That is a documented example, not a confirmed match for the headline.
What DLL and build did Microsoft document?
In its October 16, 2025 announcement, Microsoft said Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27971 for the Canary Channel fixed an underlying issue involving microsoft.ink.dll and related APIs. The issue could prevent pen and handwriting from working correctly in apps or cause apps to crash with unexpected exceptions. Microsoft’s Build 27971 announcement does not establish that this is the fix referenced by the headline, whose originating report or build number is not specified.
Should you install an Insider build to get this fix?
Do not install a preview build solely on the assumption that it contains the fix described in an unspecified headline. Build 27971 was a Canary preview, not a confirmed general-release update for all Windows 11 users. Microsoft describes Canary builds as early platform changes that may not correspond to a specific future Windows release, and features in them may change or never ship. Leaving Canary is a significant consideration: Microsoft says moving from the Canary Channel to another channel requires a clean Windows installation. Review Microsoft’s guidance before joining or changing channels.

How do the later Release Preview notes fit?
Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2 Build 26300.9278 for Release Preview on August 27, 2026. Eligible Release Preview Insiders can check for it under Settings > Windows Update. That announcement does not show that this build includes the microsoft.ink.dll fix, so the two should not be treated as the same update. Read Microsoft’s 26H2 Release Preview announcement.
A separate Release Preview note dated September 10, 2026, describes a crash with error code 0x139 while streaming Bluetooth audio across listed Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 builds. It does not name a DLL and is a distinct issue, not evidence identifying the headline’s DLL fix. See Microsoft’s September Release Preview notes.

Microsoft also cautions that some features and fixes can arrive gradually, so availability may vary during a phased rollout. The Release Preview notes describe this rollout caveat.
