Start with PowerToys’ General settings: decide whether it should run at sign-in, review update behavior, resolve any shortcut conflicts, and set a backup location. Then enable only the utilities that address a recurring need. FancyZones is a useful first choice if you often arrange multiple windows; for launching, choose either PowerToys Run or Command Palette based on which interface and features suit you.
There is no Microsoft-prescribed order for configuring PowerToys. The sequence below is a practical way to get the basics right before customizing individual tools.
Review General settings first
Open PowerToys and select General in the sidebar. These controls affect whether the app is available, how it updates, and how you manage your configuration. Microsoft’s General settings documentation describes the available options.
- Choose whether PowerToys starts with Windows. Turn on Run at startup if you want enabled utilities available after signing in. Leave it off if you prefer to launch PowerToys manually.
- Review update preferences. Check the automatic-download and notification options. Microsoft says automatic downloads are enabled by default on new installations. Its documentation also describes backing up settings before automatic updates and restoring them if corruption is detected.
- Set a backup location. Use Backup & restore to choose where to save settings. Doing this before building layouts or remappings gives you a way to restore your configuration.
- Use settings search and check shortcut conflicts. Search for a control rather than hunting through every utility. If two modules claim the same shortcut, the conflict interface lets you reassign, ignore, or remove shortcuts.
- Leave administrator mode off unless needed. Enable it only for utilities that need elevated capabilities. For example, FancyZones may need PowerToys to run as administrator to snap elevated applications such as Windows Terminal or Task Manager.
Pick utilities that match your workflow
PowerToys includes separate utilities for different tasks. You do not need to enable them all. Start with the friction you encounter repeatedly, then configure the matching tool.

FancyZones: arrange windows in a repeatable layout
FancyZones lets you create custom screen zones and place windows in them. A sensible first setup is one layout that matches how you commonly work; adjust its interaction options only if the defaults do not suit you. See Microsoft’s FancyZones documentation for the controls and limitations.
- By default, drag a window while holding Shift to display zones.
- Enable Override Windows Snap if you want to use keyboard snapping.
- You can configure zones to appear across monitors. Showing them on all monitors may affect performance.
- Snapping elevated applications may require administrator mode.
PowerToys Run or Command Palette: choose a launcher
Both tools can launch apps, so compare their scope and interface rather than assuming you need both. PowerToys must be running and PowerToys Run must be enabled for its shortcut to work. Microsoft documents each launcher separately: PowerToys Run and Command Palette.

Choose the one whose search experience and available actions fit how you work. The documented feature overlap does not establish a need to enable both.
Keyboard Manager: fix a recurring key or shortcut issue
Use Keyboard Manager when a particular key or shortcut repeatedly gets in your way. It supports remapping keys and shortcuts; after changing a mapping, check that important shortcuts still behave as intended. Microsoft’s Keyboard Manager documentation notes that, starting with PowerToys 0.100, new installations open a redesigned WinUI 3 editor by default, with an option to switch between the new and legacy editors. That editor default should not be assumed for older installations.

Workspaces: reopen a recurring project setup
Workspaces can capture an arrangement of desktop applications, launch those apps, and position their windows. It is most useful when the same set of apps and layout recur. Microsoft’s Workspaces documentation describes several practical limits:
- A single-instance application may be repositioned instead of opened as a new instance.
- Apps launch first and are moved into position afterward.
- A window that looked snapped when saved is not necessarily launched using Windows snapping from a clean state.
Awake: prevent sleep for a specific task
Awake can keep the computer from sleeping during a long-running task, presentation, or download without changing Windows power-plan settings. It works only while you are signed in and does not operate on the lock screen; the normal power plan applies at other times. Treat it as a temporary task setting, not a replacement for Windows power configuration. See Microsoft’s Awake documentation.

Choose by task, activation, and limitations
If you are unsure what to enable, compare the tools by the problem they solve and how you expect to invoke them:
- Window placement: FancyZones for custom zones, usually activated by dragging a window.
- Launching and searching: PowerToys Run or Command Palette, each opened with its own shortcut.
- Keyboard friction: Keyboard Manager for a specific recurring key or shortcut problem.
- Repeatable app arrangement: Workspaces when you regularly use the same apps in a similar setup.
- Preventing sleep temporarily: Awake, with its sign-in and lock-screen limits.
Also account for operating requirements: PowerToys needs to be running for its utilities to be available, elevated apps may require administrator mode for FancyZones, and showing FancyZones across monitors may affect performance. These are reasons to configure a utility deliberately rather than switch on every feature at once.

A practical first-pass setup
- Decide whether you want PowerToys to run at sign-in.
- Review automatic update downloads and notifications, then choose a backup location.
- Resolve any shortcut conflicts that affect your existing key combinations.
- Enable FancyZones if you frequently arrange several windows, or choose a launcher if app and file search is your more common need.
- Add Keyboard Manager, Workspaces, or Awake only when you have a recurring task that matches their function.
