An e-reader may refuse to open a book because its file format or version is unsupported, the book is protected by DRM and tied to another store or account, or the download is incomplete or unauthorized. Start with the device model, file extension and book source. Then use the matching fix: re-download a store book, complete the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) workflow for an ACSM file, or transfer a compatible, unprotected file by USB.

First identify the reader, file and source

Write down the e-reader’s brand and exact model, the book’s file extension, and where the book came from: the reader’s store, a library or another retailer. Those details determine which troubleshooting path applies. A valid purchase or loan does not guarantee that a file will open on every brand of reader.

Compare the file with the official format list for the exact model. Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI among supported formats, but Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi do not support EPUB3. An EPUB extension alone therefore does not establish compatibility. See Kobo’s supported-format list.

Also distinguish a finished ebook from an .acsm file. Kobo says an EPUB or PDF book with an ACSM extension is DRM-protected; the ACSM is a license/download file, not the ebook to open directly on the reader.

Choose the fix based on the book’s protection and source

What you have Likely next step
A Kobo store book that errors or will not open Remove and download it again, then try Kobo’s account-repair and sign-in steps.
An ACSM file for a Kobo book Open it in ADE, authorize the computer and Kobo, and transfer the downloaded ebook.
A library loan showing “Content locked” Check date/time and matching authorization on the Kobo and in ADE, then re-download and transfer the loan.
A non-protected EPUB or PDF on a computer Check model compatibility, then use Kobo’s computer-transfer method with a direct USB connection.
A Kindle book with DRM Open it in the Kindle app or device associated with the account that has access.

DRM systems are not interchangeable. Kobo supports Adobe DRM and Social DRM, while Amazon says a Kindle ebook with DRM is limited to Kindle apps and devices. A book bought from one store may therefore not open on a different reader even when its extension appears familiar.

Fix an ACSM or Adobe DRM book on Kobo

For an Adobe DRM book, use ADE to retrieve the finished ebook and transfer it to an authorized Kobo. Kobo’s instructions describe this workflow in Add eBooks with Adobe Digital Editions.

  1. Install and open ADE on a computer, then open the downloaded .acsm file in ADE so it can download the ebook.
  2. Authorize the computer in ADE when prompted. Connect the Kobo to the computer and authorize the reader as part of the same Adobe DRM workflow.
  3. Transfer the downloaded book from ADE to the Kobo, then eject the reader safely and check whether the book opens.

Kobo’s current ADE help says to use a ByteBooks ID rather than an Adobe ID when ADE next asks for sign-in. Do not try to open the ACSM file itself on the e-reader or assume USB transfer alone removes DRM.

Retry a Kobo store download or repair the account

For a Kobo book that will not open, Kobo’s troubleshooting order starts with a fresh download and then checks the account used on the reader. Follow Kobo’s eBook and audiobook troubleshooting steps:

  1. Remove the book from the reader and download it again.
  2. Repair the reader account if the error persists.
  3. Confirm the reader is signed in to the Kobo account that owns the book.
  4. Sign out and back in, then retry the book.

If the problem is a download rather than opening a book already on the reader, verify that Wi-Fi is stable before repeating Kobo’s download and account-repair steps. A book purchased from Kobo may sync through the Kobo library; it does not necessarily need to be exported and sideloaded.

Resolve a library loan’s “Content locked” error

OverDrive says the “Content locked” error on a Kobo can occur when authorization information on the reader does not match the information in ADE. Its instructions, last updated June 22, 2026, are in OverDrive’s Kobo content-locked troubleshooting guide.

  1. Check the Kobo’s date and time settings.
  2. Reset authorization on the Kobo and in ADE, then authorize both using the appropriate same account.
  3. Re-download the library loan and transfer it again through ADE.

OverDrive’s current instructions say ADE reauthorization now requires a ByteBooks ID; Adobe IDs are no longer supported there. Using the same email address as the old Adobe ID can help retain access to books already downloaded.

Some newer Kobo readers can borrow library books directly, so ADE is not required for every Kobo library loan. Use the workflow for the way that particular loan was delivered. Treat a factory reset as a last resort: OverDrive warns that it erases information stored on the reader. Back up content first and try authorization reset and re-download steps before considering it.

When USB transfer helps—and when it cannot

A computer connection is useful for transferring an authorized ADE book or sideloading a compatible, non-protected EPUB or PDF. Kobo’s computer-transfer instructions explicitly exclude DRM-protected and third-party files from this non-protected transfer method: Add non-protected PDF and ePub files to a Kobo using a computer.

Use the cable included with the reader and connect directly to the computer where possible. Kobo notes that some USB-C hubs may not detect an e-reader. A cable cannot make an unsupported format compatible or bypass DRM. If the original cable is missing or damaged, confirm the exact model, connector and data-transfer capability before choosing a replacement.

Check Kindle access and eligible DRM-free downloads

Amazon says a Kindle ebook with DRM can be read only in Kindle apps and devices. First use the Kindle app or device connected to the account that owns or borrowed the book, rather than transferring the protected file to a different brand of e-reader.

Amazon’s policy effective January 20, 2026 allows verified purchasers to download EPUB or PDF copies of confirmed DRM-free titles from Manage Your Content and Devices. This applies only to eligible titles whose publishers have made them DRM-free; it does not apply to borrowed Kindle Unlimited or other service copies. Amazon says changes after a publisher updates DRM settings may take 24–72 hours to become available. See Amazon’s Kindle DRM help page.

Use the error and symptoms to narrow the cause

  • Unsupported format or version: Confirm the precise reader model and the format list. Do not assume all EPUB versions work on all Kobo models.
  • An ACSM file appears in downloads: Use ADE to retrieve the licensed ebook; the ACSM is not the finished reading file.
  • “Content locked” or “Oops! This document couldn’t be opened” on a library book: Check the Kobo/ADE authorization path, including date and time, before resetting the device.
  • A store book disappears or fails after download: Retry the download and verify the signed-in account before attempting a different transfer method.
  • A DRM-protected title came from another store: Use the store’s supported app or reader, or check whether that title has an eligible DRM-free download option.
  • The reader is not detected over USB: Try the included cable and a direct computer port rather than a hub; verify that the connection supports data, not charging alone.
