A graphical app can make those settings easier to inspect and may help monitor tunnels, but it is optional—and the advertised features of SSH Config Manager have not been independently verified here.
The title’s “why I built it” framing implies a personal origin story. No creator account is available to establish the author’s motivation or experience, so this article explains the practical need such a tool can address without inventing a development story.
What a manager adds to macOS SSH
Apple documents both command-line connections in Terminal and a graphical “New Remote Connection” flow. For repeat connections, OpenSSH’s per-user configuration file, ~/.ssh/config, lets you define host-specific settings and use short aliases rather than retyping connection details. OpenSSH remains the connection tool; a manager is an interface for organizing or editing its configuration and, depending on the app, managing related tunnels.
That distinction matters: you do not need SSH Config Manager—or any GUI manager—to use SSH on a Mac. A visual editor may be useful if you want to review host entries and forwarding rules together, while a person comfortable editing text can work directly with the standard file.

What SSH configuration and tunnels do
Host entries and jump hosts
A host block in ~/.ssh/config can hold connection settings for a server. OpenSSH’s ProxyJump option routes a connection through one or more jump proxies—for example, when a destination server is reachable only from a bastion host. This is standard OpenSSH functionality, not a capability that requires a manager.
Local forwarding (-L or LocalForward)
Local forwarding listens on a TCP port on your Mac and carries connections through SSH to a destination reachable from the remote side. It is commonly used to reach a service on a private network through an SSH-accessible server.

Remote forwarding (-R or RemoteForward)
Remote forwarding opens a TCP listener on the remote machine and carries connections through the secure channel toward a destination on the local side. Whether the server permits the forwarding depends on its SSH policy.
Dynamic forwarding (-D or DynamicForward)
Dynamic forwarding creates a local listener that can act as a SOCKS proxy: the application using it supplies the destination. It differs from a fixed local or remote forward, where the destination is specified in advance.

These descriptions reflect documented OpenSSH behavior. They do not establish how reliably any particular graphical app creates or maintains a tunnel.
What SSH Config Manager advertises
The Mac App Store listing for SSH Config Manager advertises a visual and raw-text editor for ~/.ssh/config, local, remote, and dynamic tunnels, multiple forwards per connection, multi-hop ProxyJump, agent and private-key authentication, host-key verification, tunnel health monitoring and reconnect behavior, and version history. These are claims in the publisher’s listing; they have not been independently tested here.

The listing also describes the app as sandboxed and says it accesses ~/.ssh after permission is granted. That privacy description is likewise the publisher’s account, not an independent security assessment. Anyone evaluating an SSH manager should consider what access it requests and how it handles keys and host-key verification.
When a graphical manager may help
A manager is most relevant when you have several host entries or forwarding rules to keep organized, want to inspect configuration in a GUI, or value an interface that reports tunnel state. Those are reasons to consider one, not proof that a particular app will meet them in practice.

If you compare tools, check the details that affect your workflow rather than relying on a feature checklist alone:
- Does it edit the standard OpenSSH configuration file, or keep connections in a separate store?
- Does it support the forwarding modes and jump-host routes you actually use?
- How does it use private keys and the SSH agent, and how does it verify host keys?
- What does it do when a tunnel drops, and can you export or reuse your configuration elsewhere?
- What permissions does it request to access SSH files?
The available product evidence does not support a ranked comparison or a conclusion about the app’s reliability, security, or performance.
Remote Login to your Mac is a separate security choice
Using your Mac as an SSH client to connect outward to another server is different from enabling SSH access into your Mac. Apple’s instructions for enabling that inbound access are specifically about making the Mac a remote-login target. Apple warns: “Allowing remote login to your Mac can make it less secure.” Read Apple’s Remote Login guidance before enabling it, and do not treat that warning as a blanket claim about ordinary outbound SSH connections.
