The available controls and defaults depend on the child’s age and region and on the macOS versions installed across the family’s devices.
Start with a separate child account
Give the child their own Apple Account and Mac user account rather than sharing yours. Apple advises using a Standard user account for a child on a shared Mac, so the child’s apps and information stay separate from the parent’s. See Apple’s guide to setting up a Mac for a child.
Family Sharing is useful if you want to manage Screen Time from a parent’s device. Apple also documents setting up Screen Time directly on the child’s Mac if you are not using Family Sharing. Choose the route that fits how your family manages devices; remote management requires Family Sharing.
Choose how to manage Screen Time
Apple’s instructions span the macOS 26 Screen Time setup flow and newer version 27 family controls. The menus and features available can differ by installed software. Apple says the newest child-safety features require all devices in a Family Sharing group to be updated to version 27 or later.
#1 Best Overall
| Setup choice | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Family Sharing | Manage the child’s Screen Time from a parent’s device. | For the newest version 27 features, Apple requires every device in the Family Sharing group to run version 27 or later. |
| Direct setup on the child’s Mac | Configure Screen Time on that Mac without Family Sharing. | Use the controls shown in the installed macOS; the available features and menu labels can differ by version. |
Apple’s macOS 26 Screen Time guide documents the Mac setup flow. Its newer child-safety overview covers version 27 features. Check the current Settings screens on both parent and child devices rather than assuming every control appears in every version.
Protect Screen Time and decide what to limit
Set a Screen Time passcode and review activity
Set a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know, so they cannot change the restrictions themselves. In Screen Time, consider enabling App & Website Activity if you want to review how the Mac is being used. Apple includes passcode setup in its child Screen Time setup instructions.

Set schedules, app limits, and exceptions
Review Downtime or schedules, App Limits or time allowances, and Always Allowed apps and contacts. These settings govern when apps are available, how long they can be used, and what remains accessible during restricted periods. Set them around the child’s actual routine; for example, decide whether school-related apps or important contacts need to remain available.
Review web, media, and privacy restrictions
Open Screen Time’s Content & Privacy Restrictions and review the controls for web content, age-appropriate media and books, downloads, and built-in Mac features. Apple’s Screen Time setup guide and Mac content and feature restrictions guide describe the available options.

- Web content: Choose the level of website access appropriate for the child. Where available, consider Ask to Browse to review requests to visit new Safari websites.
- Media and downloads: Check age-based restrictions for Apple media, books, and other content. Settings may differ by content type and software version.
- Built-in features: Review controls for features such as AirDrop and Camera, along with options that prevent changes to settings. Restrict only what is appropriate; disabling every feature is not automatically necessary.
Require approval for purchases and downloads
If you want to approve eligible purchases or downloads, review Ask to Buy. Apple’s Mac path is Apple menu > System Settings > Family > child’s name > Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy > Require Purchase Approval. Eligible requests can be approved or declined, but Apple notes that exceptions apply, including updates and redownloads. See Apple’s Ask to Buy instructions, published September 14, 2026.
Review communication settings separately
Communication Limits and Communication Safety are distinct controls. Review Communication Limits to decide who the child can communicate with under the available Screen Time settings. Communication Safety is designed to blur detected sensitive images or videos before a child views or sends them and to provide ways to get help. Apple says feature availability and defaults can depend on age, region, and software version; consult its child-safety overview and the settings on the child’s device.

Check age- and region-dependent defaults
Some protections may be enabled by default based on age and region, but do not assume a particular Mac has a specific setting turned on. For example, Apple’s Mac Screen Time guide says Communication Safety and Screen Distance are on by default for children under 13, with the age threshold varying by country or region, and that the Web Content Filter blocks adult content. The actual defaults and availability depend on the child’s circumstances and installed software, so verify each setting on the device.
