An old router can slow your network if its Wi-Fi standard, Ethernet ports, or capacity cannot keep up with your internet plan and connected devices. But a slow speed test alone does not prove the router is at fault: your broadband service, modem or ONT, device, Wi-Fi band, distance, walls, interference, or cable can also be the bottleneck. Compare wired and Wi-Fi speeds first, then fix the limit you find.
How to tell whether the router is slowing you down
Run a speed test on a device near the router, ideally once over Wi-Fi and once over Ethernet. Compare the results with your broadband plan, and repeat the test on another device if you can. A router cannot deliver more internet speed than the connection supplied to it, and the device or cable may also limit the result. NETGEAR explains common speed limits; Linksys also recommends checking the connection path.
- If Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow: Check the broadband service, modem or ONT, router’s WAN connection, and cable. Contact your internet provider if the wired result is still far below what your plan should provide.
- If Ethernet is satisfactory but Wi-Fi is slow: Focus on the wireless band, client device, router placement, signal obstacles, and interference.
One test is only a snapshot. If possible, compare results at different times and on more than one device before deciding that the router needs replacing.
What older router limits can affect speed
The router and the device connecting to it both need to support the capabilities you expect to use. An older Wi-Fi generation or slower Ethernet port can cap a connection even when the broadband plan is faster. The same applies to a client device: a phone or laptop with older Wi-Fi hardware cannot take advantage of features its radio does not support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the router’s specifications for its Wi-Fi standards and bands, WAN port, and LAN port speeds. Compare those with your plan and the devices you use. A wired link can also be limited by its cable: NETGEAR gives Cat5 as an example of a cable that may restrict a connection to 100 Mbps. Check the reported link rate and cable before replacing anything; a cable is not a likely remedy for a Wi-Fi-only coverage problem.
Try these fixes before replacing the router
1. Test the right band for the device and location
Wi-Fi bands trade range for speed and congestion. In general, 2.4 GHz reaches farther and passes through obstacles better. The 5 GHz band can provide faster throughput nearby, while 6 GHz requires compatible router and client hardware and is most useful close to the router. Actual results depend on the equipment and surroundings. Some smart-home devices only support 2.4 GHz, so do not assume every device should use a faster band. Microsoft describes how Wi-Fi and home layout interact, and Google lists factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance.

2. Improve router placement and check for congestion
Compare the connection near the router with the result in the room where it feels slow. Distance, walls, cabinets, and other obstructions can weaken a signal. Nearby wireless networks and household devices can also interfere. Place the router in a more open, central location if practical, then retest.
If the signal is still poor, check the router’s channel settings and firmware. Channel availability varies by country and firmware, so avoid choosing an arbitrary channel width; use automatic or default settings if you are unsure. ASUS provides guidance on channel settings and interference and explains channel-width options.

3. Restart devices and check for updates
- Restart the affected device and router, then run the same speed test again.
- Open the router’s app or administration page and check for a firmware update. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- If the router came from your internet provider, ask whether it updates automatically or whether you need to take action.
Firmware updates can improve stability and security, but they cannot overcome a slow service plan, a port-speed limit, or a hardware capability limit. The FTC recommends checking for router software updates; Ofcom also offers broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
When replacing the router makes sense
Replacement is worth considering when testing shows that the router’s Wi-Fi generation, WAN or LAN port speed, or capacity is the limit; when the manufacturer no longer provides important firmware or security updates; or when coverage remains poor after reasonable placement and configuration changes. There is no universal age at which every router becomes too old to use.

Before buying your own router, confirm that your internet provider supports it and check any setup requirements. Compare these factors against your household’s actual needs:
- Your broadband plan and the router’s WAN compatibility.
- Ethernet port speeds for wired devices.
- Supported Wi-Fi standards and bands, including compatibility with your devices.
- Your home’s layout, size, and obstacles.
- Ongoing firmware and security update support.
- Provider setup or support requirements and the total cost.
A mesh system or access point can help address a specific weak-coverage area, but it does not increase the speed supplied by your internet provider. Ofcom cautions that boosters can affect speed, so treat additional coverage equipment as a solution for a coverage problem rather than a guaranteed speed upgrade.

Keep router security in view
Performance is not the only reason to replace a router. If its manufacturer no longer provides important security updates, continued use may leave it exposed to known vulnerabilities. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance identifies WPA3 as the newer and strongest Wi-Fi encryption option; WPA2 is also an option for compatible equipment. Check what your router supports and use the strongest available setting that works with your devices.
