Before putting an old Wi-Fi router back into service, check that it still receives security updates, save any settings you need, and start with a clean configuration if you do not know what is on it. Then update its firmware, replace the administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, choose WPA3 or WPA2 security, and turn off features you do not use, such as remote management, WPS, and UPnP.
Can you safely reuse an old Wi-Fi router?
It depends on whether the manufacturer or internet service provider (ISP) still supports the device and whether it can use modern Wi-Fi security. Find the make and model on the router’s label or administration page, then check its official support page for firmware updates and support status. A router’s age alone does not establish whether it is safe or unsupported.
After installing any available update, check the security options. Use WPA3 Personal if the router supports it, or WPA2 Personal if it does not. Avoid WEP and legacy WPA. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends considering a new router if an older device still offers only WEP or WPA after a software update.
Which router settings should I change before reusing an old Wi-Fi router?
1. Record settings you may need
Before resetting the router, note anything you may need to restore, such as custom ISP or WAN settings, guest-network details, port forwarding, device names, and the current network name and password if you plan to keep them. A reset can erase custom configuration and interrupt service. Google gives the same advice to owners of supported Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices: record custom settings before a factory reset.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Factory-reset if you are starting over
A factory reset is useful when you do not know the router’s previous configuration or are transferring it to someone else. It clears settings, so first make sure you have recorded what you need. Follow the reset instructions for the exact make and model: button locations, hold times, app steps, and reset effects vary. Google, for example, documents separate app and hardware reset methods for its Wifi products.
3. Install available firmware updates
After resetting, check for firmware through the router’s official app or the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions. Firmware support and update steps are model-specific; do not assume that an old router will receive updates or that a reset installs the latest firmware. Use official instructions rather than an update file or procedure intended for a different model.

4. Replace both passwords
Set a unique administrator password and a strong Wi-Fi password. They serve different purposes: the administrator password protects access to router controls, while the Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network. Do not reuse a default password or choose one based on personal details or the router brand. The FTC also advises changing default administrative credentials and choosing a network name that does not reveal personal information.
5. Choose modern Wi-Fi encryption
Select WPA3 Personal when available; otherwise use WPA2 Personal. Do not select WEP or legacy WPA. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer, best encryption option and says WPA2 also works. CISA’s 2020 telework guidance likewise recommends WPA2 or WPA3 and disabling WEP and WPA.

6. Disable features you do not need
Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not have a specific reason to use them. They can expose administrative controls or make network access easier. Consider enabling a guest network for visitors and the router firewall if those options are available. When you finish configuring the router, log out of its administration interface.
Can I use my old Wi-Fi router with a new internet connection?
Possibly, but compatibility depends on the router, the type of internet service, and any settings required by your ISP. Check the router and ISP documentation for compatibility and connection requirements before relying on it. The information here does not establish compatibility for a particular router or provider.

If you are replacing a router but want devices to reconnect without changing their saved network details, you can use the previous Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password on the new router. Google documents this convenience for Google Wifi and Nest Wifi: devices previously on the network will not need to reconnect if the name and password are reused.
If the old router is still broadcasting that same network, devices may connect to either router or mesh point, which can cause confusing behavior. Turn off the old router if you no longer need it. Use bridge mode only if you are retaining it for a purpose supported by both devices’ instructions.

When should you replace the router instead?
If a firmware update does not add WPA2 or WPA3 and the router remains limited to WEP or WPA, follow the FTC’s advice to consider replacing it. Otherwise, first check its support status, available updates, security options, and compatibility with your ISP. If replacement is necessary, compare modern-encryption support, ongoing firmware updates, ISP compatibility, home coverage, and setup requirements; the available guidance does not establish a best model or price.
