For TV audio over HDMI, connect the TV’s port labeled HDMI eARC, HDMI ARC, or HDMI eARC/ARC to the soundbar’s matching TV/ARC/eARC port. The title’s “only port that matters” is a hook, not a literal rule: this is the port for returning TV audio, while other HDMI ports still matter for connecting video sources.
Which HDMI port should connect to your soundbar?
Look for the ARC/eARC marking beside one of the TV’s HDMI ports. Connect that port to the soundbar’s HDMI port labeled something like TV eARC/ARC. Labels vary by model, so check the device markings and manuals rather than assuming that any HDMI socket will return TV audio. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s eARC setup guidance recommends using the TV’s eARC port.
Use the same approach with an AV receiver (AVR): connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the receiver’s corresponding port. A physical HDMI cable is required for this setup.
What does the TV’s ARC/eARC port do?
ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. It lets the TV send audio back over HDMI to a connected soundbar or AVR, rather than requiring a separate audio cable. eARC is the enhanced version. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes eARC as a way to send audio from cable, satellite, streaming, or source devices connected to the TV to an AVR or soundbar through one HDMI cable.

eARC supports higher-bitrate audio capabilities, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X, as well as uncompressed multichannel audio. The official eARC overview lists capability figures of up to 192 kHz, 24-bit audio, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and up to 32 channels. These are format and connection capabilities, not a promise that every TV, soundbar, source, or program supports them. Actual playback depends on the devices and content in your setup.
How to connect the devices
- Identify the TV port. Find the HDMI socket marked eARC, ARC, or eARC/ARC. Do not assume the other HDMI ports return audio.
- Connect the matching soundbar or AVR port. Use its port marked TV eARC/ARC or equivalent, following the device manual if the label differs.
- Check device support and settings. Confirm that both devices support the ARC/eARC mode you intend to use. Their manuals may specify eARC, audio-output, or HDMI-CEC settings; menu names and requirements vary by model.
- Choose where to connect other sources. You can connect a console or Blu-ray player to the TV and return its audio to the soundbar, or connect sources to the soundbar/AVR and connect that unit to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. The best layout depends on the devices and their capabilities.
ARC and eARC are not automatically interchangeable
ARC and eARC serve the same basic purpose, but HDMI Licensing Administrator says eARC is not defined to be backward compatible with ARC. Some products support both modes, but do not assume that an eARC device and an ARC-only device will work together as intended. Check the specifications for both endpoints and follow their setup instructions.

Will this work with any HDMI cable?
Not necessarily. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s eARC overview says eARC operation might be possible with a Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet or a High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, and describes Ultra HDMI cables as designed to support eARC. Its cable guidance also identifies Ethernet-labeled categories that support ARC/eARC.
- Check the manuals for both the TV and soundbar or AVR.
- Choose a cable category that meets the video requirements of the entire system as well as the audio-return connection.
- Do not assume that eARC alone requires buying a new or highest-tier cable.
If there is no sound, check the connection before replacing equipment
A silent soundbar does not by itself mean it needs replacing. Confirm that the cable runs from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s matching port, that both ports and devices support the intended mode, and that the cable is seated at both ends. Then consult the manuals for any required audio-output, eARC, or HDMI-CEC settings. Without the exact models, there is no single menu path or universal troubleshooting order.
