What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Most Bluetooth pairing problems come down to one of four things: the accessory is not in discovery mode, it is out of power or range, an old pairing is getting in the way, or a setup prompt or compatibility requirement has been missed. Start with the symptom below, and use the accessory’s model-specific instructions—turning it on alone may not make it discoverable.
First, tell pairing from reconnecting
People often use “pair” and “connect” interchangeably, but they describe different steps. Pairing establishes a relationship between the phone and accessory; connecting is what a previously paired device does when it reconnects. A gadget that never appears in the available-device list needs different checks from one that was saved before but will not reconnect.
If the gadget does not appear in the device list
- Check power and proximity. Charge the accessory or replace its batteries, switch it on, and keep it close to the phone. Apple’s iPhone guide gives about 33 feet (10 metres) as the pairing range for iPhone, but that is guidance, not a guarantee that every device or environment will work at that distance. Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth guide covers the connection steps.
- Put the accessory in pairing or discovery mode. Many accessories need a button hold or a particular sequence; simply powering on may not be enough. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than guessing at a reset or button gesture. Apple advises checking the accessory instructions if you do not know how to make it discoverable, and Google likewise directs Android users to the accessory instructions. Apple’s connection troubleshooting guide and Google’s Android Bluetooth guide explain these checks.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and start a scan. On iPhone, go to Settings, turn on Bluetooth, and select the accessory when it appears. On Android, open Bluetooth settings, choose Pair new device or the equivalent option, and select the accessory; menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google says some accessories may need to be physically connected to the phone or tablet before pairing. Google’s device setup guide describes the standard route.
- Try a restart if the first scan finds nothing. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or restart the phone and accessory where appropriate, then scan again. Avoid resetting the phone’s network settings or factory-resetting it as an early step; those actions can disrupt other settings and are not the first checks for a pairing problem.
If the gadget appears but pairing fails
Respond to the setup prompt
Follow any PIN, passcode, or confirmation prompt on the phone or accessory. If both show a PIN, check that the numbers match before confirming. Do not assume there is one universal Bluetooth code: consult the accessory’s instructions. Google identifies 0000 and 1234 as common passcodes to try only when the requested code is unknown; they are not guaranteed to work. Google’s Android pairing instructions include this guidance.
Check app permission and compatibility
Some accessories rely on a companion app to complete setup. On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and make sure the app has Bluetooth access. If pairing still fails, verify with the accessory manufacturer that the model supports your phone and its operating system. Apple recommends checking both app permission and compatibility. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

If a previously paired gadget will not reconnect
- Remove the saved pairing from the phone. In Bluetooth settings, select the accessory and choose the option to forget, remove, or unpair it. On iPhone, the option is available from the accessory’s information screen in Settings > Bluetooth. Android wording varies, but Google’s guide explains how to manage saved devices. Apple’s guide and Google’s guide provide platform steps.
- Put the accessory back in discovery mode, then pair it again. Forgetting the phone’s saved entry does not necessarily put the accessory itself into pairing mode; use its model instructions.
- Check for another host. If the accessory is connected or paired to another phone, tablet, or computer, disconnect or unpair it there before retrying. A device connected to another host may not be available to the phone you are troubleshooting.
For a car Bluetooth connection
Remove the old phone entry from both the phone and the car’s stored-device list, then start pairing again. Cars differ in whether pairing must be initiated from the phone or the vehicle display, so follow the vehicle manual. Google specifically recommends clearing old entries on both sides for Android-to-car pairing. Google’s Android Bluetooth guide includes car troubleshooting.
If Android Fast Pair does not appear
A missing Fast Pair notification does not by itself mean the phone’s Bluetooth radio is broken. Search from Bluetooth settings and use the standard Pair new device route instead. Fast Pair works only with compatible accessories and requires Bluetooth and Location to be enabled; Google’s setup instructions say the accessory should be within 0.5 m (1.6 ft) for discovery. It does not automatically find and set up every Bluetooth device. Google’s Android Bluetooth guide lists Fast Pair requirements.

Use the pattern to decide what to check next
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| The accessory never appears | Confirm it has power, is in model-specific discovery mode, and is close to the phone; then scan from Bluetooth settings. |
| The accessory appears, but setup is rejected | Follow PIN or confirmation prompts, check app Bluetooth permission if setup uses an app, and verify compatibility with the manufacturer. |
| It paired before but no longer reconnects | Forget it on the phone, enable discovery mode again, and check whether it is connected to another host. |
| One accessory fails, but other Bluetooth devices work | Focus on that accessory’s power, instructions, saved connections, and compatibility. |
| No Bluetooth accessory works, or Bluetooth cannot be enabled | Seek phone-platform or manufacturer support rather than assuming one failed pairing proves a hardware fault. |
When to contact support
If the problem is limited to one accessory, contact its maker if its pairing procedure or phone compatibility is unclear. If Bluetooth cannot be switched on, the control is greyed out, or no accessory connects to an iPhone or iPad, Apple advises contacting Apple Support. On Android, troubleshooting steps can depend on the operating-system version, hardware, and manufacturer customizations; if Google’s steps do not fit or work on your phone, contact its manufacturer. Apple’s support guide and Google’s guide describe when to escalate.
