Match the Windows setting to the symptom: if touch stops working after sleep, check the touchscreen device’s power-management option; if taps land in the wrong place, calibrate the screen. First confirm your exact Dell configuration has a touchscreen—these steps cannot add touch capability to a non-touch display.
Start by confirming the Dell has a touchscreen
In Windows, search for and open View pen and touch info. If Device Specifications says “No pen or touch input is available for this display,” Windows does not identify that display as touch-enabled. You can also look up the laptop’s original configuration on Dell Support using its model or Service Tag. A missing touchscreen entry in Device Manager may simply reflect a non-touch configuration.
Choose the setting that matches the problem

Stop touch from failing after sleep
Dell says power settings can cause a touchscreen to stop working after the computer wakes from sleep. The relevant control is on the touchscreen device itself—not a general Windows sleep or battery setting.
- Press Windows + R, enter
devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager. - Expand Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen, and select Properties.
- Open the Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, if the option is present, and select OK.
- Test touch after the laptop next wakes from sleep.
The Power Management tab or checkbox is not available on every model or driver. If it is absent, do not change unrelated global power settings as a substitute; continue with the checks below.

Calibrate when taps are misaligned
Calibration is for a touchscreen that responds but registers taps away from where you touch. It is not a general remedy for a completely unresponsive display.
- Open Control Panel, then choose Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings.
- Select Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.
- If prompted, select the applicable display, choose Calibrate, then choose Touch input.
- Tap each crosshair as it appears, keep the screen resolution unchanged during calibration, and save the calibration when Windows prompts you.
Re-enable the device and use supported updates
In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices and look for HID-compliant touch screen. If it is disabled, enable it. Dell says touchscreen drivers are built into recent Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases; Windows Update can provide an applicable driver when one is needed. Dell also describes uninstalling the touchscreen device and restarting so Windows can reinstall it when troubleshooting calls for that step. Avoid third-party driver downloads that are not supplied for your system.

Understand Windows 11 tablet behavior
Windows 11 has no manual Tablet Mode toggle. On a compatible 2-in-1 or detachable Dell, the interface adapts when the keyboard is folded back or detached. Work through other common causes
If the symptom remains, Dell’s troubleshooting sequence includes restarting, checking that the device is enabled, installing applicable Windows updates, and running Dell SupportAssist touchscreen diagnostics. Clean the display only with the computer off and its power cable disconnected: use a clean, soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water, and let the screen dry before reconnecting power. Dell cautions that detergents can leave residue and some screen protectors can interfere with touch.

For model-specific firmware, graphics, monitor, touch, or BIOS updates, use Dell’s support information for your exact system. Touch firmware is not available for every laptop or monitor, so install it only if Dell provides it for that configuration. Run the touchscreen test from your system’s Dell support page by selecting the touch screen component under diagnostics. Dell advises contacting Technical Support if the test fails. Seek model-specific help sooner for visible screen damage or touch failure after a drop, liquid exposure, or pressure. A factory restore is an advanced last resort in Dell’s troubleshooting sequence, not a first step; back up important files before any reset.
