Five Windows settings and app behaviors can add avoidable work to startup or everyday use: unnecessary startup apps, nonessential background activity, visual effects, an efficiency-focused power mode, and a broad Search index. They are worth checking, but they are not five universal “slow PC” switches. Startup entries vary with installed apps, power behavior depends on the device and current configuration, and a slow computer may instead be short on storage or limited by aging hardware.

For most people, the least disruptive first steps are to disable only unneeded startup apps and restrict background activity only for apps that do not need to sync or send notifications. Then adjust visual effects if the interface feels sluggish, use Best performance only for demanding work when its battery and heat tradeoffs make sense, and narrow Search indexing only if its scope is unnecessarily broad. Each change is reversible.

Which Windows 11 settings should you check first?

Start with the changes most likely to reduce unnecessary background work and least likely to disrupt how you use the PC: review startup apps, then review background permissions one app at a time. The other three settings are more situational. Visual effects matter most when the interface itself feels sluggish; power mode is a workload-versus-battery choice; Search indexing needs attention when the indexed scope or indexing activity is a problem.

Microsoft’s guidance on improving PC performance identifies several possible causes of slowdowns, including low disk space, startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations. That matters because changing a setting is useful only if it addresses the bottleneck. A setting audit can reduce avoidable work, but it cannot make an old processor faster or compensate for a storage or memory limitation.

At a glance

Setting to inspect Primary resource Potential benefit Main tradeoff Useful signal
Startup apps Startup time and background use Less work at sign-in An app is not ready automatically Task Manager’s Startup apps list
Background app permissions Background processing Less unnecessary activity while idle Delayed or missing sync and notifications Battery usage and app behavior
Visual effects Interface rendering and system resources A potentially more responsive feel on constrained PCs Less animation and visual polish Visible lag when using the interface
Power mode CPU power behavior Higher performance potential under demanding work More power use, heat, fan noise, or battery drain Behavior during a plugged-in workload
Search indexing scope Disk and index maintenance activity Less indexing work for unnecessary locations Search may be slower or less complete for excluded locations Search indexing status and indexed locations

These are inspection targets, not a ranked promise of speed gains. Microsoft does not provide a controlled benchmark assigning a particular number of seconds or percentage improvement to changing each setting. Make one change at a time and compare the relevant symptom rather than expecting a universal boost.

1. Could startup apps be making Windows start slowly?

Yes. Apps set to launch at sign-in can extend the time before a PC is ready and continue using resources after startup. Microsoft says, “Apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.”

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Review the entries and disable only apps you do not need to open automatically after sign-in.
  4. Restart or sign out and back in, then check whether sign-in feels less burdened and the app still works when you open it manually.

Disabling an entry here stops its automatic launch; it does not uninstall the application. Keep security tools, hardware-control utilities, backup or sync tools, and work software enabled when you rely on them. For example, disabling a sync app may be inconvenient if you expect files to upload as soon as you sign in, even if it reduces work during startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable an entry just because its name is unfamiliar. Look up what it belongs to using the app’s name or publisher information before changing it. If you are unsure whether you depend on it, leave it enabled and revisit it after you understand its role. The goal is to remove clearly unnecessary automatic launches, not to produce the shortest possible list.

If sign-in remains slow after that review, startup apps may not be the main cause. Check whether the PC has enough free storage, whether Windows and relevant software are up to date, and whether resource usage remains high after startup settles.

2. Should you turn off background apps in Windows 11?

Only for apps that do not need to keep working when you are not using them. Restricting background activity can reduce unnecessary processing, but it may also affect notifications, syncing, updates, or other app conveniences.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the app you want to review and open its menu.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Under Background app permissions, choose a more restrictive option if the app does not need background activity.
  5. Check later that the app’s notifications, sync, or other expected behavior still works.

Use this control selectively. A messaging app may need background activity to deliver timely notifications; a cloud or backup app may need it to sync. A rarely used utility that does not need to keep updating while you work may be a better candidate. If restricting an app causes a problem, return to the same control and restore the previous permission.

Windows already prioritizes foreground apps by giving them more memory and execution time while limiting background apps, according to Microsoft’s technical documentation. Per-app controls let you make further choices, but that does not mean every background process is wasteful or that disabling every app is a safe optimization. Battery usage can help identify apps that deserve a closer look, while the app’s actual role determines whether restricting it is sensible.

3. Do Windows 11 visual effects use system resources?

They can. Microsoft says, “Windows 11 visual effects can use system resources.” Reducing effects may make the interface feel more responsive on a low-end or memory-constrained PC, but it is a preference tradeoff, not a hardware upgrade or guaranteed speed increase.

  1. Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  2. Open the matching system settings dialog.
  3. Select the Visual Effects tab.
  4. Choose Adjust for best performance if you want to prioritize simpler effects over visual polish.
  5. Use the PC for the tasks that felt sluggish. If the change makes the interface less pleasant without helping, return and choose effects more selectively.

Expect fewer animations and other visual flourishes. If the computer mainly feels slow while opening programs, loading files, or performing a demanding task, visual effects may not be the relevant bottleneck. They affect interface rendering and the resources used for visual polish; they do not add processor, graphics, memory, or storage capacity.

