Air purifiers use fans to pull or push room air through a filter or other cleaning medium. The fan moves the air; the cleaning medium captures particles or targets certain gases. How much clean air the complete unit delivers depends on both airflow and how effectively it removes the pollutant—not just on the filter’s efficiency.
What the fan does—and what the filter does
A portable air purifier circulates room air through one or more cleaning devices. The fan supplies airflow, carrying pollutants to the cleaning medium; the medium does the removal. For particle filtration, the amount of clean air delivered therefore depends on the volume of air passing through the unit and the device’s removal efficiency for those particles. A highly efficient filter alone does not show how much clean air the full purifier provides.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts the speed tradeoff plainly: “More air will pass through the filter at higher fan speeds, so typically filtration will be greater at higher fan speeds.” Longer operation also increases filtration. Higher speeds can mean more noise and more noticeable air movement, so a setting you can tolerate and leave running may be more useful than maximum speed used only briefly. How airflow and removal efficiency relate to CADR
Clean air delivery rate (CADR) is a useful way to compare a purifier’s delivery of filtered air for particles. EPA’s technical summary describes CADR as the product of a pollutant’s fractional removal efficiency and the airflow through the cleaner. In practical terms, a unit needs both adequate airflow and effective particle removal to deliver a strong particle CADR.

CADR is pollutant-specific: common ratings address smoke, dust, and pollen. EPA says CADR is for particles, so it cannot be used to compare how well units remove gases. A unit intended to address gases needs a gas-targeted medium, such as activated carbon. EPA notes that carbon can be effective when a large amount of material is present, but there are no widely used performance rating systems for gas-removing portable filters. Choose particle CADR for the room
For an initial particle-cleaning estimate, EPA’s consumer guide gives the following CADR values for rooms with an 8-foot ceiling. They are estimates, not a universal performance guarantee; a higher ceiling may call for a higher CADR.

These figures come from the EPA consumer guide, which does not state a publication year in the reviewed material. For a smoke-cleaner room during wildfire conditions, EPA separately advises a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. That threshold belongs to this specific cleaner-air-room guidance; it is not a replacement for the consumer-guide estimates in every situation. What to check when comparing purifiers
- Room size and ceiling height: Match particle CADR to the area you want to clean, accounting for ceilings higher than 8 feet.
- Pollutant: Compare the relevant particle rating—smoke, dust, or pollen—when particle removal is the goal. For gases, look for a gas-targeted medium rather than relying on CADR.
- Usable fan speed: Consider noise and air movement at the speed you expect to run. A high rating is less helpful if the necessary setting is too disruptive to use consistently.
- Air path and filter condition: Keep the intake and outlet clear of curtains and other obstructions. Dirty or overloaded filters do not work well; follow the model’s instructions for replacement, since there is no single replacement interval established for all purifiers.
EPA does not certify or recommend specific purifier brands or models, and no air cleaner or filter eliminates all indoor pollutants. Match a unit’s claims and ratings to the pollutant you want to address. EPA consumer guide

Can you make a fan-and-filter cleaner?
EPA describes a DIY fan-and-filter cleaner as a possible option. Its guidance recommends using a high-efficiency filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, that is approximately the same shape and size as the fan. Align the filter’s arrows with the direction of airflow and make a good seal so air does not bypass the filter.
CADR is typically not known for a DIY cleaner, so do not assume an untested build delivers the same clean-air rate as a CADR-rated product. EPA: DIY Air Cleaners
