If your dash cam footage is missing or will not play, first work out which problem you have: the camera may not have recorded, the clip may be on the memory card but missing from the app, or the saved file may be damaged or incompatible with your player. Check recording and power, search the card and its timestamps, then inspect the card and software. Copy any footage you need before formatting or replacing the card.
Start by identifying what is wrong
Use the symptom to choose your first check. A dash cam can stop recording, an app can fail to display footage that is still on the card, or a recording can exist but fail to play. These are different problems, so do not format the card until you have checked whether it contains clips you want to keep.
| What you notice | First check |
|---|---|
| No new footage | Confirm the camera has power and recording is active; then check the card. |
| Footage is missing from the phone app | Check the card directly on a computer and search nearby dates or times. |
| A saved clip will not play | Copy it to a computer and try the camera maker’s recommended player or another compatible video player. |
If the camera is not recording
Confirm power and recording status
Check that the camera is powered and look for its recording indicator or recording status in the app. A camera may be on without actively recording, so do not rely on the power light alone.
Some models suspend recording in particular modes. Garmin says certain Dash Cam Mini states—including connection to a computer, Gallery, Live Video, and app sharing mode—prevent recording on the model covered by its guidance. Exit those modes and check the model’s instructions; do not assume the same behavior applies to every dash cam. See Garmin’s Dash Cam Mini troubleshooting guidance.

Check the memory card
A card that is unsupported, poorly seated, corrupted, or failing can cause recording errors, gaps, missing footage, or files that will not play. Turn the camera off as directed by its manufacturer, remove and reseat the card, then verify the card’s type and capacity against the exact camera model’s requirements.
Requirements vary by model. For example, Garmin specifies microSD or microSDHC, Class 10 or higher, and a maximum capacity of 64 GB for the dēzlCam 785 and Camper/RV 785. Those limits are not universal; check Garmin’s guidance for those models or the documentation for your own camera before buying a replacement.

Update device software and the app
If power and card checks do not resolve the issue, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to update the camera’s firmware and, when relevant, its phone app. Garmin includes software and app updates among its checks for the Dash Cam Mini, while its dēzlCam 785 and Camper/RV 785 guidance also recommends updating device software. Use the instructions for your model rather than applying another manufacturer’s procedure.
If footage is missing from the app
Check the card directly
An app connection problem can hide footage from the gallery without proving that the camera failed to record. If practical, remove the card and inspect it on a computer using the manufacturer’s recommended method. Garmin specifically advises checking the card on a computer when connectivity problems may affect Dash Cam Mini gallery visibility.

Search around the expected date and time
A clip may appear under an unexpected timestamp if the camera’s clock is wrong. Garmin’s Mini 2 and Mini 3 guidance also identifies low battery and infrequent app connection as possible reasons footage appears under an earlier date or time. Check nearby dates and times, then correct the clock and connection according to the camera’s instructions: Garmin’s Mini 2 and Mini 3 guidance.

If other clips play but one does not, the affected recording may be incomplete or corrupted. Rexing lists a possible write-header error after sudden battery failure among its troubleshooting explanations for playback problems; that is a possibility in its guidance, not a diagnosis that applies to every camera. See Rexing’s troubleshooting page. If the clip fails in multiple compatible players, keep the original file and check the camera maker’s model-specific support before attempting repairs.
Back up footage before formatting or replacing the card
Formatting can erase recordings. Copy any clips you want to preserve to another location first, then format the card using the camera maker’s procedure. Follow the model’s stated card type, capacity, format, and firmware requirements; a procedure or specification for one brand or model may not suit another.
VIOFO describes loop recording as continuous writing and overwriting and recommends formatting its cards at least monthly. That interval is VIOFO’s recommendation for its own product line, not an established industry-wide schedule. Its guidance also links prolonged lack of formatting with card errors, recording failures, gaps, and corrupted or unplayable files: VIOFO’s card-formatting instructions.
If the problem continues
- Save wanted recordings somewhere other than the card.
- Confirm the camera is powered, recording is active, and no model-specific mode is suspending recording.
- Check card seating and exact-model compatibility; format only after backing up clips and following the maker’s instructions.
- Install relevant camera and app updates using the manufacturer’s official procedure.
- If the maker recommends it, test with a known-compatible card and the original power supply or cable.
- If recording or playback still fails, contact the manufacturer with the camera model, card details, any error message, and whether the issue affects all clips or only one.
Power, loop-recording settings, card suitability, and firmware are among the checks Rexing lists for recording trouble. A failure that persists after the appropriate model-specific checks needs model-specific support rather than a guess about which component has failed.
