AMD bought Finnish AI company Silo AI to add AI talent and software expertise that it said would help customers develop and deploy models on AMD hardware. The deal was meant to strengthen AMD’s AI capabilities as it competes with Nvidia, but the available acquisition disclosures do not show that it changed market share or competitive balance.
What AMD bought and when the deal closed
AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire Silo AI on July 10, 2024, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million. AMD said the purchase supported its end-to-end AI strategy, based on open standards and partnerships across the global AI ecosystem. AMD’s announcement also noted that it had invested more than $125 million across a dozen AI companies in the preceding 12 months; that figure is AMD’s own account of its investments.
AMD announced the acquisition’s completion on August 12, 2024. Its SEC filing identifies August 9, 2024, as the legal completion date, so the announcement date and closing date are different. AMD’s completion announcement and AMD’s SEC filing document the distinction.
How to understand the $665 million headline figure
The approximately $665 million figure was AMD’s announced value for the all-cash transaction. In its SEC filing, AMD reported $553 million in purchase consideration after closing adjustments, transaction costs, and deferred cash compensation. These are distinct measures, not competing estimates of the same accounting figure.

AMD’s filing allocated that $553 million of purchase consideration to $19 million in identifiable intangible assets, $43 million in net liabilities assumed, and $577 million in goodwill. The goodwill exceeded the purchase consideration because the allocation includes net liabilities. AMD said the goodwill reflected Silo AI’s workforce and its expected role in accelerating AI model and software development and deployment on AMD hardware. The filing explains the accounting treatment.
What Silo AI brought to AMD
Silo AI was an AI lab based in Helsinki, Finland, with operations in Europe and North America. AMD described its work as building tailored AI models, platforms, and solutions for enterprise customers across cloud, embedded, and endpoint computing. AMD named Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever as examples of customers. AMD’s acquisition announcement and completion announcement describe those capabilities and customers.

Models, platforms, and integration expertise
AMD highlighted Poro and Viking, Silo AI’s open-source multilingual language models developed on AMD platforms, as well as SiloGen, its model platform. The acquisition therefore brought more than model research: Silo AI also had experience tailoring and integrating AI systems for enterprise customers.
People joining AMD
AMD said the Silo AI team would join its Artificial Intelligence Group, led by senior vice president Vamsi Boppana. In a September 2024 TIME interview, AMD CEO Lisa Su described the team as 300 engineers and scientists. That is a contemporaneous figure from Su, not an established current headcount.

Why AMD wanted Silo AI
AMD’s stated rationale was to gain talent and software capabilities that could help accelerate AI model development and deployment on its hardware and strengthen its enterprise AI offering. Silo AI’s experience training models on AMD platforms and integrating AI for large customers fit that goal: accelerator hardware is only one part of an AI system, alongside models, software, and the work needed to adapt them to customer environments.
In AMD’s August 12 completion announcement, Boppana said, “AI is our number one strategic priority, and we continue to invest in both the talent and software capabilities to support our growing customer deployments and roadmaps.” Su told TIME in September, “We really believe in end-to-end AI in every aspect.” These statements describe the company’s strategy; they are not independent measurements of the acquisition’s results.

Does the acquisition prove AMD can counter Nvidia?
No. The acquisition is evidence of AMD’s effort to improve its AI capabilities and competitive position, not proof that it secured a market-share gain, improved performance relative to Nvidia, or won customers because of the deal. AMD’s completion release refers to Nvidia’s dominance in the GPU market in its risk discussion, but neither that release nor AMD’s SEC filing quantifies a competitive effect caused by acquiring Silo AI. The supported conclusion is narrower: AMD acquired software and enterprise AI expertise it said would help customers use AMD hardware.
