That can tighten supply and raise costs for the different kinds of memory used in phones. The effect varies by manufacturer, model, and market; it does not mean every phone will rise in price or go out of stock.
How data-center demand reaches the phone market
AI servers need high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM, and enterprise solid-state storage. Phone makers generally use different products: mobile DRAM, often LPDDR, for working memory, and NAND flash for persistent storage. These parts are not interchangeable with the memory in an AI accelerator. The connection is upstream: manufacturers share production resources, investment decisions, and supply chains across memory markets. When suppliers direct more capacity toward data-center products, less capacity or investment may be available for other memory products, tightening supply and contributing to higher prices. IDC describes the capacity and investment shift; Micron’s product disclosures illustrate the distinction between HBM/server offerings and LPDDR products for smartphone customers.
Working memory and storage are different
- Mobile DRAM is the phone’s short-term working memory. Its amount is commonly listed as RAM.
- NAND flash is persistent storage for apps, photos, downloads, and the operating system. Its capacity is usually listed in gigabytes of storage.
A shortage or price increase affecting one category does not automatically mean the other is equally constrained. The products, inventories, and purchasing decisions differ.
What the latest cited market outlook says
In a September 30, 2026 update, TrendForce said mobile DRAM allocations remained tight, costs were rising, and depletion of low-cost inventories continued to weigh on smartphone production. It expected mobile DRAM prices to keep trending upward, but at a slower pace in the fourth quarter of 2026 after larger earlier increases. TrendForce also said smartphone brands were relying on existing eMMC/UFS storage inventories in 4Q26, limiting additional procurement.

TrendForce forecast conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. These are forecasts for memory contracts between suppliers and buyers, not forecasts that retail smartphone prices will rise by the same percentages. Retail prices also depend on product design, inventory, competition, currency, distribution, and each brand’s pricing decisions.
In February 2026, IDC forecast a 12.9% decline in global smartphone shipments in 2026, followed by 1.9% growth in 2027, and said memory-supply challenges could persist throughout 2026 and likely well into 2027. Those figures are IDC’s forecasts at that date, not final shipment results. IDC’s 2025 outlook also estimated memory supply growth of 16% year over year for DRAM and 17% for NAND, rates it described as below historical norms; those, too, were estimates rather than confirmed final results.

What phone makers may do when memory costs rise
Higher component costs do not have just one outcome. A manufacturer may pass some of the cost to buyers, accept a smaller margin, change the amount of RAM or storage in a configuration, or delay or reduce production. IDC has described these as possible responses, not actions that every manufacturer will take.
Keep the price but change the configuration
IDC’s February 2026 analysis gave the example of a phone that might move from 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage to 8 GB and 128 GB at the same price or a higher one. That is an illustration of a possible response to constrained supply and cost pressure, not a report that a particular model has changed. Compare the exact memory and storage configuration when checking prices across years or retailers.

Raise prices, absorb costs, or constrain supply
A brand with room in its margins may absorb some additional cost; another may raise a handset’s price or limit production. Availability can also be affected by component allocations and the use of existing inventory. These decisions differ by company and product, so a market-wide memory squeeze does not establish that a particular phone is unavailable or overpriced.
Why lower-cost phones and smaller vendors may feel more pressure
IDC estimates that memory accounts for about 15–20% of the bill of materials for a mid-range smartphone and around 10–15% for a high-end flagship. Those are market-level estimates, not figures for every device. A large component cost can be harder to absorb in lower-priced phones, where margins are thinner. IDC says lower-end vendors are therefore more exposed to higher memory costs.

Purchasing power matters as well. Companies able to make large commitments and maintain strong supplier relationships may secure allocations more reliably. This can leave smaller or less powerful buyers with less flexibility when supply is tight. It does not mean every budget phone will be affected more than every flagship: exact exposure depends on a manufacturer’s contracts, inventory, design, and product strategy.

- Compare like-for-like configurations and confirm whether other specifications or included items differ.
