A process that exits with code 0 reported success at its own process boundary; that does not prove the larger script, pipeline, container, or user-facing task succeeded. To find the mismatch, identify which layer returned the code, trace whether failures were propagated, and verify the intended result separately.

What does exit code 0 actually mean?

In Bash, zero conventionally means success and a nonzero status means failure. The status is the command’s report to its caller—not an independent check that the work produced the right result. A command can complete normally while generating the wrong output, skipping a required side effect, or failing a larger goal the command does not know about. See the Bash manual’s explanation of exit status.

This distinction answers questions such as “Why does my program exit with code 0 but still fail?” and “Why is my script failing but returning exit code 0?” First establish what the zero belongs to: an individual command, a pipeline, a script, a CI step, or a container. Then check the outcome at the level where the failure is visible.

Why does false | true return 0 in Bash?

By default, Bash gives a pipeline the status of its last command. In false | true, false fails, but true is last and succeeds, so the pipeline status is 0. Bash’s pipeline rules describe this behavior.

With Bash’s set -o pipefail option enabled, a pipeline instead returns the status of its rightmost command that exited nonzero; if all commands succeed, the pipeline returns 0. For false | true, that makes the pipeline nonzero.

set -o pipefail
false | true
printf 'pipeline status: %sn' "$?"

$? reports the most recently completed command’s status, so in this example it captures the pipeline result only because printf has not run yet. If you need the status of each Bash pipeline component, save PIPESTATUS immediately after the pipeline: another command can overwrite it.

false | true
status=(${PIPESTATUS[@]})
printf 'first: %s, second: %sn' "${status[0]}" "${status[1]}"

pipefail changes the reported pipeline status; it does not verify that the pipeline’s output is correct. Choose it when your intended policy is for a failure in any component to make the pipeline fail. POSIX.1-2024 also specifies the last-command rule for pipeline status when ! is not used, but shell options and details can differ. Check the documentation for the shell that actually runs your script: The Open Group Shell Command Language.

How can a script or CI step hide a failure?

A wrapper’s returned status depends on what it runs and what it returns to its caller. An earlier failure may go unnoticed if the script continues, deliberately handles the error without returning failure, or runs a successful command afterward that becomes its final status. This is a diagnostic possibility, not a claim that every wrapper behaves that way.

  1. Identify the status boundary. Find the exact command or script whose exit status the CI runner or parent process records.
  2. Trace the command chain. Check whether a later command replaced the earlier status, whether the failure occurred inside a pipeline, or whether the script intentionally handled the error.
  3. Inspect pipeline behavior. In Bash, determine whether the default last-command rule masked a failed component. Use set -o pipefail if that matches the desired policy, and capture PIPESTATUS immediately when you need component-level results.
  4. Verify the deliverable. Check the expected file, test report, deployed revision, or other observable result rather than treating a zero from the process as proof it exists.

set -e alone is not a universal fix: it has exceptions, and it does not replace understanding pipeline status. Use shell options deliberately, then test both error propagation and the result your automation is meant to produce.

How can a Kubernetes container exit 0 while the job still fails?

A container’s exit status describes its process termination. Kubernetes also tracks separate operational conditions, and a process returning zero does not establish an application-specific outcome such as a successful deployment or a service ready to accept traffic. The Kubernetes Pod lifecycle documentation distinguishes Pod-level summaries from per-container state.

Check the container’s termination details

A container in the Terminated state exposes a reason, exit code, and start and finish times. Inspect those fields to establish what ended and when; do not treat the Pod phase alone as a complete account of every container’s state.

Understand restart policy separately

For a terminated container, Always restarts it regardless of exit status, OnFailure restarts it only after a nonzero exit, and Never does not automatically restart it. A batch process that exits 0 can therefore be considered complete under its restart policy even when a higher-level expectation was not met. Kubernetes cannot infer a task-specific success condition from the exit code alone.

Separate process status from health probes

Liveness and readiness probes answer different questions from process exit status. A liveness probe can detect a deadlocked process and trigger a restart. A readiness probe determines whether a container is ready to accept traffic; when it fails, Kubernetes removes the Pod IP from matching Service EndpointSlices. A running process can therefore be unready, while a clean process exit does not certify that an application-level task succeeded.

Inspect logs, events, and the reported symptom

For application troubleshooting, Kubernetes recommends inspecting container logs and Pod details. Start with:

kubectl logs <pod>
kubectl describe pod <pod>

Compare the logs and events with the container’s termination details. If the reported failure is that traffic cannot reach the application, examine readiness; if a process appears stuck, examine liveness. The Kubernetes application troubleshooting guide covers these diagnostic commands.

Which layer should you inspect first?

Context Status that can mislead What to inspect Why
Bash pipeline or script A pipeline may report only its last command’s status by default; a wrapper may return a later command’s success. Pipeline components, status propagation, and the intended output. Bash’s default pipeline rule uses the last command; pipefail uses the rightmost nonzero status. Bash pipeline rules.
Kubernetes container or workload A container’s exit code does not establish readiness or an application-level outcome. Termination reason, code and times; logs and events; readiness and liveness behavior. Kubernetes records per-container termination details and treats restart policy and probes as separate mechanisms. Pod lifecycle; application troubleshooting.

A practical checklist for a zero-code failure

  1. Write down which process or step returned zero and what larger operation is considered unsuccessful.
  2. Reproduce the command chain directly and inspect individual pipeline statuses where relevant.
  3. For Bash, check whether a pipeline’s last-command status masked an earlier failure; enable pipefail only if that is the failure policy you want.
  4. Trace wrapper logic for ignored errors, deliberate error handling, or a later successful command that becomes the final status.
  5. For Kubernetes, inspect container termination fields, logs, and Pod events; check readiness for traffic availability and liveness for suspected deadlocks.
  6. Define success in observable terms and verify that result independently of process completion.
