For most Samsung TV owners who want to add Roku, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820) is a sensible choice, provided the TV has an available HDMI port. Roku says the stick works with any TV that has HDMI; that confirms connection compatibility, not that it is the best Roku for every Samsung model or buyer. 4K and HDR depend on the capabilities of the TV, the selected input, and the rest of the setup.

Which Roku should you choose?

Start with the picture formats your Samsung TV supports and the features you actually need. The Streaming Stick 4K is a practical general recommendation when you want a compact Roku device and have an HDMI port. Roku identifies model 3820 as its Streaming Stick 4K; its compatibility guidance says the stick works with any TV that has HDMI. Roku Streaming Stick 4K compatibility and setup Roku player model information

  • For a straightforward Roku addition: Consider the Streaming Stick 4K if your Samsung TV has a free HDMI port.
  • If your TV is not 4K or HDR-capable: A 4K Roku can still connect, but it cannot make the TV display 4K or HDR.
  • If 4K or HDR matters: Check the exact TV model and HDMI input, and confirm that every device between the Roku and TV supports the required signal.
  • If you are comparing models for price or remote features: The compatibility information alone does not determine which is the best value or which remote suits you. Compare current model specifications and listings before choosing.

Roku also identifies a Streaming Stick 4K+ model, but the cited compatibility information does not establish a universal winner between the 4K and 4K+ or settle their current prices and feature trade-offs. Roku player model information

What you need for 4K and HDR

Connecting a Roku to an HDMI port is not enough by itself to guarantee 4K or HDR. Roku says 4K streaming requires a compatible 4K TV and input, a 4K-capable Roku player, a suitable streaming-service plan, and sufficient internet bandwidth. Roku says up to 25 Mbps may be needed for 4K streaming; this is a stated technical requirement, not a measured speed guarantee. For 4K over HDMI, Roku says devices in the connection must support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. Roku 4K streaming requirements

Enable the Samsung HDMI setting if needed

Some Samsung TVs require an input setting to be enabled for 4K or HDR signals. Roku gives these example paths for turning on HDMI UHD Color:

  • Some older Samsung menus: Menu > Picture > Picture Options > HDMI UHD Color > On > Restart.
  • Some newer Samsung menus: Settings > General > External Device Manager > HDMI UHD Color > On.

Menu names and paths vary by Samsung model and software version. Use the instructions for your exact TV if these options are absent or named differently. Roku 4K streaming requirements Roku troubleshooting for 4K and HDR

Connect and set up the Roku Streaming Stick 4K

  1. Insert the stick into an available HDMI port on the Samsung TV. Connect the included USB power cable to the stick. Roku says to use the supplied cable because the Wi-Fi receiver is built into it. Roku Streaming Stick 4K compatibility and setup
  2. Connect the USB cable to a power source. If the TV’s USB port does not provide enough power or you see a power warning, use the included wall adapter. Roku Streaming Stick 4K compatibility and setup
  3. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input where you connected the stick.
  4. Follow the on-screen Roku setup flow to join Wi-Fi, install updates, and link the device to a Roku account. Roku says accounts are free and it does not charge activation fees. Roku Streaming Stick 4K compatibility and setup

If the stick does not fit comfortably because of the TV’s layout, Roku says you can request a free HDMI extender. The Streaming Stick plugs into the TV, so it does not need a separate HDMI cable. Roku Streaming Stick 4K compatibility and setup

Troubleshoot a missing 4K or HDR picture

  1. Check the selected input. Make sure the TV is displaying the HDMI port used by the Roku, and confirm that this input supports the desired format.
  2. Check HDMI UHD Color. If the setting is available for that port, enable it using the menu path appropriate to your Samsung model, then restart as directed by the TV.
  3. Check the whole HDMI chain. Roku says each HDMI-connected device in the path must support HDCP 2.2 for 4K/HDR. A receiver or soundbar that does not support it may cause the signal to fall to a lower resolution.
  4. Connect directly to the TV to isolate the problem. Temporarily bypass the receiver or soundbar. If the desired format works directly, investigate that intermediate device or its connections. Roku troubleshooting for 4K and HDR

Samsung menu examples can change with the TV model and software. If the Roku still does not offer 4K or HDR, check the documentation for your exact TV and the specifications of the selected HDMI input and any devices in the signal path. Roku 4K streaming requirements
