If a portable carpet cleaner is barely picking up dirty water, first check the recovery tank: it may be full or not seated correctly. A clogged tank filter, accessible debris, or a loose hose or seal can also interrupt recovery. Turn the machine off and unplug it before checking removable parts, and follow the directions for your exact model; tank and hose layouts differ between cleaners.
Start with the recovery tank
Empty the dirty-water tank, then check that it is installed and secured as the manual describes. A full tank can stop recovery, while a tank that is not seated properly may disrupt the pickup path or seal. Before reinstalling it, remove visible debris from the seating area if your manual permits. BISSELL identifies debris beneath the tank as a possible seating issue on certain Little Green HydroSteam models; that detail should not be assumed to apply to every cleaner. Rug Doctor and BISSELL both include tank checks in their troubleshooting guidance.
Inspect the dirty-water filter and accessible debris
Check the filter or screen associated with the recovery tank. A clogged screen can restrict suction. Clean it only as the instructions for your model specify; the sources do not establish one cleaning method that is safe for every filter. Also look for visible debris in the tool or other accessible parts of the recovery path, removing it only where the manual allows.
For BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam models 3532, 3618, 3605, 3605F, and 3606, the support instructions specifically direct users to remove and clean the red filter. That model-specific instruction is not a universal procedure for other BISSELL cleaners or other brands. Check hose and seal connections only if your model allows
If the tank and filter are clear, inspect accessible hose and seal connections against your manual. A connector that is not fully engaged or a seal that is out of position can affect recovery. Do not dismantle the machine or assume another model has the same parts.
Rug Doctor UK’s rental-machine guide describes checking that the dome filter is connected, the black rubber tank seal sits flush, and the grey hose connector is snapped into place. Use only the suction test specified for your cleaner
Some manufacturers prescribe a test after cleaning the filter; the location and method are model-specific. BISSELL instructs owners of the listed HydroSteam models to check suction at the red filter. Rug Doctor UK’s guide describes checking suction at the grey hose and at the front pickup on its rental machine. Do not transfer either test to a different design, and keep hands away from moving parts or openings unless your manual explicitly directs the check.
When to contact support or return a rental
If tank, filter, and permitted connection checks do not restore suction, stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or rental provider. BISSELL directs users with unresolved suction issues to support. Rug Doctor UK advises returning its rental machine to the store if suction is absent at both the hose and front pickup. The cited guidance does not establish a universal internal repair procedure, so do not open the motor or attempt an unsupported repair.

If you need a replacement filter
Cleaning the existing filter is the first step when the model’s instructions permit it. If it is damaged or replacement is directed, match the part to the cleaner’s exact model number. A search for “portable carpet cleaner replacement filter” may surface options, but that phrase does not indicate compatibility across brands or models; confirm the part against the manufacturer’s documentation before ordering.
