There is no confirmed list of Resident Evil games you must finish before the next crossover. Recent reporting describes an eventual convergence between the remake and numbered-game storylines, but does not identify a specific game, release date, format or prerequisite list. If you want useful context without turning the series into homework, start with the Resident Evil 2 remake; add Resident Evil 3 and Code: Veronica if you want more Raccoon City and Claire-and-Chris history.
What the reported crossover means—and what it does not
In a September 30, 2026 report, GamesRadar attributed comments to Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi, made in a Japanese magazine special for the series’ 30th anniversary. As rendered in English by GamesRadar, Takeuchi described two tracks: numbered games carry the ongoing drama, while remakes revisit the past. He reportedly said the remake line would eventually catch up to the numbered titles and that preparations had been underway since Resident Evil Village.

The report points to connections such as Umbrella and Spencer references and Raccoon City’s return in Resident Evil Requiem. It does not announce a particular crossover game or establish which earlier stories will matter. GamesRadar also cautions that translations vary, so its English rendering should not be treated as an independently verified official transcript.
In particular, the report does not confirm remakes of Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6. Nor does it say that every older game is required. Treat the crossover as a reported direction for the franchise, not a confirmed release with a known watch-or-play list.

Choose a catch-up route based on what you want to understand
| Your goal | Suggested route | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| One modern starting point | Resident Evil 2 remake | PlayStation recommends it as a modernized version of a classic. It gives you Leon and Claire’s Raccoon City story; PlayStation also identifies Resident Evil 4 as taking place after RE2 and Leon as a Raccoon City survivor. See PlayStation’s series guide. |
| More Raccoon City and Jill | Add Resident Evil 3 remake | GamesRadar’s editorial chronology places parts of RE3 before and after RE2. That is a suggested chronological approach, not an official play requirement. See GamesRadar’s chronology. |
| Claire, Chris and remake-line history | Play Code: Veronica, or watch for Resident Evil Veronica | GamesRadar describes the original as following RE2 and bringing Claire and Chris together. Capcom has announced a remake, but has not linked it to any crossover prerequisite. |
| Broad franchise context | Choose other entries by character or era, rather than trying to complete everything | PlayStation says each game tells a complete story in isolation; recaps, notes, diaries and dialogue help returning players catch up. |
This is an optional context-building route, not a confirmed Capcom order. For most readers, RE2 is the best stopping point if they want to play only one game before whatever comes next.
What is confirmed about Resident Evil Veronica
Capcom announced on June 8, 2026, that Resident Evil Veronica is a remake of the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica, released in 2000. The remake is scheduled for 2027, with its release date and further details to be announced later. Capcom lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The announcement confirms the remake, not a connection to a future crossover or a need to play it first: Capcom’s announcement.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Do you need to play the older games to follow the series?
No. PlayStation says individual Resident Evil games tell complete stories in isolation, even though the entries share connective narrative threads. If you want a quick introduction, the games themselves offer recaps and story details through notes, diaries and dialogue. Earlier games can add character and historical context, but the available guidance does not make finishing the franchise a condition for understanding a new entry.

Capcom reported more than 201 million cumulative game sales as of March 31, 2026. That is a franchise-wide cumulative figure, not sales in 2026 alone or a total for any individual Resident Evil title: Capcom’s figures.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