4. Is Best performance worth the battery drain?

It can be worthwhile for a demanding workload when the laptop is plugged in and you accept the extra power use. It is not the best permanent setting for every laptop: Microsoft says, “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → System → Power & battery.
  2. Find Power mode and select Best performance when you have a specific demanding task to run.
  3. Compare that task’s responsiveness with your normal mode, preferably while plugged in.
  4. Switch back when the task is done if battery life, heat, or fan noise matters more than peak responsiveness.

Microsoft documents Best performance as a mode that can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed. The benefit is conditional: it may matter under load, not during every ordinary activity. Microsoft also describes Best Power Efficiency as reducing power consumption by limiting background activity. These modes make the tradeoff explicit rather than revealing a defective default.

Power mode availability and behavior can vary by device, Windows edition, and current configuration. If the setting is absent or its label differs, search Start for Power mode and inspect the options your PC exposes. Do not treat battery drain or warmth as a surprising side effect when choosing a mode intended to favor performance.

5. Does Windows Search indexing slow down a PC?

Indexing can create disk and maintenance work, especially when the indexed scope is large or changes frequently. That does not mean Windows Search should be turned off blindly: narrow the locations that need instant search rather than removing the service without a reason.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows.
  2. Review the indexed scope and exclude folders whose contents do not need to appear quickly in search.
  3. For more detailed control, open Advanced indexing options.
  4. Check indexing status before making further changes. Rebuild the index only when it is corrupted or clearly out of date.

Microsoft Learn says the index database grows considerably once the number of indexed items exceeds 400,000. In the documented troubleshooting context, the index is generally about 10 percent of the size of the content being indexed. These figures are useful context for a very large index, not proof that a particular PC’s index is causing a slowdown.

A rebuild is not a quick first-line fix. Microsoft says rebuilding can take up to 24 hours. Indexing may also slow or pause while you are actively using the computer, when it is on battery, or under heavy resource load. If search is working and indexing is not the problem, rebuilding can create more work without addressing the actual cause.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance documents a normal Windows Search service state of Automatic (Delayed Start) and provides supported exclusion and rebuild options. Avoid disabling the service as a generic performance tweak: it can undermine the search function without establishing that indexing was the source of the problem.

What order should you use for a safe settings audit?

Change one thing at a time, beginning with the least disruptive option. That makes it easier to see whether a setting affected the symptom and to reverse the change if an app or feature stops behaving as expected.

  1. Check Task Manager’s Startup apps list. Disable only entries you clearly do not need at sign-in; keep security, hardware, backup, sync, and work utilities that you rely on.
  2. Review background permissions. Restrict nonessential apps individually, then confirm that needed notifications and syncing still work.
  3. Test visual effects if the interface feels sluggish. Decide whether a simpler appearance is worth the possible responsiveness benefit on your hardware.
  4. Try Best performance for a defined demanding task. Prefer a plugged-in test and switch back if battery life, heat, or fan noise becomes a concern.
  5. Inspect Search indexing scope. Exclude unnecessary locations first; rebuild only for corruption or a clearly outdated index.
  6. Recheck the original symptom. Compare sign-in, idle behavior, interface responsiveness, workload performance, or search behavior as appropriate.

Every change in this list is reversible through the same settings or Task Manager paths. If restricting an app breaks a needed function, restore its permission. If visual changes are unpleasant, restore the effects you want. If a power-mode change costs more battery than the task justifies, switch back. The point is to match each setting to a real need, not to make every Windows option as restrictive as possible.

What if Windows is still slow after these changes?

Look beyond defaults. Microsoft’s performance guidance includes low disk space, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations among possible causes. Check available storage, install relevant Windows updates, review optional drivers where appropriate, and check resource use when the slowdown occurs. A high resource reading is a clue to investigate, not by itself a diagnosis.

Older hardware may not improve significantly from settings changes; Microsoft notes that upgrading may be the best long-term solution in that situation. The right upgrade depends on the specific PC and bottleneck, so do not assume that adding memory or changing a storage device is the answer without identifying the limitation first.

Windows 11 is the focus here. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes, according to Microsoft Support. Setting labels can also shift across Windows updates, editions, languages, or manufacturer builds; when a path does not match your screen, search Start using the setting’s name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether a startup app is really affecting boot time?

Use the Startup apps list as a way to identify what launches automatically, then change only a clearly unnecessary entry and compare sign-in behavior after restarting. The list does not prove that any one app is the cause of a delay, and Microsoft does not publish a universal time saving for disabling one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will turning off these Windows settings damage my files or uninstall apps?

These controls change whether apps launch, run in the background, or are indexed; disabling a startup entry does not uninstall its app. The practical risk is losing a convenience you rely on, such as timely notifications or sync, so restore the setting if an expected feature stops working.

Can these changes make an old Windows PC feel like a new one?

No settings audit can replace processor, memory, graphics, or storage capability. Microsoft cautions that older PCs may not see significant improvement and that an upgrade may be the better long-term answer when hardware is the limiting factor.

Does Windows 10 still get the same performance and security updates?

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. The setting paths in this article are Windows 11-first, so Windows 10 users may see different controls.
