For important accounts, turn on a passkey or FIDO2/WebAuthn security key if the service supports it. These methods are designed to bind authentication to the legitimate website or service, making a stolen response much harder for a phishing site to reuse. If neither is available, enable the strongest MFA option offered—but treat it as a fallback, not as equally protective.

The setting matters most on email, financial accounts, password managers, identity providers, administrator accounts, cloud consoles, and any account that can reset or control another one. Also check recovery and fallback options: a strong sign-in method can be undermined if an attacker can switch the account to a weaker one.

Which MFA is phishing-resistant?

Passkeys and FIDO2/WebAuthn security keys are the main choices when the goal is to resist phishing. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines phishing resistance as preventing an impostor verifier from obtaining usable authentication secrets or outputs without depending on the user to recognize the phish. It says phishing resistance requires single- or multi-factor cryptographic authentication.

WebAuthn uses verifier-name binding: the credential’s response is tied to the legitimate service’s identity rather than being a code that a user can copy to a convincing imitation site. NIST identifies WebAuthn as an example of this approach. Passkeys use public-key cryptography, and FIDO classifies them as phishing-resistant for this reason.

Passkeys

A passkey is a cryptographic credential used to sign in without manually entering a one-time code. Depending on the service and platform, it may be available through a phone or computer’s built-in authenticator and activated locally. The exact device support, credential handling, and recovery experience vary, so “passkey” does not guarantee that every account’s setup behaves identically.

FIDO2/WebAuthn security keys

A security key is a separate hardware authenticator that can connect by USB, NFC, or another compatible method. It can be a practical phishing-resistant option for accounts that support WebAuthn or FIDO2. NIST small-business guidance also describes platform authenticators and separate hardware keys as widely available FIDO options.

A key is not a universal account-recovery solution. Before relying on one, confirm the service supports it, check that it works with your devices and browser, and plan what you will do if it is lost. A backup key can reduce the risk of lockout, but it should be protected as carefully as the primary one.

Which MFA methods can still be phished?

Methods that ask you to enter a code or approve a prompt can still be useful, but they are not equivalent to passkeys or security keys. FIDO classifies SMS, email, messaging-app, and authenticator-app one-time passwords, push approvals, and recovery codes as phishable methods.

Method Phishing posture Why it matters
Passkey or FIDO2/WebAuthn security key Phishing-resistant when implemented as WebAuthn Cryptographic authentication binds the response to the legitimate verifier.
SMS, email, or messaging-app code Phishable A user can be tricked into sharing a code that an attacker relays to the real service.
Authenticator-app OTP Phishable A manually entered code can be relayed during its validity period.
Approval-only push Phishable An unexpected prompt can be approved through deception or repeated prompting.
Recovery code Phishable It is a sensitive fallback secret; a phisher may try to persuade you to disclose it.

NIST explains the key weakness of manually entered OTP and out-of-band outputs: an impostor verifier can relay the output to the real verifier. That makes the interaction vulnerable even when the code expires quickly. Expiration can limit how long a stolen code remains useful, but it does not make the method phishing-resistant.

Push approval has an additional social-engineering risk. If a service only offers push, reject prompts you did not initiate and use its strongest available anti-fatigue or verification setting. Do not treat an approval prompt by itself as proof that the sign-in is legitimate.

Are passkeys safer than authenticator apps?

For phishing resistance, yes: a passkey based on WebAuthn is designed to bind the authentication to the real service, while an authenticator-app OTP is a manually entered code that can be relayed. That distinction is more important than simply having an extra step at sign-in.

An authenticator app is still generally preferable to having no MFA when a passkey or security key is unavailable. CISA advises that any MFA is better than none, while also stating that phishing-resistant MFA is the most secure form. The practical choice is therefore not “use a passkey or leave the account unprotected”; it is “use the strongest method available, and understand what protection the fallback does not provide.”

Compatibility and recovery also matter. A passkey may be device-bound or syncable, and NIST recognizes both types of cryptographic authenticator. Which devices can use it, how it can be restored, and whether administrators can manage it depend on the platform and service. Check those details before removing any existing recovery route.

What is the best MFA for email, banking, and other critical accounts?

Use the strongest phishing-resistant method offered first on accounts that could expose sensitive information or help an attacker take over other accounts. NIST small-business guidance specifically highlights sensitive information and elevated-privilege users as situations where phishing-resistant authenticators should be offered or enforced.

