Android battery optimization can delay notifications by limiting an app’s background activity. On Pixel phones, Google specifically says Adaptive Battery may delay notifications. Check the affected app’s battery setting first: if it is Restricted, switch it to Optimized; if timely alerts still do not arrive, test Unrestricted and check whether delivery improves. These settings and their effects vary by device.
Why Android battery settings can delay notifications
To save power, Android and phone makers can limit what apps do while you are not using them. If an app cannot run background work or access the network as needed, it may not fetch new information promptly, so its notification can arrive late or appear only after you open the app.
Google says Pixel’s Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps and may reduce performance and delay notifications. Android also has a Restricted state: on AOSP Android 9 and later, a restricted app may be prevented from running jobs, triggering alarms, or using the network in the background. The exact restrictions depend on the manufacturer, so these behaviors are not identical on every Android phone.
Other settings can contribute. Battery Saver limits or turns off some background activity; pausing an unused app can stop it from running in the background and sending notifications; and background-data limits or Data Saver can affect an app’s ability to receive data when it is not open.

How to fix delayed notifications

Check the app’s battery mode
On supported Pixel software, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. If the app is set to Restricted, change it to Optimized and test notification delivery. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later.

Test Unrestricted for time-sensitive alerts
If notifications remain late and prompt delivery matters, return to the app’s battery setting and try Unrestricted. Android Developers describes this mode as allowing all background work, which can improve an app’s ability to deliver updates while unused. It may also use more battery, so apply it only to the affected app and check whether it solves the problem.

Test whether Battery Saver is involved
If delays happen only while Battery Saver is on, turn it off temporarily and see whether notifications arrive on time. Google says Battery Saver limits or turns off background activity, so an improvement during this test points to that mode as a possible contributor.

Allow an infrequently used app to remain active
Open the app’s App info > Unused apps settings and turn off Pause app activity if unused if the app needs to send alerts even when you rarely open it. Android’s unused-app management can restrict background activity and notifications.

Check background data and Data Saver
Make sure the affected app is allowed to use background data. This is especially worth checking if alerts are delayed on cellular data or only while Data Saver is enabled. The available controls and their locations vary by Android version.

Review the app’s notification settings
If changing battery and data settings does not help, confirm that notifications are enabled for the app and consult your phone maker’s support guidance. Battery and data restrictions are possible causes, not a diagnosis of every notification problem.

Choose a battery setting that fits the app
Optimized is the sensible starting point for most apps. Unrestricted allows more background work and may improve timely delivery, but can increase battery use. Google warns that turning off battery optimization can let an app run more while unused. Use the stronger setting selectively rather than changing battery controls for every app.

Menu names and paths differ across manufacturers, Android versions, and device software. If the Pixel path above does not match your phone, search Settings for the affected app’s battery or background-usage controls, then confirm the current labels with your phone maker’s support page. Do not assume that a setting called Restricted or Unrestricted behaves exactly the same on every device.
