Amazon said in April 2024 that larger U.S. Fresh stores would move to Dash Carts, and in 2026 announced plans to close its Fresh and Go stores. The enduring idea is compelling: for a quick trip, pick up what you need and leave, while the store handles payment and the receipt.
How does Amazon Fresh Just Walk Out work?
At a participating store, shoppers enter, choose products and leave without going through a conventional checkout. Amazon says its system uses computer vision, artificial intelligence and sensor inputs to associate products with a shopper’s visit. For some small products that are difficult to see, shelf-weight sensors can help detect when an item is taken. Amazon says it then provides a digital receipt after the visit. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its technology, not independently audited measures of its accuracy or performance. Amazon’s explanation of Just Walk Out
Why checkout-free shopping feels useful
It removes the checkout step
The clearest benefit is practical: shoppers can leave without waiting in a checkout line or scanning items one by one at a register. That can make the end of a short grocery run simpler, especially when the basket is small.
It does not prove every shopper saves time
When Amazon introduced the technology at a Fresh store, the company cited customer feedback about time savings and reduced contact. That is a report of customer reactions, not a measured time-saving result or evidence that all shoppers prefer checkout-free stores. Amazon executive Dilip Kumar described the experience as “effortless” in the company’s 2021 launch announcement; that statement, too, reflects Amazon’s account of customer response rather than a representative survey. What happened to Just Walk Out at Amazon Fresh?
In April 2024, Amazon said it would remove Just Walk Out from larger U.S. Amazon Fresh stores and introduce Dash Carts instead. The Associated Press independently reported the transition. Amazon said Dash Carts were a better fit for customers making larger weekly grocery trips, while Just Walk Out suited smaller-format stores. The AP report confirms the announcement; the customer-preference explanation remains Amazon’s account. Amazon’s 2024 Fresh update · Associated Press report, April 2, 2024
The trade-off is more than speed versus a cart. Amazon pointed to shoppers who wanted to avoid the checkout line but also see receipts and savings while shopping. A checkout-free design prioritizes leaving without a register interaction; a smart-cart approach can better accommodate shoppers who want information during the trip. The available sources establish that rationale, but do not establish that all Dash Cart functions or availability are the same at every store.

Just Walk Out vs. Dash Cart

|---|---|---|
| Trip and store fit, as Amazon described it in 2024 | Small-format stores and quicker trips | Larger weekly grocery trips |
| Checkout interaction | Leave without using a conventional checkout | Shop with a smart cart; Amazon’s sources describe this as the alternative for larger Fresh trips |
| Information during the trip | Amazon’s explanation describes a digital receipt after the visit | Amazon cited shoppers’ desire to view receipts and savings while shopping as a reason for the change |
| Availability | Only at participating locations; a current store-by-store list is not established here | Amazon announced the transition for larger U.S. Fresh stores in 2024; check a store’s current information for local availability |
The comparison is about the formats Amazon described, not a promise that either technology is available at a particular address. Check the named store’s current information before making a trip for a specific feature.
Why did Amazon replace Just Walk Out with Dash Carts?
Amazon’s explanation was that the technologies better serve different kinds of shopping. For a small basket and a quick visit, skipping checkout is the central convenience. For a larger weekly shop, Amazon said customers also wanted to see receipt details and savings as they went, making Dash Cart a better fit. This is a reason to treat Just Walk Out as one useful retail option, rather than a universal replacement for every checkout.

Is Just Walk Out still used?
Amazon’s 2026 company update said it would close Amazon Fresh and Go stores while continuing Just Walk Out deployments at third-party locations and in some company operations. Amazon reported use at more than 360 third-party locations in five countries and in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms. These are Amazon-reported deployment figures for 2026, not counts of Amazon Fresh stores or measures of customer outcomes. Amazon’s 2026 grocery-store update
So the technology’s continued use does not mean it remains a standard Amazon Fresh shopping feature. Availability depends on the participating location, and the sources do not provide a current store-by-store list.
