The most useful router settings to check are the Wi-Fi channel and channel width, band selection, firmware, radio modes, WMM, and any QoS or parental-control limits. But first find out whether Wi-Fi is actually the bottleneck: wireless settings cannot fix a slow internet connection reaching the router. Change one setting at a time and compare results from the same device and location.
First, determine whether Wi-Fi is the problem
Run a wired speed test if you can. Compare a computer connected directly to the modem with one connected by Ethernet through the router. If the direct-modem result is already slow, investigate the modem or contact your internet provider before changing wireless settings; TP-Link describes this comparison in its slow internet troubleshooting guide.
To establish a clean Wi-Fi baseline, test about 6–9 feet from the router with no walls or furniture between the router and device, as TP-Link recommends. Record the result, the device, and the test location. Repeat tests under similar conditions after each change, since a different device, room, or moment can produce a different result.
Update firmware and keep a record of current settings
Check the router’s support page or admin app for firmware updates specific to its model. Apple recommends enabling automatic updates when the router supports them; updates can include stability, performance, and security improvements. Before changing settings, note or save the current configuration so you can restore it if a change makes things worse.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Router interfaces vary, so look for sections named Wi-Fi, Wireless, Advanced, or Administration rather than expecting one universal menu path. Feature names and availability can also differ by model and firmware, as ASUS’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance notes.
Pick the band that suits the device’s location
The frequency band affects the balance between range and throughput. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance describes the practical trade-off:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- 2.4 GHz: Usually reaches farther and passes through obstacles better, but may be more crowded.
- 5 GHz: Can offer higher throughput closer to the router, with shorter range than 2.4 GHz.
- 6 GHz: Can be a high-performance, less-congested option nearby when both router and client support it; its coverage is shorter, and older devices may not support it.
If the router uses one network name for multiple bands and a device appears to choose poorly, temporarily separating the band names can help you test which band performs better, if the router allows it. ASUS also describes disabling Smart Connect as a troubleshooting step. Restore your preferred arrangement once you have compared results.
Choose a channel based on local congestion
Start with the router’s automatic channel setting if it performs well; Apple recommends Auto where available. If Wi-Fi remains unreliable or slow, scan nearby networks with a Wi-Fi analyzer and test a permitted channel that is less occupied. Channel conditions are local, and available channels depend on the router, client, and regional rules.

For 2.4 GHz, Microsoft and TP-Link identify channels 1, 6, and 11 as common choices in their guidance. TP-Link also gives channels 36–48 as examples for 5 GHz. These examples are not a universal channel prescription: use only channels shown as supported by your router in your region. Microsoft’s channel guidance and TP-Link’s Wi-Fi range guide explain scanning and interference.
Adjust channel width only when there is a reason
Wider channels can increase peak throughput when conditions and devices support them, but they use more spectrum and are more exposed to interference. Apple Support puts it this way: “Wider channels are faster but more susceptible to interference, and also more likely to interfere with other devices.” A narrower width may be a better reliability test in a crowded or unstable environment.

| Band or condition | Practical starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Try 20 MHz, especially if the area is crowded or connections are unreliable. | Can improve coexistence and reliability; may limit peak throughput. |
| 5 or 6 GHz, working normally | Start with Auto or all supported widths. | Allows the router and clients to use wider channels when conditions permit. |
| 5 or 6 GHz, experiencing interference or drops | Test a narrower available width. | May improve stability at the cost of peak throughput. |
Apple recommends 20 MHz at 2.4 GHz and Auto/all widths at 5 and 6 GHz. Microsoft and Intel also describe trying narrower widths when reliability is poor; exact recommendations differ because router, client, and local radio conditions differ. See Apple’s router settings recommendations, Microsoft’s guidance, and Intel’s channel and width guide. Change the width, retest, and keep the setting only if the result improves for your actual use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep supported radio modes and WMM enabled
Use the router’s supported Wi-Fi radio modes rather than disabling newer modes without a specific compatibility reason. Apple recommends enabling supported modes and keeping WMM enabled. WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) helps prioritize traffic for applications such as voice and video; turning it off is not a general speed fix. The setting may appear under Wireless, Advanced, or QoS, depending on the router.

Check QoS and parental-control rules for unintended limits
Quality of Service (QoS) can prioritize important traffic, but a bandwidth cap, device-priority rule, parental-control schedule, or profile can also constrain a particular device. If only one device or activity is affected, inspect rules that apply to it. Temporarily disable a suspected rule as a diagnostic comparison, then restore useful prioritization or correct the rule. TP-Link includes temporarily disabling QoS or parental controls among its slow internet troubleshooting steps.
When settings are not enough: address weak coverage
If performance is acceptable near the router but poor only in distant rooms, the problem may be coverage rather than a channel setting. Place the router centrally and in an open location where practical. Walls, floors, neighboring networks, microwave ovens, cordless phones, and poor router placement can affect signal and range.
If a dead zone persists, a compatible range extender or mesh node may help extend coverage. Check compatibility with your existing router. Added coverage hardware addresses weak reach; it does not repair a slow modem or internet service, and it is not a general remedy for every cause of slow throughput. TP-Link’s range guide covers placement and coverage options.
A practical order for testing changes
- Compare wired performance through the modem and router, then record a close-range Wi-Fi baseline.
- Update firmware and note the current settings.
- Test the band appropriate to the device’s distance and capabilities.
- Leave channel selection on Auto unless a local scan or poor results justify testing another permitted channel.
- Try 20 MHz on crowded or unreliable 2.4 GHz; on 5 or 6 GHz, start with Auto and test narrower widths only if needed.
- Verify supported radio modes and WMM are enabled; inspect QoS and parental-control rules for unexpected limits.
- If only distant rooms struggle, improve placement or consider compatible coverage hardware rather than continuing to change speed-related settings.
No general speed-gain percentage is established for these changes. The best setting depends on the router, client device, local congestion, distance, obstacles, and regional channel rules.
