A game can fail to launch on a Windows on Arm PC even when Windows can emulate its x86 or x64 game files. Emulation does not provide every component a game needs: an unsupported anti-cheat system or other driver can block it. The cause is game-specific, so check the publisher’s current compatibility guidance before changing settings or reinstalling software.
Why games may not launch on Windows on Arm
Emulation helps, but does not guarantee compatibility
Windows on Arm can run many applications built for x86 and x64 processors through emulation. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulation improvements, and Microsoft describes support for x86 Win32 and x64 emulation. That can expand the range of software that runs, but it does not guarantee that every game, graphics path, driver, or anti-cheat component will work. Anti-cheat and other drivers can be the blocker
One common platform-level concern is a game’s anti-cheat driver. Microsoft warns that some games and apps may not work if they rely on anti-cheat drivers that were not made for Windows 11 Arm PCs. The game itself may be emulated while a required driver is not available for Arm. Emulation cannot make an unsupported driver compatible. Check the publisher’s guidance rather than trying to disable anti-cheat or install an unofficial driver. Microsoft recommends checking with the game publisher.
What to check before troubleshooting
Write down the exact game and launcher, your PC model or processor, Windows version and build, when the launch fails, and the full error message. Those details help distinguish a general app problem from a game-specific Arm incompatibility. Without them, there is no reliable way to determine whether a particular title will run.

Check the game publisher’s support site for terms such as “Windows on Arm,” “ARM64,” “anti-cheat,” and the exact error text. Microsoft also points readers to Works on WoA, a crowdsourced compatibility resource. Treat community reports as clues, not as an official guarantee from the publisher; compatibility may change as games, drivers, and Windows builds are updated.
How to troubleshoot a game that will not launch
- Update Windows, then restart. Install available Windows updates and restart the PC before testing again. Microsoft advises keeping Arm-based Surface devices up to date, and its general app troubleshooting guidance includes restarting. Surface update guidance
- Check the game’s current Arm and anti-cheat support. Look for guidance from the game publisher and compare it with the exact error. Works on WoA can provide an additional community-reported data point, but does not replace publisher confirmation.
- Determine whether a driver or anti-cheat component is involved. If the game reports an anti-cheat or driver failure—or the publisher says that component is unsupported on Windows on Arm—a local repair is unlikely to solve the underlying incompatibility. Ask the publisher whether an update is planned or supported.
- Try Windows app repair if the game is installed as a desktop app and the option is available. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the game, choose Advanced options if shown, then select Repair. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, Reset may be offered. Reset can remove app data, so check the publisher’s instructions for saves and account data first. Microsoft’s app repair guidance
- Contact the publisher if the game should be supported but still fails. Provide the exact error, Windows build, PC model or processor, launcher, and steps already tried. The publisher is best placed to confirm whether its game and required components support Windows on Arm.
What not to try
- Do not disable anti-cheat or try to bypass a game’s security checks.
- Do not install unsigned or unofficial drivers to force a game to start.
- Do not assume a generic driver-updater tool can supply a missing Arm-compatible game driver.
- Do not buy hardware or repair software as a presumed fix before identifying the cause; a platform incompatibility cannot be corrected by an unrelated accessory or utility.
If the game is not supported
If the publisher confirms that a required component does not support Windows on Arm, the practical choices depend on the title: wait for publisher support, play a game confirmed to work, or investigate cloud gaming only if a service offers that exact game in your region and supports your device. Cloud gaming availability varies, so it is not a guaranteed workaround.