  • Email: Protect it early because access to an inbox can help someone reset other accounts.
  • Financial accounts: Enable a passkey or security key when supported; otherwise turn on the strongest available MFA.
  • Password managers and identity providers: These can unlock access to many other services, so prioritize their sign-in and recovery controls.
  • Administrator accounts and cloud consoles: Strong authentication is especially important because these accounts may have elevated privileges.
  • File-sharing and other work services: CISA recommends MFA for users and services, including email, file sharing, and financial-account access.

Apply the same priority logic to creator accounts. Protect the email address and identity account that control the channel, as well as the streaming dashboard, community accounts, payment information, and stream keys. Guidance for streamers likewise recommends using each service’s strongest available MFA, with passkeys or FIDO security keys where supported.

How do I configure MFA without weakening account recovery?

Set up the stronger sign-in method first, then inspect what the service will accept if that method is unavailable. The goal is to avoid a recovery route that quietly lets someone bypass the protection you just added.

  1. Open the account’s security or sign-in settings. Look for passkeys, security keys, or WebAuthn/FIDO2 options. Exact labels and menu locations vary by service.
  2. Enroll a passkey or security key. Follow the service’s prompts and confirm that the new method appears as an active sign-in option before changing other settings.
  3. Plan a backup route. Add a backup authenticator or recovery method deliberately. If you use a second physical key, store it separately and securely; do not make an easily phished code the only route back into the account.
  4. Review every fallback. Check whether SMS, email codes, OTP, approval-only push, or recovery codes remain available as unrestricted alternatives. Remove or restrict weaker fallbacks where the service allows it and where doing so will not leave you without a viable recovery plan.
  5. Protect high-impact changes. If the service offers the control, require reauthentication before changing the password, MFA device, recovery email, or other important account settings.
  6. Check the recovery process before you need it. Confirm what happens if you lose a phone, laptop, or key, and keep any recovery material private and protected.

Avoid security questions or other knowledge-based reset questions as a substitute for a protected recovery method. NIST warns that knowledge-based authentication for password resets can leave an account vulnerable to takeover. The details of account recovery should therefore be part of the MFA decision, not an afterthought.

What should I compare before choosing a method?

Two options can both add a sign-in step but differ substantially in phishing resistance, recovery, and administration. Compare the whole account setup rather than choosing by the name of the authenticator alone.

  • Phishing resistance: Does the authenticator cryptographically bind its response to the legitimate verifier, or can a person relay a code or approve a prompt?
  • Recovery: What will you need if the phone, computer, or key is lost? Can you regain access without relying on security questions or a weak fallback?
  • Fallback exposure: Can the account still be taken over through SMS, email, OTP, or approval-only push, even after a passkey is added?
  • Compatibility: Does the service support the method for your account type, browser, and devices?
  • Portability and administration: Is the credential device-bound or syncable? Can it be managed centrally where needed, and does it depend on carrying a separate key?

For a physical product search, “FIDO2 security key” is the relevant category—not a promise that a particular model works everywhere. Confirm USB or NFC support, browser and device compatibility, the service’s WebAuthn/FIDO2 support, backup-key options, and recovery rules before buying.

Can MFA prevent every account takeover?

No. Phishing-resistant MFA reduces the risk of an attacker successfully impersonating a user at sign-in, but it does not eliminate every route to account access. NIST warns that session hijacking after authentication can have impacts similar to attacks against the authentication event itself.

That is why MFA settings should be paired with careful protection of recovery routes and high-impact account changes. If you suspect a credential theft incident also involved a compromised or malfunctioning computer, endpoint troubleshooting is a separate response; it does not replace strong authentication or service-side account controls. The available sources do not establish a current, topic-specific prevalence or effect-size statistic, so a precise percentage reduction in takeovers should not be assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a passkey on more than one device?

That depends on the platform and whether the credential is device-bound or syncable. Check the service and platform’s account-recovery guidance before changing devices or removing an older sign-in method.

Should I remove my password after setting up a passkey?

Only if the service provides that option and you understand its recovery process. Adding a passkey does not by itself establish that password sign-in or weaker fallback routes have been disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I approved a push prompt I did not start?

Treat it as a possible unauthorized sign-in: secure the account through its official security settings, review active sessions and recovery details, and change credentials if the service advises it. Do not approve further unexpected prompts.

Do I need two security keys?

A separate backup can help if the primary key is lost, but it also creates another credential to protect. Whether a service supports multiple keys and what its recovery process requires varies by account.
