Florian Wirtz is a German attacking midfielder who joined Liverpool in June 2025. Liverpool’s player profile lists him as a midfielder wearing No. 7, but his role is more fluid than that label suggests: he can create from the left, move into central No. 10 spaces or lead the line as a false nine. His game combines chance creation and dribbling with energetic pressing.
What position does Florian Wirtz play?
The clearest shorthand is attacking midfielder. Liverpool officially categorizes him as a midfielder, while his tactical position depends on the team’s shape and what it needs from him. He is not limited to a fixed central No. 10 role.
In Liverpool’s analysis of his final Bundesliga season at Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz was used mainly as an inverted winger on the left. He often moved inward toward the spaces associated with a No. 10; 45 per cent of his open-play touches that season came on the left side of the opposition half. Under Xabi Alonso, he had also played as a false nine in the 2023–24 season. Liverpool’s tactical and statistical analysis describes those roles and figures.
- Left-sided creator: starts wider, then cuts inside to combine or create.
- Central No. 10: finds pockets between midfield and defence to receive and set up attacks.
- False nine: drops away from the front line rather than staying as a conventional striker.
Those are different uses of the same adaptable attacking midfielder, not contradictory descriptions of his position.

How does Wirtz play?
Chance creation and close control
Wirtz looks for spaces where he can receive and turn an attack into a scoring opportunity. Liverpool’s analysis describes him as a creative, two-footed player who combines passing with dribbling. In that article, Liverpool reported 253 open-play chances created in the Bundesliga since his league debut in May 2020, and 44 Bundesliga assists over that league tenure at the time of publication. These are historical Bundesliga figures, not Liverpool totals.
Pressing and winning the ball high
His contribution is not confined to possession. Liverpool reported that Wirtz averaged 1.25 high turnovers per 90 minutes in the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, the most in that competition, and recorded 71 high turnovers across the preceding two Bundesliga seasons—at least 15 more than any other player in the league over that span. In Leverkusen’s nine Champions League appearances in 2024–25, Liverpool said he led his team with 679 pressures. Each figure describes the stated competition and period, rather than his current Liverpool output.

Why freedom matters to his role
Wirtz has explained the value of being able to move to useful areas rather than being tied to one spot: “I think I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me.” He said he tries to find the right places and spaces to receive the ball, become dangerous and create chances. In a Liverpool interview, he described that approach in his own words.
