.
