Movement in games is doing more than getting a character from one place to another. Across several 2026 game announcements, it is being framed as a way to express a character, connect combat actions, open up exploration, or impose a tactical cost. That makes the year feel quietly consequential—but the available examples show a design trend, not proof of an industry-wide revolution.
What is changing about movement design?
There is no single new movement formula. Instead, developers are emphasizing different purposes for movement: it can make a hero feel distinct, keep a fight flowing, turn a landscape into an exploration space, or force players to weigh the risk of moving aggressively. Comparing these games by “best movement” misses the point; the more useful questions are what movement is for, how it handles momentum, and how much control it gives the player.
How the 2026 examples use movement
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis makes traversal part of Lara’s identity
Crystal Dynamics describes traversal as central to Lara Croft’s character. Game Director Raul Siqueira said the team wanted her movement “to be fluid and acrobatic in a way that only Lara Croft can move,” while Design Director Jason Epps described the goal as movement that feels “graceful, fluid, and expressive.” The developers also say the original design is intended to be a little slower than modern games, while still letting players chain traversal to move faster and reach places sooner. Those are statements of design intent, rather than an independent assessment of how the finished game plays. Read Crystal Dynamics’ discussion of traversal.
Modern Warfare 4 links movement transitions to player control
Activision’s multiplayer feature description emphasizes responsive transitions and routes through the environment. Its named mechanics include Mantle Slide, Mantle Momentum, Mantle Steering, Supine Slide, Pipe Climb, and Fast Pipe Slide. Mantle Momentum is described as preserving momentum until an obstacle is cleared; Mantle Steering lets a player aim or abort after a mantle begins. Pipe traversal adds vertical routes, while the slide and mantle options are intended to connect actions rather than leave the player locked into a single animation. These are announced features and developer claims, not measured evidence of competitive impact or player preference. See the official Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer movement description.

Wuthering Waves treats traversal as a way to explore
Xbox Wire’s Partner Preview announcement describes Rover soaring, swinging, sliding, and traveling quickly by motorbike while exploring and fighting. The range of options suggests an exploration-first role for movement: traversing the world becomes part of the activity, rather than simply a gap between encounters. The announcement does not establish how the options feel in play or whether availability differs by region or platform. Read Xbox Wire’s Wuthering Waves announcement.
Marathon makes mobility a tactical trade-off
Not every design aims to maximize freedom or speed. In a March 31, 2026 developer update, Bungie stated: “One of our core philosophies for Marathon is that rapid repositioning and aggression must always have a meaningful cost.” That is a design philosophy, not a published measurement of balance. It highlights a different question for movement design: what does a player give up when choosing to move quickly or attack aggressively? Read Bungie’s Marathon update.

Gears of War: E-Day is rebuilding around series pillars
An Xbox Wire interview and podcast page dated June 9, 2026 describes The Coalition’s approach as rebuilding movement and combat around the pillars of the Gears series. It is evidence of a deliberate design direction, but the available description is not specific enough to support claims about particular movement mechanics. Read the Xbox Wire interview.
What these approaches have in common—and where they differ
| Game | Movement’s stated purpose | Momentum and space | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis | Express Lara’s character through graceful, acrobatic traversal | Traversal can be chained for speed and reach; the design is described as a little slower than modern games | Developer intent, not independent play testing |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | Connect combat transitions while retaining control | Momentum can carry through a mantle; pipe climbing adds vertical routes | Announced mechanics and publisher description, not measured competitive results |
| Wuthering Waves | Support exploration as well as fighting | Soaring, swinging, sliding, and motorbike travel broaden traversal options | Official announcement; feel and regional or platform availability are not established |
| Marathon | Make rapid repositioning and aggression carry a cost | Rapid movement is framed as a tactical trade-off | Bungie’s stated design philosophy, not a measured balance outcome |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Rebuild movement and combat around franchise pillars | Specific mechanics are not stated in the cited description | Design direction described in an official interview |
The examples also raise a question about agency: how much steering or cancellation does a player retain, and can opponents still read or answer a movement choice? Modern Warfare 4’s official material emphasizes control and responsiveness, but the cited descriptions do not measure readability, balance, or how players respond in practice.

Is 2026 really a revolutionary year for game movement?
“Revolutionary” is best read as an editorial description of a notable cluster of design approaches, not a statistical conclusion. The official sources document varied intentions across several games, but they do not measure how common these approaches are across the industry, compare them with earlier years, or show their effects on player outcomes. The examples make a strong case that developers are treating movement as a meaningful part of character, combat, exploration, and tactical decision-making. They do not prove that the industry as a whole has changed course.
Because these are announcements and developer statements, rather than independent tests of finished builds, mechanics may change before launch or through later patches. The cited material also does not establish accessibility benefits or competitive outcomes.
