For a Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite, choose a reputable UHS-I microSDXC card sized for the games you want installed at once. The Nintendo-licensed SanDisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch is a straightforward default; a 1TB SanDisk Extreme suits a particularly large library, while Amazon Basics is a budget category to compare rather than a guaranteed cheapest choice. A card can hold downloads, DLC, updates, and captures, but it does not make a slow internet connection download games faster.
Switch 2 warning: playable games on Switch 2 require a microSD Express card. An ordinary microSD card from an older Switch can be used on Switch 2 to view older screenshots and videos, but not to store or play digital games. The original Switch-family recommendations below are not Switch 2 game-storage recommendations.

Default: SanDisk microSDXC for Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo-licensed SanDisk card is the clearest supported default if you want a card marketed specifically for the original Switch family. SanDisk documents compatibility with Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite, and its licensed family includes capacities up to 1TB. The Nintendo-design line has an advertised read ceiling of 100 MB/s. Check the exact listing and capacity: designs and available sizes vary, and the model name alone does not establish that a particular listing is the capacity you want. TechRadar’s guide, last updated October 19, 2026, also chose a licensed SanDisk card as its overall original-Switch pick.
A 256GB or 512GB listing is a practical starting point for comparing the licensed option with other UHS-I cards. The right choice depends on what you keep installed and the price of the exact variant when you buy, not on a promise that one capacity will hold a fixed number of games.
For a particularly large library: SanDisk Extreme 1TB
The SanDisk Extreme 1TB microSDXC UHS-I is a high-capacity comparison choice if you want substantial space for games you prefer not to archive. TechRadar lists an advertised read rating of up to 190 MB/s for this card. That package rating is not a measured Switch transfer speed, and it does not mean the console will download a game at 190 MB/s. Downloads depend on the internet connection and other conditions; no universal card-to-download-time improvement is established here.

For a lower-cost comparison: Amazon Basics 256GB
The Amazon Basics microSDXC UHS-I 256GB variant is a budget-category option to compare against the SanDisk choices. “Budget” is not a guarantee that it is the cheapest card today: current price, seller, variant, and stock can change. Confirm all four before buying, and compare the exact capacity rather than relying on a product family name.

How much storage should I buy?
Choose capacity by considering the sizes of the games you actually intend to keep installed, how many you want ready without archiving, and the free space already available on the console. Compare 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB listings using current price per usable capacity; do not infer a guaranteed game count from the card’s label.
- 256GB: a reasonable comparison point if you download selectively or are comfortable removing and redownloading games as your library changes.
- 512GB: a middle option if you want to keep more software installed at once without paying for the largest capacity.
- 1TB: the largest option in the original-Switch shortlist for an extensive installed library or less frequent archiving.
Those are planning categories, not predictions of how many games fit. Individual software sizes differ, and downloadable updates and DLC also use space. Nintendo’s official hardware specifications list 32GB of internal storage for the original Switch and Switch Lite and 64GB for Switch OLED; a portion of system storage is not available for user downloads. These are current official specifications checked in 2026, not figures attributed to a Nintendo publication year. Original Switch-family consoles support microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards up to 2TB, but that capacity ceiling is not a recommendation to buy the largest card regardless of cost.
Does a faster card make Switch games download or load faster?
Do not buy an original-Switch card on the assumption that its peak package speed will shorten game downloads. Nintendo recommends UHS-I for the original Switch and gives an approximate read-speed range of 60–95 MB/s; a UHS-II card cannot operate at UHS-II speed in that console. The speed printed on a card is not a measured game-download rate or a guarantee of shorter game loading.

Nor does the available evidence establish a universal loading-time advantage for a particular model in every game. For the original Switch family, a compatible UHS-I card with suitable capacity is the more useful selection rule than chasing a larger peak-speed number. Nintendo’s microSD card guidance covers its recommendations for the original system.

For Express cards, distinguish the card’s rated maximum from the result in a console. Lexar’s PLAY PRO setup sheet, identified as 202411, rates maximum read at 900 MB/s and maximum write at 600 MB/s, and says those maximum speeds are reached only with a microSD Express host device. Samsung’s 2025 datasheet for the 256GB MB-MZ256S rates read at 800 MB/s in Express mode and 90 MB/s in UHS-I mode; Samsung identifies these as internal-test ratings. SanDisk advertises up to 880 MB/s read and 650 MB/s write for its Switch 2 Express card. These are not download-speed guarantees.
For separate published context, TechRadar’s 2026 guide reports benchmarked Lexar PLAY PRO read of 831.97 MB/s and write of 310.03 MB/s. Those are the guide’s benchmark figures, not a test conducted for this article, and they do not establish a reader’s Switch 2 internet-download speed. Lexar’s PLAY PRO setup sheet explains the Express-host condition on its maximum-speed claim.
Which card does Switch 2 need?
Switch 2 accepts only microSD Express for expanded playable-game storage. Nintendo’s official compatibility guidance states: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” It supports Express cards up to 2TB, and first use requires an internet-connected system update.
An ordinary microSD card is not a lower-speed alternative for storing playable Switch 2 games. Nintendo says a standard card from an older Switch can be used to view older screenshots and videos on Switch 2, but not to load or save digital games. Treat the original-Switch shortlist and this Express branch as separate purchases for different storage needs.

