For a better privacy baseline in Opera, turn on tracker blocking, consider ad blocking, review third-party cookie and clear-on-exit options, and keep camera and location permissions set to ask before access. Use private windows for clearing specified local browsing data—not for anonymity—and treat Opera’s browser VPN as an IP-routing tool, not a way to stop cookie-based tracking.
Opera’s menus and feature availability vary by version and platform. The paths below reflect Opera’s current desktop help pages; if a label is missing, search Settings for the feature name.
Start with tracker blocking and ad blocking
Block trackers
Enable Block trackers to reduce common tracking methods, including analytics scripts and tracking pixels. Opera documents the control under Settings > Basic > Privacy protection, though the exact route can differ by version. See Opera’s features documentation.
Consider blocking ads
Block ads is a separate control. Opera says its ad blocker can also block sources of many tracking cookies. You can configure filter lists and create site exceptions; an exception is useful if a page breaks or needs the feature turned off to work properly. Opera describes these controls in its features documentation and security and privacy guidance.

Choose cookie and site-data settings for your needs
Opera’s desktop default accepts all cookies. In Settings, review whether to block third-party cookies and whether to clear cookies and site data when quitting. Opera’s Web preferences page documents these options under Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings; navigation labels may vary in your version.
| Choice | Privacy effect | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Block third-party cookies | Can reduce some cross-site data sharing. | May interfere with embedded content or sign-in flows. |
| Clear cookies and site data when quitting | Removes stored site data when you exit. | Can sign you out and erase site preferences; use site-specific exceptions if needed. |
Keep camera and location access under your control
Review site permissions for location, camera, and other device access. Opera documents Ask before accessing as the recommended setting for camera and location. Grant access only to sites that need it, and remove old exceptions you no longer want. Opera’s Web preferences page says, “Opera will not share this information without your permission.” See Opera’s Web preferences.

Understand what Opera’s VPN does—and does not do
Opera’s browser VPN routes browser traffic through a VPN server, encrypting the connection between the browser and that server and changing the apparent IP address and location seen by websites. It does not stop a site from recognizing you through cookies or other site data, so it is not a complete anti-tracking measure. Opera also documents a bypass for default search engines; its desktop features page says that bypass is not supported in Private Mode. Check the explanation in Opera’s security and privacy and features pages.
Use private windows for local cleanup, not invisibility
Opera says private browsing removes the session’s browsing history, cache, and cookies after all private windows are closed. It does not promise anonymity or removal of every kind of saved information: intentionally saved items such as downloads or passwords may remain. For ordinary windows, you can also use clear browsing data controls or configure clearing on exit. Opera explains the scope in its Security and privacy documentation.

Opera checks pages against databases of known phishing and malware sites and can warn when it identifies a suspicious page. Those checks cannot identify every dangerous site. Before entering sensitive information, verify the address and secure-connection indicator; do not casually bypass a browser warning. Read Opera’s security and privacy guidance.

Opera’s desktop documentation uses more than one menu route: tracker blocking appears under Settings > Basic > Privacy protection, while cookie and permission controls are described under Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings. Other versions may label or organize these sections differently. Use Settings search when the documented path does not match your browser.

Do not assume mobile controls behave like desktop controls. Opera’s separate iOS settings guide covers ad blocking, VPN, and cookie-dialog controls. On iOS, Opera says enabling cookie-dialog blocking automatically accepts cookie prompts, which means agreeing to cookies being set. Check the guidance for your specific edition before enabling that option.
