For most TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 routers, change the network name and password, select the strongest security mode your router and devices support, and leave channel, channel width, and advanced Wi-Fi 6 controls at their defaults unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem. TP-Link says typical settings are preconfigured for performance and security; available options and menu names depend on the model, hardware version, region, and firmware. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi settings guide was last updated September 23, 2026.
Which Wi-Fi settings should you change first?
Start with the settings that protect and identify your network. Use a network name that is easy for your household to recognize but does not reveal personal details, and set a long, unique Wi-Fi password. If either is still at its factory value or the password may have been shared too widely, update it and reconnect your devices.
When you change the name or password while managing the router over Wi-Fi, the device you are using will lose its connection. Join the network again with the new credentials after saving.
Which security mode should you use?
Choose WPA3-Personal if the router and all the devices that need to connect support it. If older devices need compatibility, TP-Link documents WPA2-PSK [AES] and WPA2/WPA3-Personal as alternatives, where available. Check the options in your router’s interface and the guide for its exact model and hardware version; do not assume every TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 router presents the same choices. TP-Link’s general guide and the Archer AX72 V1 user guide describe these security options.

#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Avoid open security and legacy modes when possible. If a device will not connect after you select WPA3, check whether that device supports it; use a documented compatibility option if needed rather than weakening security without a specific reason.
Should you turn on Smart Connect?
Smart Connect uses one network name across bands and lets the router steer devices. Leave it enabled if you prefer a single network to manage and your devices work normally. If one device has a band-specific connection problem, temporarily separating the band names can help you test whether its behavior differs between bands. The right choice depends on your household and client devices, not a universal performance rule. TP-Link describes Smart Connect in its Wi-Fi settings guide.
Should you hide the network name?
Usually, no. Keep SSID broadcast on for ordinary use. Hiding the SSID removes the name from ordinary network scans, but people who want to join must enter the network name manually. TP-Link documents that behavior; hiding the name is not a substitute for a strong password and appropriate security mode. TP-Link’s guide explains SSID broadcast settings.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Should you change the channel or channel width?
Channel
Keep the channel on Auto initially. Consider a manual channel only when you have evidence that nearby access points are causing interference. Radio conditions differ by location, so a channel that helps in one home may not help in another. TP-Link says a manual change is generally unnecessary unless interference is an issue. Its Wi-Fi settings guide covers channel selection.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Leave channel width on Auto unless you are testing a specific connection problem. The widths available depend on the band and router model. TP-Link’s slow-internet advice gives example widths for troubleshooting, not universal recommended settings for every home or model. See TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance for those examples.
What about OFDMA, Target Wake Time, and other Wi-Fi 6 controls?
Leave advanced controls at their shipped settings unless your model’s guide or a specific troubleshooting case gives you a reason to change them. Features and labels vary across models. TP-Link notes in its Archer AX72 V1 guide that compatible clients are needed to fully benefit from OFDMA; do not assume the same controls or behavior are present on every router.

How to change settings safely
-
Find the support page and user guide for your router’s exact model and hardware version. Menu paths and available settings vary, and TP-Link advises checking the correct hardware-version page and firmware notes. Start with TP-Link’s current Wi-Fi settings FAQ.
-
Open the router’s web management page or, if your model supports it, use the Tether app. The address and menu path are model-specific; follow the relevant guide rather than relying on a generic path.

How to troubleshoot without guessing
There is no single channel, channel width, or band arrangement that can be prescribed for every home. Compare the connection before and after one change at a time, and keep a note of the original setting. Useful comparisons include:
Best Value

-
Whether the issue affects one device or all devices.
-
Whether it occurs on one band or both.
-
Whether the main problem is connection stability or throughput.
-
Whether the result changes after one specific setting is adjusted.
These comparisons help isolate a cause; they do not guarantee that a particular configuration will increase speed. For broader troubleshooting examples, consult TP-Link’s slow-internet guide.
