A Mac can recognize a Thunderbolt connection or enclosure without detecting—or supporting—the PCIe card installed inside it. Check the connection and enclosure first, then use System Information to identify which layer is missing. If the enclosure appears but the card does not, verify the card’s seating, power, driver, and compatibility with the exact Mac, macOS version, and enclosure.
Why your Mac may see the enclosure but not its PCIe card
A Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure carries a PCIe connection to the Mac, but that does not guarantee that macOS will enumerate every card or provide the software support it needs. The enclosure link and the card inside it are separate things to check. Apple explains that common controllers and standard interfaces may use built-in drivers, while proprietary card features may require a custom driver. See Apple’s PCIe driver guidance.
Compatibility depends on the combination of card model and revision, enclosure generation, Mac model and chip family, macOS version, and driver or firmware. A generic “Thunderbolt compatible” label is not enough to establish that a particular card will work. For example, Sonnet’s compatibility chart lists model-specific support and cautions that third-party testing does not guarantee every card. Its Allegro support examples apply to the listed cards, operating systems, and chassis generations—not to PCIe cards generally.
Check whether the Mac is blocking the Thunderbolt accessory
On Apple silicon Mac laptops, a newly attached or unknown Thunderbolt accessory may require approval before it connects. Unlock the Mac and accept the accessory prompt. If you selected “Don’t Allow” earlier, reconnect the enclosure and approve it when prompted. Apple documents the relevant control under System Settings > Privacy & Security. The available choices can depend on the Mac and its security settings; see Apple’s guidance on allowing accessories to connect.

Test the enclosure’s power and direct connection
- Check power. Confirm the enclosure is switched on and connected to its required power source. Check that its cables are firmly seated.
- Use a suitable Thunderbolt cable. The cable must support Thunderbolt and the enclosure’s connection requirements; a USB-C connector alone does not establish that a cable supports Thunderbolt.
- Connect directly to the Mac. Remove docks and daisy-chained devices for this test, then connect the enclosure directly to a Mac Thunderbolt port.
- Restart the app that uses the card. If the hardware appears but an application cannot use it, close and reopen that application. A restart may also help after checking the physical connection and required software or firmware.
These are Apple’s recommended initial checks for a connected device; consult Apple’s Thunderbolt or USB device troubleshooting steps.
Use System Information to find the missing layer
System Information helps distinguish a missing Thunderbolt connection from a card that is not appearing behind a recognized enclosure. To open it, hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Check the Thunderbolt hardware entry for the enclosure or link, then check the PCI section for the card or endpoint where applicable.

- Add Connectivity & Unlock Performance: Expand your computer with a high-performance PCIe card over Thunderbolt 5. Ideal external PCIe expansion for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems.
- Thunderbolt 5 to PCIe Expansion: Delivers up to 6000 MB/s bi-directional PCIe bandwidth for pro audio, video, storage, and networking cards.
- Wide PCIe 4.0 Card Compatibility: Supports half-length+ (7.75"), full-height, single-width PCIe 4.0 x8 cards—plus most cards that require a daughter card.
- Pro-Level Power & Connectivity: Includes auxiliary PCIe power for power-hungry cards. Second Thunderbolt port enables daisy-chaining and provides 15W to connected peripherals.
- Compact, Quiet & Rugged Build: Lightweight aluminum enclosure with temperature-controlled, variable-speed fan for extremely quiet cooling; perfect for desktops, studios, and on-set workflows.
- Neither the enclosure nor the card appears: Focus first on accessory approval, the Mac port, cable, enclosure power, and a possible enclosure fault.
- The enclosure appears but the card does not: Check that the card is seated correctly, has any required auxiliary power, and is supported by the enclosure and Mac.
- The card appears but an app cannot use it: Check the card maker’s driver and firmware instructions, macOS compatibility, and the application’s own support requirements.
Apple recommends checking whether connected hardware appears in System Information. Its device troubleshooting guidance covers the check; its developer documentation explains the PCIe relationship.
Check the card’s seating, power, fit, and cooling
With the enclosure powered down as directed by its manufacturer, check that the card is fully seated in the correct slot. Follow the manuals for the enclosure and card to verify slot format, physical dimensions, cooling, and any auxiliary power connectors. Some cards need power beyond what the PCIe slot supplies. Requirements vary by model, so do not assume a card is powered correctly just because the enclosure turns on.

- Thunderbolt 3/4 PCIe Expansion Chassis: Instantly add a PCIe 3.0 x4 card (up to 145mm length) to any Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 enabled laptop. This chassis provides 40Gbps bandwidth for video capture, 10GbE, or NVMe SSDs.
- Pro-Grade Card Compatible: Designed for demanding workflows. Ideal for video capture (Blackmagic DeckLink series), audio processing cards, high-speed 10GbE Ethernet, or expanding storage with an NVMe SSD adapter card.
- Silent, All-Aluminum Design: The rugged aluminum chassis acts as a heatsink for 100% passive, 0dB cooling. Its silent operation is perfect for noise-sensitive environments like recording studios and editing bays.
- Full-Featured I/O Hub: The dock itself is driverless (plug-and-play) on macOS, Windows & Linux. Features a dedicated DP 1.4 port for an external monitor and a second TB port for daisy-chaining other devices.
- Dual Thunderbolt Ports with 15W PD: Features two Thunderbolt 3/4 ports (40Gbps) for high-speed data. Both ports provide 15W Power Delivery to power accessories or top-off devices, while the chassis provides 30W of power to the installed PCIe card.
Bandwidth can also constrain some PCIe cards over Thunderbolt. A connection can be present while a card’s performance or operation is limited by the link and chassis design. Check the card and enclosure documentation for the supported configuration and expected bandwidth; do not treat bandwidth as the explanation for a card that is absent from System Information without further evidence.
Verify driver and compatibility support for the exact combination
Check the card manufacturer’s current driver and compatibility notes for the exact card model and revision, macOS version, and Mac architecture. Some standard interfaces may work with drivers built into macOS; proprietary features may require a vendor driver. Apple describes custom PCIe driver support through DriverKit on macOS 11 and later, but that does not mean every card has a compatible driver. Confirm support with the card maker rather than assuming the enclosure provides it.

- Dual PCIe Expansion: Add two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots to your Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB4 enabled laptop/desktop for versatile card expansion.
- High-Speed Connection: Utilize the 40Gbps Thunderbolt interface for connecting video capture cards, network adapters, NVMe storage, and more.
- Silent & Compact: Features a durable, all-aluminum design with passive cooling for silent operation. Supports cards up to 205mm x 25mm x 145mm.

Then check the enclosure manufacturer’s compatibility information for that card, enclosure generation, Mac, and macOS version. Vendor charts are useful but specific to the products and configurations they list. The dated Allegro examples in Sonnet’s compatibility document should not be taken as a statement about other cards or newer operating systems.
