Airfares can keep rising even as airline profits fall because higher ticket prices do not necessarily cover a sudden increase in fuel and other costs. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecast that global airline revenue would grow 9.4% in 2026 while operating expenses grew 13%, leaving projected net profit at $23 billion, down from $45 billion in 2025. The figures are forecasts, not completed-year results.

Why higher fares do not guarantee higher profits

A ticket price is revenue for an airline; profit is what remains after paying operating costs and other expenses. If costs rise faster than revenue, the airline can charge more and still earn less. IATA’s June 2026 outlook put the forecast net margin at 2.0%, compared with 4.2% in 2025. In other words, its projected $23 billion in 2026 net profit was a thin return against the industry’s projected $1.165 trillion in revenue.

IATA expected passenger ticket yields to increase 7% in 2026 and passenger ticket revenue to reach $839 billion, up 9.2%. But passenger demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometers, was forecast to grow only 2.1%. Yield and ticket revenue are industry-wide measures; they do not mean every route or individual ticket will become more expensive by those percentages. IATA’s June 2026 outlook also projected 5.1 billion passengers and an 84.0% passenger load factor.

What changed in the 2026 airline-profit forecast

The outlook deteriorated sharply between IATA’s two forecasts. The December 2025 forecast anticipated $41 billion in 2026 net profit and a 3.9% margin. In June 2026, after a fuel-price shock and Middle East-related disruption, IATA projected $23 billion and a 2.0% margin. This is a revision in forecasts, not a comparison of two realized results.

Why airline costs can outrun fare increases

Fuel became a much larger forecast expense

IATA projected global airline fuel costs would rise from $252 billion in 2025 to $350 billion in 2026, accounting for 31.4% of operating expenses rather than 25.4%. Its June outlook assumed Brent crude would average $95 per barrel and jet fuel $152 per barrel, with jet fuel up almost 70% from the $90-per-barrel average in 2025. It also forecast an average jet-fuel crack spread—the difference between crude and refined jet fuel—of $57 per barrel.

Hedging can cushion some short-term price movements, but IATA said airlines had hedged roughly one third of expected 2026 fuel consumption. Many hedge crude rather than jet fuel, so a widening refining premium can still raise their costs. As IATA Director General Willie Walsh put it: “Airlines are bearing the brunt of the fuel price shock. While air fares are rising, airlines are still absorbing part of the hike in their bottom lines.”

Airlines cannot reprice tickets already sold

Carriers set schedules and capacity months ahead and sell seats well before departure. When fuel prices jump, an airline cannot change the price of a ticket that a customer has already bought. The Associated Press reported that about 35% of United’s tickets for the final three months of 2026 had been booked by the time the renewed fuel-price rise hit. United CFO Mike Leskinen said those fares could not be raised retroactively and that recovering the added cost would not be immediate. AP’s report on fares and fuel prices describes the timing problem.

Fuel is not the only expense

IATA also pointed to labor, aircraft leases, maintenance, and other non-fuel costs. Aircraft delivery shortfalls can keep older planes flying longer; older aircraft may require more maintenance and consume more fuel than newer, more efficient planes. That can delay or reduce the savings airlines expected from fleet upgrades. The scale of the impact differs by airline: route mix, financial resilience, hedging, and the ability to change schedules all affect how much of a cost increase a carrier can absorb or pass on. IATA’s June 2026 comments on industry pressures discuss the disruption and aircraft constraints.

There is a limit to what travelers will pay

Higher fares can help recover costs, but they may also put pressure on demand if travelers decide a trip is no longer affordable. Walsh said the open question was how long travelers and shippers would tolerate higher connectivity costs. If prices suppress travel, carriers may have less scope to pass through further increases.

What recent U.S. fare figures show—and what they do not

U.S. fare statistics illustrate why a fall in fuel prices does not automatically show up as a cheaper ticket. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ average fare, excluding optional fees, as reported by AP, rose from $405 in 2025’s fourth quarter to $428 in 2026’s first quarter and $436 in the second quarter. These are U.S. averages, not global fares, and they do not include optional fees.

AP reported that the Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index fell from an early-April 2026 peak of $4.88 per gallon to a June low of $2.70, while fares remained elevated; fuel then rose again. The same report said U.S. airfares in August 2026 were 23% higher year over year, citing the Labor Department. Hopper estimated, in the week before AP’s report, that round-trip domestic Thanksgiving fares were $402 and Christmas fares $452—31% and 23% above the prior year, respectively. Those holiday figures are fare-search estimates for the period reported, not government averages or guaranteed prices for every itinerary.

Fuel and fares are measured differently and move on different timelines. A fuel-price reading is not the cost of fuel already bought or hedged by a particular airline, while a fare average does not isolate fuel as the cause of a price change. Ticket prices also vary by route, travel date, demand, and the time of purchase. Brett House, an economist at Columbia Business School, told AP: “It’s not just the level of fuel costs that is a problem or a challenge for airlines. It’s also the volatility.”

Will airfares come down if jet fuel gets cheaper?

They might, but a decline is not automatic or immediate. Airlines need time to sell seats at new prices, and the fuel cost reflected in their finances depends on when fuel was purchased, hedges, refining premiums, and other expenses. Stephen Treanor, a finance professor at California State University, Chico, told AP that jet fuel prices need to fall and stay down for airfares to decline on a sustained basis. That is expert commentary, not a guarantee for every route or carrier.

For a traveler deciding whether to book, an industry profit forecast cannot predict the price of a specific flight. Compare the same route and dates across airlines, check the full price including optional fees, and consider whether the ticket’s change or cancellation terms fit your plans. A cheaper fuel headline alone is not enough to establish that a particular fare will fall.
