A Bitcoin transaction is unconfirmed until it is included in a block. A low fee compared with current demand for block space can delay it, but block timing is unpredictable and no fee bump guarantees confirmation by a deadline. Check the transaction in the wallet or service that sent it; if the wallet supports it, the sender may be able to use Replace-by-Fee (RBF), while someone who controls an unconfirmed output may be able to use Child Pays for Parent (CPFP).

What “unconfirmed” means

A wallet can report that a transaction was sent or received as soon as it has been broadcast, before it is recorded in a block. That notification is not the same as blockchain confirmation or settlement. A transaction becomes confirmed when it is included in a block.

Bitcoin adds blocks about every 10 minutes on average, according to Bitcoin.org’s FAQ. That is an average, not a schedule: an individual block can arrive sooner or later, so it does not establish when a particular transaction will confirm. A transaction’s wait can also depend on its fee relative to competing demand for block space.

Why a transaction can remain pending

Its fee is not competitive with current demand

Fees depend on transaction size and demand for block space. If demand rises after a wallet estimates a fee, transactions offering less attractive fees may wait while miners select other transactions. A fee estimate is a snapshot or wallet estimate, not a promise. Bitcoin.org explains transaction fees and confirmations in its FAQ.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Block discovery takes an unpredictable amount of time

Even a transaction with an appropriate fee has no guaranteed confirmation window because blocks are found probabilistically. Waiting longer than the roughly 10-minute average between blocks does not by itself show that the transaction has failed.

It may not be pending anymore

A transaction can be replaced, disappear from a wallet’s current view, or already be included in a block. Check its transaction ID (TXID) and status before trying to pay again. A block explorer can help check public blockchain status, but only the sending wallet or service can tell you which fee controls it offers.

How to check and respond

  1. Find the TXID. Open the sending wallet or service and locate the transaction details. Check whether it is still unconfirmed, has been replaced, or has confirmations.
  2. Review the fee information. Look for the fee rate and any wallet message about the pending transaction. Fee conditions change, so do not treat an old recommendation or a displayed time estimate as a commitment.
  3. If you sent it, check for a fee-bump option. Look for controls named “increase fee,” “bump fee,” or RBF. The wallet may need to reduce change or use additional inputs to fund a replacement, and the replacement must meet the relay and mempool policies it encounters.
  4. If you received it, check whether CPFP is available. This requires control of an unconfirmed output from the pending transaction and a wallet that can spend it. The child transaction’s fee must make the combined parent-and-child package attractive enough for miners; your wallet or service may not provide this feature.
  5. If you cannot bump it, consider waiting or contacting the service. For an exchange withdrawal or other custodial transaction, contact the service that created it: you may not control the signing wallet or its inputs.
  6. Do not send a second payment blindly. First determine whether it could duplicate the transfer or conflict with the pending transaction. For consequential payments, wait for confirmations appropriate to the value and risk instead of treating an unconfirmed notification as final.

RBF and CPFP: which method fits?

Question RBF CPFP
Who can generally start it? The sender, using a wallet that controls the original transaction. Anyone who controls an output of the unconfirmed parent, often sender change or a recipient output.
What happens? A replacement transaction spends the same input or inputs and pays a higher fee, subject to policy. A new child transaction spends an output of the parent; miners can consider the combined package fee rate.
What wallet support is needed? The wallet must support replacing or bumping the transaction and signing the replacement. The wallet must support spending an unconfirmed output and creating the dependent child.
Main constraint The original and replacement must meet the relay and mempool policies in use. Bitcoin Core’s wallet RPC expects the transaction to be in that wallet. You must control an eligible parent output, and ancestor or package policy can constrain acceptance.
Does it guarantee confirmation? No. No.

RBF replaces the pending transaction; CPFP adds a dependent transaction whose fee may help incentivize confirmation of the package. Neither is a way to reverse a transaction after it is confirmed. See Bitcoin Core’s Opt-in RBF FAQ and Bitcoin Optech’s fee-bumping guide.

Why fee bumping depends on wallet and network policy

RBF is not simply a matter of typing a higher fee rate. Bitcoin Core’s live mempool replacement policy documentation says a replacement must pay at least the originals’ aggregate absolute fees, add enough fee to cover relay bandwidth at the incremental relay feerate, stay within the policy’s conflicting-cluster limit, and strictly improve the mempool feerate diagram. The page lists full-RBF as default policy beginning with Bitcoin Core v28.0 and a default incremental relay feerate of 0.1 sat/vB in the documented policy. These are Bitcoin Core policy details, not universal fee advice or a guarantee that every node, wallet, exchange, or miner behaves identically.

Bitcoin.org’s psbtbumpfee RPC reference describes a wallet operation for an eligible opt-in RBF transaction that is in the wallet. It can fund the increased fee by reducing change or adding inputs, using either a wallet estimate or a user-supplied fee rate subject to a minimum relay increment. Most users should use their wallet’s own fee-bump controls rather than constructing a replacement manually.

Is an unconfirmed Bitcoin payment final?

No. Bitcoin Core’s Opt-in RBF FAQ explains that transactions move through an asynchronous distributed system without a globally consistent “first” transaction. Conflicting spends may therefore be possible before confirmation. The number of confirmations to wait for depends on the payment’s value and the risk you are willing to accept; an unconfirmed notification alone is not proof of final settlement.