Switch 2 Express options
- Lexar PLAY PRO: documented in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities. Its manufacturer ratings are conditional on an Express host, as noted above.
- Samsung MB-MZ256S: a documented 256GB microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2. Samsung’s 2025 datasheet distinguishes Express-mode and UHS-I-mode read ratings rather than presenting one speed as universal.
- SanDisk microSD Express for Nintendo Switch 2: a Nintendo-licensed Express product with vendor-advertised maximum read and write figures listed above.
Express cards can also be inserted into an older Switch, but that console uses them at ordinary microSD speeds, not Express speeds. Buying an Express card for an older console therefore does not unlock the card’s Express performance there. If you own both console generations, choose based on which console needs game-storage capacity; do not assume a card’s format or rating makes it interchangeable for playable games on both.
How do I install a card in an original Switch?
Check that the card is compatible and that its capacity matches your plan before inserting it. Nintendo says a microSDXC card may require an internet-connected system update on an original Switch. Power the console off before removing a card; if you insert a card while the system is on, Nintendo instructs you to restart the console.
- Power off the console. Do not remove a card while the system is running.
- Locate the slot. On Switch and Switch OLED, it is beneath the rear stand. On Switch Lite, it is beneath the bottom cover.
- Insert the card into the slot. Follow the console’s card orientation and do not force it.
- Start the console and follow any update prompt. A microSDXC card may require an internet-connected system update before use.
- Confirm the card is recognized. Check the system’s storage information before beginning a large download, so you know the console is directing data to the expected available space.
A computer card reader is not needed to install a new card in the console. It is only relevant if you are transferring files from an existing card to a larger one.

Replacing a full card and moving a card to another console are different situations. Nintendo describes copying data to a larger card using a Windows computer. It warns that copying on a Mac may not work properly, so do not assume a Mac-based copy will produce a working replacement.

Moving data to a larger card
- Use a Windows computer and a card reader to access the old card’s files.
- Copy the data from the old card to the computer, then copy it to the larger replacement card, following Nintendo’s instructions.
- Insert the replacement card into the same console and check that the system recognizes it and the expected downloaded software is present.
The card reader is an optional tool for this transfer, not part of ordinary card installation. Avoid treating an unsuccessful Mac copy as proof that the new card itself is defective; Nintendo specifically cautions that this copying method may not work properly.
Using a card with a different original Switch
Do not assume that moving a card between two original Switch-family consoles preserves its installed games as usable software. Nintendo says data downloaded on the old console must be erased before using that card on another original Switch. Plan a console change as a migration, not as a simple card swap that carries the old installation unchanged.
What should I check before buying?
Before checkout, verify that the model, card type, and capacity match the console and the intended use. This matters especially when listings use similar product-family names for different capacities or card formats.
Recommended Free Tools
- For Switch, OLED, or Lite: select microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC within the supported capacity range; UHS-I is Nintendo’s recommendation.
- For Switch 2 game storage: the product must specifically be microSD Express. Ordinary microSDXC is not suitable for storing playable Switch 2 games.
- For a multi-capacity product family: inspect the exact selected SKU and listed capacity, not just the first image or headline.
- For a budget listing: check the exact seller, variant, capacity, and current price; a category label does not establish the lowest price.
- For speed claims: check whether the number is a vendor maximum, a benchmark from a named publication, or a console-specific result. A card package rating by itself is not a Switch download benchmark.
How were these cards selected?
The original-Switch comparison prioritizes Nintendo compatibility guidance, the manufacturer’s documented compatibility and ratings, and distinct choices for a default card, a higher-capacity library, and a lower-cost comparison. The separate Switch 2 branch includes only documented microSD Express options because ordinary cards cannot store playable Switch 2 games. No live-price ranking or testing result is implied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Switch 2 need an internet connection the first time I use a microSD Express card?
Yes. Nintendo says first use of an Express card requires an internet-connected system update. If the console is offline, plan to connect it before relying on the card for expanded storage.
Can an old Switch microSD card show my screenshots on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance allows an ordinary microSD card to be used on Switch 2 to view captures made on an older Switch. That access does not make the card usable for storing or playing Switch 2 digital games.
What warranty does the Samsung MB-MZ256S card have?
Samsung lists a three-year limited warranty for the 256GB MB-MZ256S. Warranty coverage can depend on the purchased variant and region, so check the terms that apply where you buy it.
