It only affects PS5 games that support the mode, and it does not guarantee a particular frame rate. To reduce idle activity, turn off unused options in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Display features such as VRR and 120 Hz are useful only with compatible games and screens.
Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode
On your PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, then choose the preset that matches your priority. PlayStation describes the tradeoff this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” These presets apply only to PS5 games that offer the corresponding modes; individual games may also have their own graphics settings. Check video output features your setup supports
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the console’s output and connected HDMI device information. Options such as 120 Hz output and variable refresh rate (VRR) can deliver their intended refresh behavior only when supported by the game and display. They are not universal frame-rate fixes. If enabling a feature causes unexpected behavior, turn it off; PlayStation specifically advises disabling VRR application to unsupported games if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. VRR and 120 Hz
VRR adjusts display refresh behavior for compatible game and screen combinations. 120 Hz output likewise requires a game and display that support it. Actual results vary by hardware, game, and firmware, so enable these options when your setup supports them rather than expecting them to improve every title.

ALLM
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets a compatible TV switch to a low-latency mode during gameplay. TV support and the selected HDMI input matter; consult the TV manual if the behavior is unavailable. PlayStation describes ALLM among the PS5’s features at PS5 features.
If 4K/120 Hz output is missing
- Confirm the TV or monitor supports 4K at 120 Hz.
- Connect the console to an HDMI 2.1 port; connect directly to the display where possible.
- Check the console’s resolution and transfer-rate settings.
- Use the cable included with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
A cable change is relevant only when the existing connection is unsuitable; a new cable is not a general performance upgrade. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance is included in its resolution and video-output guide.

Reduce background activity in Rest Mode
Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and disable the functions you do not use. Rest Mode can keep the console connected to the internet, download updates, and provide other functions such as USB power. PlayStation notes that each enabled Rest Mode feature increases power use. Turning off an option can also mean downloads, remote functions, or USB charging are unavailable while the console is idle. Details are in PlayStation Support’s power-saving guide.
Choose how automatic updates handle a suspended game
Automatic game and app downloads or installations can run in Rest Mode when internet connectivity is enabled. If you want to avoid an update installation closing a suspended game, PlayStation advises enabling Auto-Download only, then choosing whether to install after you resume. Use PlayStation Support’s automatic downloads and updates guide for the update controls. Keeping downloads enabled is a convenience, not a setting required for game performance.

Use Do Not Disturb to reduce interruptions
Do Not Disturb temporarily hides notification pop-ups, and notification settings can be adjusted by category. This changes how interruptions appear; PlayStation’s notification guidance does not identify it as a way to increase frame rate. See PlayStation Support’s PS5 notification guide.

- For smoother motion: select Performance Mode, then check the game’s own options.
- For compatible display behavior: enable VRR or 120 Hz only if both the game and display support the feature; use ALLM only with a compatible TV.
- For less idle activity: disable unused Rest Mode functions and decide whether you want automatic downloads and installations.
- For fewer pop-ups: use Do Not Disturb or adjust notification categories, knowing that this affects notifications rather than rendering.
These menu labels and available options may change with system software. PlayStation’s guidance describes feature behavior and compatibility, not a measured, universal frame-rate increase or power-saving figure.
