Some mouse-derived boundary-cap neural crest stem cells survived a delayed International Space Station mission and the return process, but survival depended on the cell population. In this experiment, cultures grown in 3D-printed bioscaffolds also survived better than free-floating cultures. The findings apply to cells recovered after a bundle of spaceflight and handling stresses—not to stem cells generally, or to a treatment ready for patients.
What stem cells were sent to the ISS?
The experiment studied mouse-derived boundary-cap neural crest stem cells, abbreviated BCs. These are a specific stem-cell population, not a stand-in for all stem cells. The cells flew to the International Space Station as part of Sweden’s Muninn contribution to Axiom Mission 3. Researchers compared naive cells with populations that had previously flown once or twice on sounding-rocket missions. The study, published in npj Microgravity on August 6, 2026, reports the results.
How did the delays affect the experiment?
Mission rules required delivery of the samples to the launch site 48 hours before the planned departure. Weather delays then kept them outside controlled incubator conditions for more than three weeks—four days beyond the three-week upper limit observed in the researchers’ preflight tests for survival and neurosphere production. These timings describe this experiment, not a general survival limit for stem cells.
The cells experienced multiple conditions together: transport, handling, sealed culture, time outside regulated incubator conditions, and spaceflight. The study cannot isolate microgravity as the cause of any survival or loss.

Which cell populations survived?
Survival differed across the tested groups. The authors report viable cells in specified flight and ground groups for naive BCs and cells with two prior sounding-rocket flights. The once-flown V15 population produced no viable cells. The naive-cell mission-matched ground control also did not survive; researchers used a separate laboratory comparison group, which was not fully matched to the mission.
That distinction matters: the results do not show that all flight samples survived, nor do they provide a clean, fully matched comparison for every group. The surviving populations were expanded for about a month before post-flight analyses, so the reported characteristics describe cells that lived through the mission-associated exposure and recovery period.

Did the bioscaffolds help?
Yes, in this experiment, cells supported by 3D-printed bioscaffolds showed improved survival and evidence of proliferation compared with free-floating neurospheres. This is evidence about the engineered culture conditions used in the study; it does not establish that any particular commercial scaffold will work in other settings.
What could the recovered cells still do?
After recovery, surviving cells retained the capacity to differentiate into neuronal and glial cells. The study also reports preserved basic electrophysiological properties in differentiated cells. These observations concern selected survivors, not every cell sent into space. The researchers also found differences in neuronal and glial proportions among groups, but combined exposure and culture history make those differences difficult to attribute to one factor.

The authors discuss prior-flight-associated resilience as a hypothesis, not proof that cells developed a mechanical memory of earlier flights. Flight history may be entangled with handling, storage, passaging, and culture history. Exosomal microRNA findings are exploratory and do not establish a mechanism.

Uppsala University’s October 6, 2026 coverage describes growing cells and tissues on site during future missions as a possibility under investigation—not an achieved capability or a current medical use.

This work is not a clinical trial and does not show that the cells are ready for treatment. Spaceflight research on neural cells predates this experiment: NASA’s BioScience-4 overview describes a separate ISS study of neural stem cells and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells, designed to investigate cell division and signaling in microgravity. It is background context, not evidence for the BC results.
