1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnable Remote Play on the PS5, allow network wake if you want Portal to connect while the console is in Rest Mode, then optimize the connection: PlayStation recommends wiring the PS5 to the router and using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal. These settings make the console available and improve the recommended connection setup; they cannot guarantee a smooth stream on every network.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play. PlayStation says this generally needs to be enabled only once, unless the setting is changed later. PlayStation’s PS5 Remote Play setup guide and its US Remote Play instructions describe the setup.

The PS5 must be connected to the internet, and the Portal and console must use the same PlayStation account. PlayStation also advises keeping PS5 system software up to date.
Allow Portal to wake the PS5 from Rest Mode
If you want to connect while the PS5 is resting, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both settings:
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
- Stay Connected to the Internet
- Enable Turning on PS5 from Network
These options let the console remain reachable and wake over the network. They are not stream-quality controls for a Remote Play session that is already connected. PlayStation lists the Rest Mode requirements in its Portal setup guidance and Remote Play instructions.
Use PlayStation’s recommended network setup
PlayStation recommends a wired connection between the PS5 and router, with Portal connected over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If the PS5 also has to use Wi-Fi, PlayStation recommends connecting both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. It also suggests disabling router band steering if possible. The recommendations are summarized in PlayStation’s Portal Remote Play guide.

- PS5: Connect it to the router with Ethernet when practical. If you need to buy a cable, PlayStation’s recommendation establishes the connection type, not a required cable category, length, or brand.
- Portal: Use the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- PS5 on Wi-Fi: Put PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Router: If available, disable band steering, which can automatically move devices between Wi-Fi bands.
PlayStation recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. This is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a measured threshold or guarantee that a speed test at that rate will prevent interruptions. The same guide notes that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control.
Set Portal’s maximum streaming resolution
The resolution limit is set on Portal, not in a PS5 video-output menu. Open Portal’s quick menu and select Max Resolution. PlayStation says Remote Play quality adjusts automatically according to internet quality; the maximum choices listed in its US Portal guide are 1080p High Quality and 1080p Standard.

- 60fps Capable at 1080p Resolution - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can deliver silky smooth gameplay at up to 60fps with high image clarity on its 1080p resolution screen.***
PlayStation’s Portal system software update notes identify 1080p High Quality as an option for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Options can depend on Portal software version, so update the device and check the menu you actually have. The available guidance does not establish that lowering the maximum resolution will fix a poor connection.
What to check if Portal cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that Remote Play is enabled for the intended PS5 user and that Portal and PS5 use the same account.
- If the console is in Rest Mode, verify both network-wake settings under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- If Portal has not connected for a while, try connecting while near the PS5 before attempting a connection from outside the home; PlayStation recommends this check in its Portal connection guidance.
- If the console still is not found, connect the device and PS5 to the same network. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device, then enter the displayed number on the connecting device. PlayStation documents manual pairing in its Remote Play instructions.
PS5 settings versus Portal controls
Use the PS5 settings to enable Remote Play and make the console reachable from Rest Mode. Use the network setup to follow PlayStation’s connection recommendations, and use Portal’s quick menu to set the maximum streaming resolution. PlayStation’s cited guidance does not prescribe changing the PS5’s output resolution as a Remote Play fix.
