If an electric weed eater won’t feed line, the cause is often an empty or incorrectly seated spool, tangled or incompatible line, debris in the head, or a mismatch between how you’re operating the feed mechanism. First disconnect power, then identify whether your trimmer uses a bump-feed, automatic-feed, or fixed-line head. The fix—and whether bumping the head is appropriate—depends on the model.
Make the trimmer safe before inspecting the head
Switch off and unplug a corded trimmer. For a cordless model, remove the battery. Wait until the cutting head has stopped completely, then place the trimmer on a stable surface. Wear gloves when handling the spool, and follow your model’s manual for opening and servicing the head. Yard Force advises against maintenance with the battery installed and recommends gloves when handling a spool (Yard Force electric-trimmer guidance).
Find the model number and check the manual to identify the head type before trying to advance line. Some automatic-feed models should not be bumped; the BLACK+DECKER NST2018 manual, for example, describes an automatic feed system (NST2018 instruction manual).
Check the line and spool first
Empty, loose, or poorly seated spool
With power isolated, open the head as the manual directs. Check whether line remains on the spool and whether the spool sits correctly in its housing. A spool that is empty, worn, faulty, or fitted incorrectly may prevent feed. Toro lists an out-of-line spool as a possible reason its bump head does not advance line (Toro operator manual). Replace a worn spool with the compatible type specified for your model.

Tangled, crossed, or incorrectly wound line
Line that is crossed or jammed can bind and stop advancing. Remove the spool and unwind the affected line. Reload it in the direction shown by the arrow and instructions on the spool or in the manual, keeping the winding neat. For the bump head covered in MTD’s guidance, the two strands must stay in their separate top and bottom reel tracks (MTD bump-head guidance). Toro also recommends removing the bump-head cover and untangling line trapped in the housing.
Incorrect line diameter or type
Use the line type and diameter specified in your trimmer’s manual. Yard Force lists an incorrect line type or diameter as a possible cause of feed problems on its cordless models (Yard Force cordless-trimmer guidance). There is no universal line size that fits every electric trimmer.

Debris or an obstruction in the head
While the trimmer remains disconnected from power, clear grass and other debris from the spool housing and feed path. Debris under the guard or inside the bump-head housing can obstruct operation; Toro includes these among the possible causes of a bump head that will not advance line.
Use the feed method your trimmer was designed for
Bump-feed head
A bump-feed head releases line through a model-specific bumping action. For the bump head in MTD’s instructions, bump the head while it is spinning at or near full rpm, and keep enough line out for the mechanism to advance it. Do not apply that procedure to another head type without checking its manual.

Automatic-feed head
An automatic-feed head advances line as designed by its particular system. BLACK+DECKER says its AFS system feeds automatically and does not require bumping or pressing a button (BLACK+DECKER AFS information). Other automatic-feed models may work differently, so use the model’s instructions rather than assuming all systems behave alike.
Fixed-line head
A fixed-line head does not advance line from a wound spool in the same way as bump-feed or automatic-feed heads. Check the manual for its line-loading or replacement procedure; do not try bumping it to release line.

Reload or replace line using the model’s specifications
- Identify the model and feed-head type. Use the model number and manual to confirm whether the head is bump-feed, automatic-feed, or fixed-line.
- Isolate power. Unplug a corded unit or remove the cordless battery, then wait for the head to stop.
- Open and inspect the head as directed. Check the remaining line, spool seating, winding, tangles, and debris.
- Reload or replace the line. Follow the specified diameter, type, winding direction, and spool format. Troy-Bilt provides model-oriented refill guidance (Troy-Bilt string-trimmer refill guidance).
- Reassemble and test according to the manual. Keep clear of the cutting head and use only the feed procedure specified for that model.
If you need a new spool, verify the exact trimmer model and spool compatibility before buying one. Use bulk line only if the manual supports reloading the spool; otherwise, choose a compatible prewound spool.

Line can sometimes stick to itself after prolonged operation with very short line allows heat to build and soften it, according to MTD’s bump-head guidance. With power isolated, inspect for sticking or binding and reload the spool if needed.

Also check for wear or damage in the housing and feed mechanism. Yard Force advises checking the housing and whether the bump mechanism moves freely; if the problem persists, seek support. A broken pin on the actuating lever of a BLACK+DECKER automatic spool can cause line to feed freely, and BLACK+DECKER directs users to a service center for that repair (BLACK+DECKER service guidance). Don’t force a damaged mechanism; contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center.
