Switch the vacuum off and unplug it before inspecting it. A useful first test is to remove the hose and check suction at the machine’s inlet: strong suction there points to the hose or an accessory; weak suction there points to the filter, tank, float, seals, or an internal fault.
Start with safety
Turn the vacuum off and disconnect its plug before opening the unit, removing the filter, or checking the tank and seals. Shop-Vac’s manual specifically directs owners to switch off and unplug the vacuum before doing any work on it: Shop-Vac owner’s manual. Do not reach into moving parts or open the motor housing for routine troubleshooting.
If you notice smoke, sparking with an electrical smell, a burning odor, or a damaged power cord, stop using the vac, unplug it if safe to do so, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. RIDGID’s Canada troubleshooting guidance treats these as service issues rather than ordinary airflow checks: RIDGID troubleshooting.
Check for a full tank or a blocked airflow path
Empty a full tank before testing again. Then disconnect the hose and inspect the hose, wand, nozzle, and tank inlet for debris. A blockage in any of these parts can restrict airflow even if the motor runs normally. BISSELL recommends separating hose and wand sections to clear debris on its model 2035 support page; use a method suitable for your hose and do not force a sharp object through flexible tubing: BISSELL model 2035 support. Kärcher also lists the nozzle, suction pipe, and hose as parts of the airflow path to clean when performance drops: Kärcher US FAQ.

Use the inlet test to narrow down the cause
With the hose removed, briefly turn the vacuum on and check whether it draws air at the tank inlet. Keep hands and loose objects clear of the opening. Shop-Vac recommends this check to distinguish a hose or accessory problem from a problem at the vacuum itself: Shop-Vac suction FAQ.
- Suction is strong at the inlet: Inspect the hose, wand, nozzle, and their connections for a clog, hole, crack, or loose fitting. Clear an obstruction; replace a damaged hose with a compatible one.
- Suction is weak or absent at the inlet: Switch the vac off and unplug it. Check the filter, tank, float, lid seating, and seals. If those checks do not explain the problem, arrange manufacturer or authorized service.
Inspect the filter and fit it for the job
A dirty or clogged filter can reduce suction. A saturated filter may also impair dry pickup, while a torn, damaged, missing, or incorrectly installed filter can compromise performance. Clean or replace it as the manual for your exact model directs; filter designs and wet-pickup arrangements differ by vacuum. Shop-Vac’s manual connects clogged filters with weak suction and saturated filters with misting, and advises cleaning or replacement as applicable: Shop-Vac owner’s manual.

Do not assume that a filter or bag setup works across all wet/dry vacs. For example, the cited BISSELL 2035 instructions call for both its fabric and mesh filters during wet and dry cleaning, and say washed filters must air-dry completely for 24–48 hours before reinstallation. That interval applies to this model’s instructions, not every vacuum: BISSELL model 2035 support. For fine dry dust, some models support or recommend a collection/filter bag; check the manual before using one. Shop-Vac notes bag use depends on vac type and debris, and Kärcher recommends a filter bag for fine dust: Shop-Vac suction FAQ, Kärcher US FAQ.
Check the float, lid, and seals
If suction stops while picking up liquid, the tank may be full and the float may have risen to close airflow. Empty the tank. Inspect or reposition the float only as the model’s manual permits; do not force it. BISSELL, RIDGID, and Kärcher all identify the full container or float as a possible cause of interrupted wet pickup: BISSELL model 2035 support, RIDGID troubleshooting, Kärcher US FAQ.

Make sure the powerhead or lid is seated evenly, the hose connection is secure, and the drain cap is tightened. A loose connection or poor seal lets air leak into the system and reduces pickup. If suction remains low, look for cracks in the tank or damage around its rim. Replace a filter if it is torn or damaged, or remains clogged after cleaning as directed. Replace a hose only if it has a hole, crack, or tear—not simply because suction is weak. Before ordering, match the replacement to the exact vacuum model, hose diameter, and end fittings. A worn seal may also need a model-compatible replacement if the unit no longer closes tightly: Shop-Vac suction FAQ, RIDGID troubleshooting, Kärcher US FAQ.

If suction is still weak at the inlet after the user-serviceable checks, or the symptoms suggest a motor, fan, switch, or other electrical fault, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not improvise repairs inside the motor housing: RIDGID troubleshooting, Powr-Flite owner’s manual.
